Chapter 1: A Normal Morning
"Good morning, Frisk."
I smile as I'm greeted by my mother's soothing voice. "Morning, Mom." I whisper.
"Are you okay, sweetie?"
I nod, hugging my mom. She looks a lot like me, but older. She has short brown hair with bangs that partially cover her bright green eyes and tan skin. Instead of always wearing a t-shirt and a skirt, my mom wears a purple long-sleeve shirt under overalls.
Mom hugs me back and kisses my head. "Was it the kid from the lake?"
I shake my head.
"The kid from the oak tree?"
I shake my head.
"If it was the kid from the bakery, then-"
I nod slowly.
"I'm gonna pummel him!" Mom yells, storming out of the house.
I sigh and walk to the small kitchen area. I open the freezer and, standing on my toes, I reach for the pancakes my mom always keeps frozen for me.
I walk away from the kitchen and go over to the living room. I grab my stool and take it back to the freezer. Finally, after climbing onto the counter, I manage to snatch the sandwich bag full of pancakes.
I take two out of the bag and pop them in the toaster, then put the bag back in the freezer.
As my pancakes toast, I take a juice box out of the fridge.
Finally, I sit down at the small table to find that Mom already made me scrambled eggs. Hey, I'll still eat them. Before eating, I douse my pancakes in maple syrup with a grin.
"Frisk!"
I turn around. Standing at the screen door is Mom, who is gripping a boy's hand. I recognize him from the bakery down the street.
I take a bite of my pancakes, and stand up. I creak open the rusty door.
"I'm sorry to disrupt your breakfast, sweetie," Mom tells me with a small grin, "but this boy has something to tell you."
The boy from the bakery rolls his eyes. "Sorry." He mutters.
"For what, exactly?" Mom asks him.
"For calling you names."
"And?" Mom says.
"I won't do it again." He murmurs with fake regret in his voice.
Since my mouth is full of pancake, I just nod and pat his back.
"Don't touch me, you slob!" He yells, jumping back.
Mom glares at the boy. "I'll be back, Frisk. You can continue your breakfast."
I wordlessly sit back down and continue my breakfast.
After being insulted by local kids for about two years, I try to ignore what the kids have to say about me. But Mom can't accept it. Before work every day, she goes out and talks to the kids about how rude they are, but they never learn. Occasionally, she brings them back to the house and makes them apologize.
"Frisk, I'm sorry about that boy." Mom says with a sigh as she walks back inside. "I tried to talk to him out back, but he somehow got away from me." She sits down across from me and smiles.
"It's okay, Mom." I push my plate of pancakes toward her.
She takes a spoonful of eggs, then pushes the plate back across the table.
"When are we leaving for work today?" I ask.
"My boss is being nice to me and we don't have to leave until 9:45."
I smile.
"Still, you should probably go change out of your pajamas."
"Why?"
"Ms. Cobello told me that when you wear your pajamas to work, you always fall asleep."
"Is that a bad thing?"
Mom grins and ruffles my hair. "Let's go get ready to take on the day."
