𝟬𝟮𝟯 What's the Worst Thing for Stefan Salvatore?
CHAPTER TWENTY THREE / ACT TWO
What's the Worst Thing for Stefan Salvatore?
Angelina stepped out of Jenna's car, alongside Jenna and Jeremy. Currently, Elena was at the hospital with John to find out if he knew anything about Katherine's reasons for staying here.
She gazed out at the front of the Lockwood Mansion, admiring it's beautiful exterior as people from all over the town walked inside for Mayor Lockwood's wake.
She, Jenna, and Jeremy all began making their way towards the mansion together, walking up a large hill that led to their estate.
"Looks like the whole town has turned out," Jenna commented as she examined the large crowd of people around the perimeter of their home.
"There's more people here than there was at the parade.." Angelina added.
"Why don't they save it for the funeral?" Jeremy groaned, and the doppelgänger rolled his eyes at his comment.
"It's what people do," The redhead replied as they made their way up the stairs. "The Lockwood's were here for us when we went though this."
"It'll be quick, we'll drop off the food and pay our respects and go."
"In and out? Sounds like a plan."
"I'm gonna go find someone," Angelina told them, referring to Stefan, and went off to go inside of the mansion, but immediately was put to a halt when a forced stopped her from going inside. She hadn't been invited in.
"What's wrong?" Jenna inquired, tilting her head to the side. The Petrova turned to at her and sighed, trying to come up with a legitimate response.
"Um- I..." She stuttered through her words, attempting to hide her worry with a laugh. "I think they'd be somewhere out here, crowded places just aren't their thing.."
Jeremy smirked and tried to disguise his laugh, while Jenna furrowed her brows. Angelina scratched the back of her neck and walked away from them, heading for the mansion's back door, where she would find one of the Lockwoods to invite her inside.
Being invited inside wasn't part of her plan, but she figured it could be a good excuse to skip the whole wake. As she wandered around the perimeter of the house, scanning for a Lockwood, a creepy sensation prickled at the back of her neck, like someone was watching her.
She spun around, expecting to catch someone spying on her, but only saw a bunch of guests chatting outside.
When she turned back, her heart leaped into her throat. Standing right in front of her, wearing that signature smirk, was Katherine Pierce.
Startled, Angelina jumped back and her eyes widened in shock, and she grabbed Katherine's arm and dragged her to the back of the house, out of sight.
"What are you even doing here?!" Angelina snapped, but once they were in the backyard and hidden from view, she released her grip.
"Just paying my respects to the Mayor, darling." Her sister's grin widened.
"You shouldn't be here," Angelina sighed, starting down the path with Katherine trailing behind. "Elena might show up any second."
"Well, that sounds like a blast! We could stroll around and play triplets! What should my tragic long lost sister backstory be?"
Angelina clenched her teeth, holding back the surge of anger as she trudged across the countryside with her twin sister by her side, who seemed to find the whole situation amusing. Despite the absence of the tomb vampires and her budding relationship with Stefan, she had hoped for some improvement in their relationship. Yet, here she was, stuck with the same person who had toyed her for months. Any hope of finding happiness vanished the moment she laid eyes on her.
"We've barely had a real conversation other than some phone calls in 145 years, and you don't have anything to say to me?" Her sister's scoff grated on her nerves, prompting Angelina to avert her gaze towards the large pond behind the estate.
"Ironic coming from you since you're the one who left me." Angelina rolled her eyes and stopped in her tracks before turning to face to her.
"You're still mad about that? C'mon, get over it already.."
"Why are you here?" Angelina frowned, her arms crossed as she cocked her head to the side and bit her lower lip. "You obviously aren't here for a family reunion, which means you're planning something. I'm assuming it has something to do with you wanting Elena alive?"
Katherine smiled and held her hands together, a look of innocence on her face. "Fine, you got me.. remember the moonstone I gave George Lockwood?"
"That shiny rock? Yeah.."
"I want it back."
"Why?"
"Because that rock is what binds the curse on Klaus."
With clenched fists and a palpable tension in the air, the atmosphere shifted ominously.
The involvement of Klaus or any other original vampire always spelled trouble, and if her sister had anything to do with them, it could only mean disaster. "What exactly are you plotting?" Her tone hardened, her previous annoyance replaced by genuine concern as the words left her lips.
"Think of it as a leverage." She replied. "I hand over Elena, a werewolf, and the moonstone, and Klaus rewards us with our freedom."
"And you really believe he won't kill you the moment he lays eyes on you?!"
"No, I don't." She exhaled and held her hands behind her back. "Which is why I plan on handing over them over to Elijah."
"Katerina, you're asking to get killed!"
"I've spent five centuries years on this earth surviving. I think I know what I'm doing. Except.. I need your help." She muttered under her breath.
"I'm not helping you with this." Angelina scoffed and began walking away from her, but was abruptly stopped when her sister grasped her forearm.
"We both know you want your freedom," her sister coaxed, her voice low and persuasive. "If this works, you'll get exactly what you want. A normal life, Elena will be dead and you'll have Stefan all to yourself. lf. I'll even vanish from Mystic Falls, poof, gone."
Angelina mulled over her sister's pitch. Sure, breaking free from Klaus was her top priority, but betting on this scheme felt like playing with fire. And if it did pan out, Elena's demise would leave a crater of grief in Mystic Falls. She couldn't stomach being the cause of that.
"Speaking of Stefan, how's your little love story going?" Her sister's smirk stretched wider, releasing her grip on Angelina's arm. "I mean, you two kissed, right?"
"How do you know about that?"
"Oh come on Ann, I'm your sister. I know practically everything about you and your struggling love life." She teased, and Angelina simply rolled her eyes without looking at her. "But one quick question.. does he even know about Klaus, Elijah.. the sacrifice?"
The doppelgänger turned around to face her, her brow furrowed in perplexity at where Katherine was taking this conversation. "..No, and if you aren't stupid you won't lead them to Mystic Falls to kill all of us."
"Oh c'mon," She scoffed and came stepped closer to her. "You aren't at least the tiniest bit worried that Klaus will come back and you'll have to run all over again? I mean, obviously Stefan won't run with you for the rest of his life. Because as long as he's with you, he's practically doomed."
"Klaus will kill him, just like he killed everyone else. I'm sure he'd be much happier with Elena considering it's obvious he's still in love with her."
"Shut up, Katherine."
"You really think that he'd ever love you over Elena? Sure, she may have kissed Damon but at least she doesn't put his life in complete danger. I mean, you look exactly like her. What makes you think you're anything more than a rebound?"
Angelina clenched her fists and glared at her sister, her rage growing with each word that came out of her mouth. It wasn't true. She couldn't bear the thought of it being true. Because if she did, their relationship with Stefan would be doomed.
"The worst thing for Stefan Salvatore Annelise," Katherine stepped an inch closer to her so she was directly in her face. "..is you."
In a sudden surge of fury, the younger twin lunged forward, lodging her hand inside her sister's chest with a vise-like grip on her heart. Katherine gasped, her eyes wide with shock, as she struggled to draw breath, pinned by her sister's fierce grasp.
"You always thought you were the brains, didn't you, Katherine?" Her sister's voice was a low growl, thick with resentment. "But strength? That's always been mine."
"You don't know a damn thing about me, or Stefan, or anything at all. The moment you walked away, you lost to right to have a say in anything in my life. I've changed since then. I'm much more angrier."
"And that anger.. will be your downfall." Katherine smirked, pantsing every few words, and had just enough strength in her body to let out a sly smirk. The brunette took her hand away from her heart, but instead of letting go, she snapped her neck and watched her boy fall limp into the grass.
"Until then, I guess I'll just be angry."
