I'm Sorry

Dick was now sitting on the side of the bed, legs dangling off.

Everyone had stepped back to give him some space.

He sighed gently through his nose and adjusted the dark shades he was now wearing.

Bruce wordlessly passed them to him the moment he woke up.

There was still one person in the room who didn't know who he really was and he was intent on keeping it that way.

However, he's not entirely sure that's why Bruce gave them to him.

His eyes may have regained their light but it only makes the dark circles around his eyes and the exhaustion on his face stand out more.

At least with the glasses he could cover it up and keep whatever dignity he had left in front of his two current teammates.

Gar approached the bed again, hand slightly raised.

He opened his mouth to say something but his communicator buzzed.

He awkwardly lowered his hand to his pocket and pulled it out and immediately grimaced as Cyborg proceed to shout at him.

"What the hell man? Tracker says you've been staying in one place for a while now and you didn't bother to call? And is Raven with you? She left after you did and her communicator is here! Cinderblock got out and Star and I were alone with him!"

Robin raised his head at that and gave Gar a slight tilt of his head, his eyebrows arching in a concerned and questioning manner.

He raised his hand up towards him and Gar, immediately knowing what he meant, passed him the communicator.

"BB? What gives-- oh hey Rob."

A few seconds of silence pass until Cyborg shouts his name in surprise.

No one else in the room can see what's going on but Robin awkwardly started rubbing the back of his head while the voices on the other end stopped and multiple scuffling noises and some static was heard on the other end.

Wally finally made his way over to the bed.

They both whispered to each other before Wally looked down at the screen.

He had an amused look on his face and quickly waved at the screen before turning around and dragging his uncle out the door and back downstairs.

"I'll talk to you later, okay Star?"

There were a few sniffles on the other side before Robin smiled slightly and apparently the communicator was shifted to Cyborg again.

"If you guys need any help then contact the others, Bumblebee and Blue Beetle."

"Dude, what exactly happened? Are you okay?"

"Oh you're asking him that now?"

Raven elbowed Gar in the gut, making him shut up.

"...Raven figured out how to heal me."

"And?!"

"We think it worked... just... I'm going to be out of commission for a few days okay? I'm probably not going to be able to make the trip back, especially on the back of a speedster."

"Why?"

Raven suddenly raised her voice.

"His recovery is not going to be easy and it's not going to happen over night. If I was just a few seconds late, he would have died and been beyond saving!"

"What about--"

"If I teleport him back it could reverse what I've done. Besides that if he does anything strenuous then he risks his recovery as well."

Robin seemed to be getting more annoyed with every word.

"...oh. Then don't do anything stupid Rob."

Duh.

He smiled again and handed the communicator back to Gar. He quickly hung up.

Now the room was filled with awkward silence once again.

If only it wasn't for Bruce...

He's suddenly and once again thankful for the glasses.

Gar shifts awkwardly in his place before Raven suddenly starts dragging him out of the room, mumbling about something.

She slammed the door behind her and left the estranged father and son finally alone.

Bruce was still against the wall, so quiet that if you didn't know he was already in the room then you would never know he actually was.

Robin set his face into a neutral expression and slowly took off his glasses.

He folded them and set them beside him on the bed.

Only then did he look over at Bruce.

He was staring hard at Dick, his expression mutual as well and his arms were crossed.

I can't tell if he's angry or something else...

"You shouldn't have left."

Dick's eyes turned into a hard glare but Bruce didn't step down.

He came towards the bed and took a seat.

"Not without saying anything. Do you know how that affected Alfred?"

Dammit... didn't think that far into it...

"And you left Gotham without a Robin."

That made Dick's blood boil.

"Oh, so that's why you needed a new kid?! To just get yourself another Robin?!"

He quickly got up in a rage but immediately regretted it as his head swam and he saw stars.

Bruce was at his side in an instant, helping him sit back down carefully.

Both of his hands were supporting his shoulders and Dick was panting, eyes trained on the floor.

"He was out on the streets Dick. He was trying to hijack the wheels on the Batmobile for money." whispered Bruce.

If Dick wasn't out of breath, despite his inner turmoil, he would've laughed at the picture that gave him.

"And you know damn well why I didn't put him in that orphanage."

Bruce then sat beside him on the bed, one hand still on his shoulder.

Dick slightly nodded.

Yeah... I get that.

"But why did you give him my name?"

His voice was little above a whisper now, due to exhaustion.

"You know that--"

His voice broke and he slumped against his former mentor, dignity be dammed, which in turn made Bruce wrap his arm around his oldest.

"...my mother gave me that name."

Bruce's grip on him tightened gently.

"I know. I know... it was not my right. But Dick... you shouldn't blame him for what I've done."

Sparrow would've been a good name. But... he does have a point.

"Dick... I'm sorry."

Dick's breathing hitched and he couldn't muster more than a murmur.

"I'm sorry Dick. I shouldn't have--"

"It wasn't just you Bruce..."

He shifts his head and sighs a little.

"But it doesn't matter anymore... and I know. And it's okay..."

Another round of silence passed over the room. But it was a comfortable silence this time and it was a few minutes before Bruce spoke again.

"Dick... I think you need to meet Jason. Properly this time."

Alright...

He was too tired to say anything out loud.

"But..."

Now what?

"He's currently on a mission with the Team... the Zeta tubes shouldn't agitate your body and we'll have J'onn look you over as well, just as another precaution."

Dick stiffened before relaxing against Bruce once again.

Fine, whatever. It's been two years anyways. And if I say no Wally will keep biting my ear off about it.

"Fine..."

Then he fell asleep against his former mentor.

The most relaxed sleep he's had in two years.

Good, yes?

...........

Okay so, finals are coming up and frankly, they're more stressful than high school ones because my scholarship could now possibly be on the line.

So with that said, I may be on a short break until December 17th, maybe a little longer or maybe even shorter.

Goodnight!
