Golden Letter
I sat on the steps of the public library and watched as cars drove by. I looked into my foam cup and counted the change I had collected. I made two dollars today. I could get something off of a dollar menu now! I was so excited to finally be able to have a meal that didn't come from garbage or a charity. I liked the feeling that I could pay for something. Then a fairy wearing a mail carrier uniform walked up to me. He gave me a weird look and then looked at a golden envelope," Are you, Braylin Aaron?"
"Yeah, why?" I was nervous but also curious about why this mail fairy had mail for me.
He handed me the golden envelope," This must be for you then." Then he flew off.
I looked at the silver wax seal that had the letters HU in a fancy font pressed on it. What does HU stand for?
I opened the envelope slowly as if it was loaded. I pulled out a folded piece of paper and unfolded it to reveal a letter.
Dear Braylin Aaron,
We are here to inform you that the board of extra naturals has reviewed an anonymously sent letter informing them of your predicament. The Home for Us private organization has opened its doors for you alone. If you take this offer please proceed to the Home for Us mansion immediately.
Head director of the board for extra naturals,
Jonathan Mcseal
I wished the letter would have provided more context. What is the Home for Us? I sat staring at the black letters wishing more would appear. All I ever did anymore was wish. Maybe this private organization could make some of my wishes come true. I stood up and put the letter in my ratty drawstring bag. I started walking down the sidewalk to the nearby Burger Boot to get me a dollar burger and drink. The walk felt short in the nice fall air. I walked in and customers stared at my homelessness. It was honestly embarrassing to be stared at for being a homeless teen and not your average teen getting a combo after soccer practice. I went up to the cashier. I dumped the coins on the counter," I have just enough for a burger and a small cola."
The cashier counted the change and handed me a quarter," twenty-five cents over." Then he handed me a large cup.
"Sorry, this isn't the size."
"Sure it is!" He winked at me.
I mouthed a thank you and fill it up with a sugary orange-flavored cola. I took a small sip as I grabbed my bag off the counter. Before I left, I asked the cashier," Hey do you know where the Home for Us is at?"
"Yeah, a kid from my school got rejected from there. He was super bummed out. If I remember correctly, he told me that it was close to the Blessed Nymph forest."
I thanked him and left. I luckily knew where this forest was located.
