Part One: One Question, One Discovery
It was a clear sunny day in the Demon Slayer Corps, where birds flew in the sky freely while the gentle spring breeze blew through the leaves of the oak trees. What could possibly go wrong?
At the Butterfly Mansion, a golden blonde haired girl named Yūhi sat on the porch that lead to the small garden where she was concentrating on making a flower crown. She had completed a few training sessions with the headmaster of the mansion, who was also the Insect Hashira and her mentor, Shinobu Kocho.
'Wow, all of this training almost took all of my energy, but it was worth getting stronger every time!' Yūhi thought to herself, soon finishing up with the flower crown as she stared at it in her hands with the look of triumph. She carefully placed it on her head to test it out while avoiding any damage to the colorful flower hairpiece on her hair, letting out a small sigh of content as she then stared up at the sky, closing her emerald green eyes as she breathed in the fresh air.
However, as she enjoyed her time alone, her mind then began to drift away into many thoughts that lead her into her own dreamland. For some reason, she has been unable to find any courage to make any newer friends throughout her journey of becoming a demon slayer, minus how she'd easily became good buddies with the other butterfly girls who were part of the mansion. Though, it didn't seem to matter in her mind's perspective. There was just this one person who she'd taken an interest.
Yes, it happened to be a certain who uses the Breath of Flower like a few of their companions. Who is it, you ask?
It's Ren Hanabusa.
Yes, Yūhi managed to find herself being infatuated by her comrade/training buddy. Sure, they've seen each other a few times whether it'll be paired up for missions or when Shinobu pairs them up for training alongside Kanao. Still, they haven't shared any words, nor did they plan on greeting each other or exchanging their names.
Thanks to her highly sense of sight, Yūhi managed to pick up the slightest signs of anxiety due to her observing Ren's body language. She tried reaching out to Aoi for any concerns since the blue-eyed girl knows about his problems with communicating, but she was kind enough to teach the golden blonde girl some basic tricks of sign language.
However, as time passed by, Yūhi has been practicing with Aoi in order for her to greet herself and try to befriend Ren, but the only thing that was holding her back was her sudden change of her bright attitude, which she'd immediately found out that she was growing a bit anxious. She wasn't supposed to be this nervous—despite how easy it was for her to make friends—and she hasn't found any signs of encouragement whether or not she could try-
"Hey, Yūhi-Chan!" A bright and cheerful voice called out that it made Yūhi snap herself from her dreamland out of slight fear. She was about to tell the person off for scaring the daylights out of her, but immediately stopped herself upon seeing a couple of familiar faces.
Walking up to her was a tall girl with long charcoal black hair that reached her thighs, pomegranate-pink colored eyes, and fair skin with a tiny hint of a rosy red complexion. She wore a standard female uniform with the color being a reddish pink, and a butterfly patterned haori that is green fading into different colors pink. She also has her hair fastened with two identical baby-pink colored butterfly ornaments on both sides of her head. Her name is Kanrohana Shukuharu.
Following behind Kanrohana, there was a shorter girl with light tan skin, plum purple eyes with white diamond shaped pupils, and short fluffy jet-black hair that reaches the nape of her neck. She also wears a standard female uniform with a pair of white socks with purple laces, a plain black haori with a pattern of white spider webs scattered from the sleeves to the hem of her jacket. She also has a butterfly ornament fastened to the back of her head, but it had a very light purple color. Her name is Kumosu Dokuhime.
"Oh, it's just you guys." Yūhi spoke, letting out a breath of relief as she placed a hand over her chest to relax her beating heart. She then took off the flower crown and tucked it safely in the sleeve of her fuschia colored haori. "I was just this close to breaking someone's nose." She joked playfully, earning a small giggle from the shorter girl.
"Yeah, it was my fault- but sorry, though!" Kumosu apologized, rubbing the back of her neck with a slight sheepish smile. "By the way, we were just looking for you! Nee-San wanted us to let you know that she's coming back from her mission with Kanao real soon, so we'll be having a bit of free time before she returns!" She added on, holding a finger up to emphasize her words as she remembered what Shinobu had told her without hesitation.
Yūhi looked up at the sky to find the sun slowly setting, resulting that it'll only be just some hours before the evening. Looks like she hasn't really keeping track of the time since her dreamland has taken so much of her break from training.
Catching Yūhi not saying anything after Kumosu's words, Kanrohana had a slight look of concern as she tilted her head. "Yūhi? You seem a bit more quiet than your usual cheerful demeanor." She spoke out softly, her pomegranate-pink orbs staring at the golden blonde girl as she observed carefully. "Is something on your mind?" She then asked, going to sit down on the porch with her eyes never leaving Yūhi's figure.
'Crap. I almost forgot some of use have very good eyes.' Yūhi thought, resisting the urge to give herself a slap on the wrist for not realizing Kanrohana's enhanced eyesight. Letting out a small sigh of a hidden conflict, she looked down at the ground as she kept her hand placed on her chest, her eyes staring at the different colored flowers. "Recently, I've been feeling quite stirred up about something." Yūhi explained, her voice soft and steady. "I can't describe what it is, but I feel like my stomach has this fluttery feeling, but in somehow a good thing...I guess." She added, the gentle breeze blowing against her golden blonde hair.
Kanrohana listened carefully, her eyes still holding the look of concern as Yūhi explained her situation. Kumosu, however, suddenly caught a strange scent with her keen nose. This scent in the girl's aura...was easy enough for Kumosu to figure it out herself, despite her young age. From embarrassment...to a new emotion of......love. After coming up with the solution to this scent, a small yet mischievous grin crept onto her face as she folded her hands behind her back. "Say, Yūhi-Chan...I think I know what the problem is." She suddenly spoke up, catching both Yūhi and Kanrohana's attentions.
"Really, what is it?!" Yūhi asked, lightly bouncing on her feet as she balled her hands into fists to show her eagerness for the answer. However, this was something she wasn't expecting when.........
"Do you like anybody?"
Yūhi froze in her place, her bright smile wavering just a tiny bit as she stared at Kumosu with slight wide eyes. "...Eh?" Was the only noise she let out, showing that she was beyond confused about what her friend had just asked.
Standing up, Kanrohana then walked off to stand next to Kumosu, a nervous smile appearing on her face. "What she means to ask is...do you perhaps like anybody, at all? Like Ren, for example?" She repeated, though she gave a slight emphasis by mentioning Ren's name.
Yūhi took the time to herself to process that question, blinking a few times before suddenly realizing what they meant. Her mind's eye immediately flashed a brief image of the boy with red-violet eyes and dark reddish hair that faded into a pink hue. She can easily remember the times where he'd occasionally gave her a small smile as if he was encouraging her during their training sessions.
After the brief image in her mind's eye, a very bright shade of pink tainted across her nose to her freckled cheeks, beads of sweat forming onto the girl's face. "W-WAIT JUST A M-MINUTE!!!!" Yūhi exclaimed frantically, waving her hands around as she immediately grew extremely flustered after figuring it out for herself. "I-It's not what it looks like! W-What gave you that idea!? I may or may not have liked him, but it's n-not like that, I swear!!" She quickly said, panicking as she briefly looked around to see if anybody was nearby, though she was embarrassed that her secret crush had just gotten exposed.
Kumosu watched Yūhi's slight panicking, her eyes widened to show how extremely surprised she was from her friend's outburst. "I knew it.." She began to say in a low voice, though her demeanor immediately changed when she began bouncing up and down from the discovery. "I KNEW IT!!!! My nose hasn't lied to me, after all!!" She squealed, her plum purple eyes sparkling with joy.
"Wait a minute...you knew!? How?!?" Yūhi asked, grabbing Kumosu by the shoulders and began shaking the poor girl, her face becoming more redder than a ripe tomato. 'How was Kumosu the part of this!? I haven't even seen her around!!' Yūhi thought to herself, then letting out of the young girl so she wouldn't make her dizzy.
"What did you expect?! You know I have a keen nose, and I've been smelling this scent for a while, meaning that you're SOOO totally into him!" Kumosu explained with a wide grin, pointing at her nose to emphasize that she was catching on the way Yūhi acted around Ren.
Kanrohana only smiled nervously from the dynamic in front of her, a bead of sweat forming on her face before walking up to the flustered blonde haired girl and placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "You know...you could've said something before." She said, trying to cheer her friend up with a small smile.
Letting out a defeated sigh, Yūhi sat down on the porch and buried her red face in her hands, slowly cooling off from the sudden encounter. "It's not like I'd became friends with him or anything. Sure, we did see each other a few times, but we've barely talked...and we haven't even exchanged any greetings!" She pointed out with her words coming out as muffles from her hands, though her friends can easily understand where she was coming from.
Kumosu tapped her chin with her index finger as she began to think, occasionally lifting herself up with her feet and lowering herself back to the ground. She did this gesture a few times before she let out a small gasp. "Oooooh, I know exactly what you need to do~!" She said, a mischievous grin returning back to her face as she walked closer to the golden blonde haired girl.
Perking up in panic, Yūhi then stood up and slowly backed away. "No......no! Don't tell me what I think what you're doing!" She said with a feared tone, her freckled cheeks now covered with a red blush. Without giving her time to react, Kumosu quickly went behind her friend and began nudging her to the back of the Butterfly Mansion. "You, my friend, must go talk to Ren and become friends!" Kumosu announced, 'gentle' nudging Yūhi who was trying to get away from her grasp.
"Please, be careful! Don't get into trouble!" Kanrohana called out to them as she watched with anxious eyes. Once they were out of sight, she began walking inside the mansion to lay down for a bit, knowing that her last mission had took a lot of energy.
"Good luck to you, Yūhi-Chan..."

Part Two: Awkward Encounter
Meanwhile, at the back of the Butterfly Mansion, a young boy was found outside hanging up some bedsheets on a clothesline after they were washed. He had red-violet eyes, brown skin, and dark reddish brown hair that faded into a pink color. His name is Ren Hanabusa.
He was wearing a standard male uniform with the color being a very dark maroon red. Over his uniform, he seemed to be wearing a white nursery apron with a pinkish-maroon red sash wrapped securely around his waist. Ren has been doing some chores around the Butterfly Mansion since he had completed his usual training session with Shinobu and Kanao a few hours ago. He was just about done with hanging up the bedsheets on the clothesline to let them dry in the warm sun, letting out a relief sigh as he smiled softly at his success so far, until......
"Hey, Ren." A stern yet calm voice called out to him, which caused the boy to look over and saw who was here outside. It was none other than Aoi Kanzaki, one of the helpers of the mansion. She placed down a wooden basket and began making hand gestures as if she was using sign language, since she's the only one who knows how to communicate with him.
'Once you're done, I need you to come back inside in five minutes. Lady Kocho wants us to cook dinner before she returns from her mission with Kanao.' She signed to him, waiting patiently for him to respond as she went to pick back up the basket.
Ren then nodded his head with a small smile, lifting his hands up and began signing back to Aoi after she told him what he needed to do.
'Okay, thank you for letting me know, Aoi.'
With a appreciative nod, Aoi gave him a small smile in return before walking back into the mansion with the basket in her hands, knowing that she'd be doing a few more loads of laundry before the two of them would have to cook dinner together before the Insect Hashira returns back home with her Tsuguko.
As Ren started hanging up the last bedsheet on the clothesline, he was unaware of the situation he was about to be put in, because....
"N-No, Kumosu! You can't make me!" Yūhi squeaked, continuing with trying to break herself free from Kumosu pushing her from behind as they found themselves turning the corner to the back of the Butterfly Mansion.
"Oh, come on! What's the worst that can happen?!" Kumosu asked with a carefree smile, having a tight grip on both Yūhi's shoulders as she continued on with 'gently' nudging her friend. Once they reached their destination, Kumosu's nose caught the scent of peaches and cherry blossoms, almost figuring out that Ren was somewhere nearby. She looked around for a brief moment until her plum purple eyes immediately spotted his figure just a few feet away from them.
"Besides, he's right there! Just say a few words and then you're done!" Kumosu added on, closing her eyes out of glee as she kept on ignoring Yūhi's constant protests. Once they were a bit close enough, Kumosu cleared her throat to hide her sheer excitement. "Hey, Ren! You have a visitor~!" She called out, now having the audacity to push the flustered girl towards the boy.
Ren jumped a little from hearing the familiar outgoing tone in Kumosu's voice as he quickly looked over, though before he can greet the shorter jet-black haired girl, his quick reflexes kicked in out of panic when Yūhi was pushed towards him, causing him to instinctively placed his hands on her waist to keep her from tripping over her feet. He wasn't expecting this kind of encounter, but he couldn't help but feel his face heat up slightly from how dangerously close she was to him.
Yūhi, however, was this close to passing out from how extremely red her face looked. She was about to brace herself from meeting the grassy ground when Kumosu pushed her towards Ren. Instead, she found herself being held in a quick embrace as Ren had prevented her from tripping. She blinked a few times to process what just happened, but after a few moments to recover, she quickly pulled herself away from him and had a very embarrassed grin. "H-Hey, sorry about that! Kumosu got a little too excited, hehe.." She apologized, bringing a hand up to rub the back of her neck while giving Kumosu a quick side-eye that almost looked like a glare.
Kumosu only had a smug grin on her face as she ignored Yūhi's glare, placing her hands on her hips as she felt incredibly triumphant that her plan was working. "Welp, I'll be on my way to train for a bit. See you guys later!" She said with a quick wave as she bid her farewell while running off to the training grounds, leaving the two alone.
Yūhi and Ren watched Kumosu run off, the both of them were still standing there as they slowly recovered from the awkward encounter. None of them said a word, but due to both of their anxiety and slightly uncomfortable body languages, they can easily tell that this didn't really have a good start after what happened.
Yūhi awkwardly cleared her throat as the blush on her face began to slowly cool off, reaching behind to grab hold of her hair and fidget with the ends of the golden blonde locks. "So..." She began to speak, soon gaining Ren's attention as he turned to look at her with a rather nervous expression, though his eyes held a look of interest otherwise. "I guess we haven't really...introduced each other, right?" She continued on with a small friendly smile.
Ren stared at the golden blonde haired girl for a brief moment, a small bead of sweat formed on the side of his face as he couldn't seem to find any words to say towards her. While looking down at the grass, he only shook his head as if he was giving a response that they haven't introduced themselves, though they have been indeed training partners for a while.
Yūhi felt her smile waver slightly as she began observing him, noting how incredibly quiet he seemed to be while silently studying his body language. She then looked down at her hands, soon remembering something before stepping in front of Ren, who looked back at her in slight confusion. She hesitated for a bit before she did the most unthinkable...
'Back there, I really do...apologize for startling you. It wasn't my intention, but Kumosu was too excited for me to try and befriend you. I swear, I would never jeopardize your personal space.'
Seeing her slowly do sign language had immediately caught Ren off guard, his red-violet eyes widened from shock and awe as he watched closely. Knowing that Aoi wasn't no longer the only one, Ren began to grow comfortable as he lifted his hands up to communicate with Yūhi.
'I forgive you, and you......can understand sign language?'
Seeing Ren also using his sign skills to communicate, Yūhi can feel herself smiling happily as her heartbeat increased slightly from the moment where she had instantly forgotten about her sheer anxiety and finally being able to make a new friend, despite things being extremely awkward from earlier.
'Aoi has been helping me out recently, so yeah I've been learning more of it for a while!'
Ren can also feel himself smiling, though he began to wonder if he was actually comfortable enough to use his voice to speak directly at her. After a brief moment of silence, brought a hand up to the back of his neck and rubbed it nervously. "Ren." Was all he'd ever said, which caught the girl off guard.
Yūhi blinked as she took the process to hear what she thought she just heard. "W...What did you say?" She asked softly yet again full of hope as she looked at him with slight wide eyes.
"M-My name..." Ren trailed off, feeling himself growing a bit nervous about having to actually talk verbally. "...is Ren Hanabusa." He continued, now having the courage to introduce his full name while trying his absolute hardest of not making a fool out of himself.
Hearing a small giggle from the girl, Ren tilted his head from confusion as he didn't have any idea why she laughed, but relaxed with a small smile as she began introducing herself.
"I'm Yūhi Megumi...nice to meet you, Ren..!"

Final Part: New Friend, New Love
By the time the sun was beginning to set, Yūhi and Ren found themselves sitting on the porch of the Butterfly Mansion near the flower garden while they continued on their communication through the help of their sign languages.
Whenever she would occasionally steal secret glances at the boy, she can already tell that her crush on him was becoming stronger without realizing it, though she'll be thanking Kumosu later for giving her a push of encouragement.
After what felt like forever of getting to know one another, the two began staring at the sunset as the sky above shone its various colors of orange, pink, and purple. It was all too perfect for this moment to come together, but not before Yūhi had suddenly perked up when she remembered the flower crown she made from earlier today as she quickly tapped Ren on the shoulder to get his attention.
'Oh yeah, I wanted to give you something!'
Yūhi signed quickly before reaching for the sleeve of her fuchsia colored haori in search for the flower crown. Ren watched with intrigue, wondering what she could possibly wanted to give him, though when she carefully pulled out the specially made flower crown, his eyes shone in awe as he stared at this floral accessory in her hands. Yūhi only smiled at his reaction to the flower crown before carefully placed it on his head, taking him by surprise.
"I made this earlier, so it's still fresh! Besides, this is my way of showing our new friendship!" Yūhi explained, now feeling her freckled cheeks heating up slightly as she couldn't help but think that he looked really cute with his new flower crown.
Ren kept the crown on for a few moments before carefully taking it off to take a very much closer look. The flower crown had a pattern of daisies, tulips, and roses with a hint of sunflower petals perfectly tucked in the stems of the flowers to keep everything in place. What did caught his attention were the petals of cherry blossoms and a single fully-bloomed orchid in the center of the flower crown.
"Wow...it looks really pretty." Ren complimented, smiling giddy at Yūhi's gesture of giving him this accessory as the way of forming a newfound friendship. He placed it back on his head, already loving how it perfectly fitted without messing up his wavy dark reddish-brown hair. "Thank you, Yūhi." He thanked the girl with a soft smile.
"You're welcome, Ren." Yūhi said, her heart basically melting from how his voice sounded; it was very heavenly for her ears to listen. Taking a brief look at the sky to see that it was very close to be the evening, the golden blonde haired girl immediately stood up, which almost scared the daylights out of Ren. "O-Oh man! I almost forgot to do my meditation session! I need to catch up on that!" She squeaked out, placing a hand on her head as if she's this close to give herself a brief facepalm, but kept her cool.
She then looked over at Ren and saw him placing a hand over his chest as if he was trying to recover from the slight scare, which caused her to bow multiple times. "Eek! S-Sorry for scaring you!" She apologized, continuing to bow. Ren held a hand up for a moment as if he was telling her to stop bowing, which worked. "P-Please, no need to apologize!" Ren quickly dismissed with a nervous grin.
After that brief scare and apology, Yūhi eventually calmed down and had a small smile on her face before lifting her hands up and began signing to his direction.
'I guess I'll see you later? I can make some tricolored dango to snack on after tomorrow's training session with Kocho-Sama!'
Ren thought about it for a moment before smiling at the idea and began signing back to Yūhi with his hands. It almost has been a while since he had a small break whenever he trains to improve more of his swordsmanship skills.
'I like that very much, and I'll be looking forward to training with you again.'
Once everything has been settled, a faint pink blush tinted on her freckled cheeks as Yūhi seemed a bit hesitant about something, causing Ren's smile to fade and have a slight mixed look of concern and confusion. However, Yūhi did the most unthinkable thing she's never done before as she stepped a little closer to Ren...
She quickly leaned forward and placed a quick kiss on his cheek, catching the boy off guard with his red-violet eyes widening in shock as his body almost went stiff from the gesture. Pulling away, Yūhi immediately took off running as the blush on her face darkened as she briefly turned around and waved at him. "I'll see you for tomorrow's training! Bye!" She said, bidding her farewell as she turned the corner to the entrance of the Butterfly Mansion.
Ren watched her leave as he was still in shock, slowly placing his hand on the spot where she'd kissed him as he wasn't expecting it at all. However, he'd only smiled as a faint chuckle of amusement left his mouth as he recovered from the surprised look. "Yeah...see you tomorrow." He spoke out softly with a faint smile returning to his face, then standing up from the porch and headed back inside the mansion so he can get started with cooking dinner.
Just like that, this was the story's beginning of Ren and Yūhi's newfound friendship, or perhaps they'll experience something even more than that during their journeys......
During their interactions, Yūhi and Ren never noticed that BOTH Kumosu and Aoi were watching them from behind the wall of the other side of the Butterfly Mansion. Kumosu had a very bright grin on her face, knowing that her push of encouragement had helped Yūhi break free from her anxiety and become Ren's new friend.
"THAT'S what you wanted to show me?!?" Aoi whispered harshly to the shorter girl as she had to abandon her preparations for dinner at this hour just to see Ren interacting with their friend. Though, the blue eyed girl didn't want to admit it, but she was smiling the whole time without realizing it.
"Yes! Now that Yūhi and Ren won't have any problems with their anxiety, they're more comfortable enough to actually get along more!" Kumosu whispered back in glee to the other girl, briefly bouncing on her feet in excitement. The two of them stood there for a few moments, not noticing another presence behind them, until...
"Ara ara~ What are you two doing out here so late?" Both Kumosu and Aoi tensed up in panic from hearing the familiar voice and looked over, seeing the headmaster of the Butterfly Mansion walking up to them with her usual smile; the Insect Hashira, Shinobu Kocho.
"L-Lady Kocho, you're here a bit early!" Aoi says after her brief recovery, soon bowing to the Hashira as she felt a few beads of sweat forming on her face with Kumosu doing the same thing. "When did you return to headquarters?" Aoi then asked, soon finishing with bowing as she folded her hands in front of her.
Shinobu only placed a hand over her pink colored lips as she giggled quietly from their antics, closing her eyes for a brief second before opening them up again. "Not too long ago, but since Kanao and I defeated the demon last night, I ended up sending off the crow to let the master know about it." The older woman responded while another person soon walked up to them, who was none other than Shinobu's own tsuguko and adoptive sister; Kanao Tsuyuri.
"Now then, I'll be inside if you need me." Shinobu then said, giving Kumosu's short and fluffy jet-black hair a gentle pat before walking off inside the mansion with Aoi following close behind since she still needed to prepare dinner for tonight.
Kumosu pouted playfully from the head pat before fixing it up before resuming with spying on Ren and Yūhi, but what made her grin happily was how she easily spotted Yūhi kissing Ren on his cheek before they'd bid their farewells. "Wow, I can't believe they actually became friends real quick, and this happens real quick! What do you think, Kanao?" She beamed happily before facing her older adoptive sister in glee.
Kanao, however, only stood there in silence as she watched the interaction between Ren and Yūhi. With her highly sense of eyesight, she was able to easily pick up the slightest glimpse of their smiles. What made her heart suddenly ache was how Yūhi kissed Ren's cheek before their goodbyes were shared. Upon hearing Kumosu's question, Kanao then pull out her coin and stared at it for a moment before flipping it.
Heads, reply to Kumosu.
Tails, say nothing at all.
When she caught her coin, it landed on tails. 'Impossible. I may see them as friends, but I doubt there's more than that.' Kanao thought to herself, before looking back at Kumosu and simply nodded her head to hide her newfound hidden jealousy before walking off inside the Butterfly Mansion.
Kumosu was then left by herself as she watched Kanao walk away, but her keen nose can easily sense the jealousy in her sister's aura. She frowned a little as she felt a little conflicted from the thought of Kanao and Yūhi's same crush on Ren. However, she'd only shrugged it off before also heading back inside the mansion, still happy to help out Yūhi and be the perfect matchmaker.

FINALLY!!!! Another oneshot completed! I had a lot of fun with writing this one, despite taking me three to four days!
I hope I did Ren justice in the oneshot! It has been a long time since I'd last wrote something that features him!
Have I used our artworks for reference as I wrote this? Yes, I did!
Have I been listening to Coconut Mall for motivation as I was writing?
...Yes I did, and you can't stop me! XD
Enjoy!
Signing off, @avaaviesflowergirl
