Just a Flower

I sat on the branch, watching the kids laugh around me. The air was warming up from a cold winter, and that meant I got to do what I do best. I jumped down and was eye level with a flower bud. I smiled and touched the tip of the flower. Within moments, it was a fully bloomed rose.

"Wow, guys! Look!" a girl, about ten, ran over. "It's so beautiful!" I grinned, mentally thanking her.

"It's just a flower, Soph. Come on." her friend grabbed her arm and pulled her back to their game. I frowned, and sat up.

"Just a flower." I scoffed. "You know how hard it was to perfect that trick?" I yelled, knowing they wouldn't hear me anyways. It was kind of lonely, being April Summers. But I guess little things like making Sophie smile was worth it. I shook my head and went to bloom more flowers.

"Hello Mate." I smiled, hearing that familiar Australian accent.

"Hi Bunny." I turned around, finding myself face to face with none other than the Easter Bunny, my best friend. Scratch that, my only friend. "Is it already Easter time?"

"No, but I thought I'd make a visit to my friend."

"I'm hoping you mean me."

"Of course, mate." I smiled.

"Whoa, wait- is that..." he was looking at Sophie, curiosity spreading across his face.

"Who? Sophie?" He smiled,

"Sophie Bennett, the one and only. She's grown a bit."

"You know her? Wow, what a small world. She's my biggest fan." I smiled, watching her play.

"She's the girl who broke into my tunnels, the little cutie. Her brother helped save us."

"Jamie Bennett helped save you?" I couldn't help but laugh. "That kid, only happy if it's twenty below, I swear. It's like he hates spring." Bunny chuckled,

"I don't think he hates spring, I think he just loves winter."

"Why? It's always so cold. You have to put on ten pounds of clothing to be happy."

"Agreed. But Jack's his best friend."

"Jack Frost?" I groaned, looking up at him. Jack Frost, always stealing my season. The middle of April, and it'd be snowing. Because of him. The evil little ice demon.

"Of course, mate." I sat down in the soft grass.

"Him and Sophie are like polar opposites. Sophie loves the warm air, flowers, and summer rain. Jamie likes cold air, ice, and snow."

"Sometimes the world is like that." Bunny's ears perked up, "Aye, mate, I gotta go. I'll see you soon."

"Bye!" I said as he disappeared into his tunnel. I looked over at Sophie, now alone, who was laying in the grass, watching the clouds.

"That one looks like a bicycle." she pointed to one, talking to no one in particular. I looked up, and saw the cloud she was talking about. I saw a cloud with no particular shape, and turned it into a bunny. "That one looks like a bunny!" she laughed, looking at the one I created. She sighed and closed her eyes. I walked over and sat next to her, watching the clouds too. I made one to look like a flower and laid down. I watched them closely, changing their shape once in a while, before creating a white daisy next to Sophie. She opened her eyes, saw it and smiled. "Wow." She said under her breath, before she got up and ran inside, coming out seconds later with a camera. I smiled, wishing she could see me, and flew to the other side of town, creating spring all the way across. I landed in a tree, noting an ice pattern, and frowned. It's March. Time for spring. I touched it, melting it off, and the water dripped down. It landed on a dried flower, causing it to bloom.

"Now, what was that for?" I looked up to find none other than Jack Frost sitting on a branch across from me.

"It's March. That's what it was for." I rolled my eyes, and moved up the tree, doing the same to each ice patch I found, till I sat on the highest sturdy branch.

"Well, spring doesn't officially start for at least a week. Can't I enjoy the last week of winter?"

"Yeah. In Antarctica."

He sighed and rolled his eyes. "To be fair, you started winter three weeks early last season. Forgive me if I start spring one week early." I said sarcastically, flying to the next tree, filling it's empty branches with leaves.

"For such a happy person, you seem a bit sour."

"Maybe because you're here. I'm actually quite happy." I smiled and melted the ice off the next tree.

"Sure." he replied, following me while replacing his ice patterns.

"Aren't you supposed to be in Antarctica right now?" I asked, noticing how sour I actually did sound.

"Aw, April, do you hate me?" he gave me puppy dog eyes and a frown.

"Aw, of course not Jack." I replied sweetly. "I loath you." I turned and walked away.

"Ouch. You really do, huh?" he followed me, his staff dragging the ground, freezing it as we walked.

"Yes." I ran my hand along each tree we passed by, leaves filling each one.

"Why?" he watched his staff, turning a loose sarcastic conversation into a serious awkward conversation.

"Maybe because you're trying to turn my spring into winter." I said, gesturing to the ice trail he had made.

"Oops." he said, looking between me and the trail. "Sorry." I rolled my eyes and continued walking. "So, you hate me for pretty much the same reason Bunny hated me?"

"Yeah." I found my home tree, where the first memory I ever had took place. Except, back then, there wasn't a tree. Just a flower bed. I laid down under the shade of the leaves, closing my eyes and remembering that first day. I woke up in the middle of night, the first thing I saw was the moon. It was kind of like there was a person up there, talking to me. It told me my name was April Summers. That's it.

"Who am I?" I asked it, with no answer. I laid back down, noticing for the first time I was laying on a flower bed. I turned my head to the side, wanting to fall back into oblivion again, and saw a flower bloom. It was so beautiful, so young. I reached out to stroke it, and it opened. Just like that. I gasped. I did that. I got up, and ran around, touching each flower, and watching them bloom. I was having so much fun, but that one question remained in my mind. I saw lights, and looking closer, realized it was a town. Thinking, maybe they knew who I was, I ran over there. Seeing that the streets were almost empty, I figured it must've been pretty late. "Excuse me, where am I?" I asked an old man sitting on a bench. He ignored me, and continued reading his paper. I blinked. "Okay then." I looked around, and saw a lady walking on the sidewalk. "Excuse me, Miss, could you tell me where I am please?" I asked politely. She ignored me too. I saw some kids, and ran to them. "Please, where am I?" I asked desperately. They walked right through me. Through me. I stood there, feeling lost, confused, and broken. I walked out of the town, back to my flower bed, and sat there the rest of the night, perfecting my flower skills.

"April?" Jack's voice snapped me out of my memory sequence. "Are you ok? You've been making that flower open and close for the last five minutes." I looked at my hand and realized he was right.

"Sorry. I was just thinking about something." I looked over at him, "Why were you watching me for the past five minutes anyways? Don't you have some Guardian thing to do?" I asked, melting the ice Jack just laid down.

"No." he replaced his ice patch, and I melted it again. We sat there doing that for who knows how long, before we heard someone laugh behind us. I looked over and noticed the Tooth Fairy floating there, watching us.

"Hey Tooth." Jack acknowledged her without looking up from his ice patch.

"Hello. What are you two doing?" she asked curiously, sitting next to me.

"Thinking." I replied, and the same time Jack said nothing. She smiled.

"You guys look cute together." she said, watching the ice patch Jack was so determined to have there.

"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked, hoping she didn't mean what I thought she meant. She just smiled at me, remaining silent.

"Jack, North wants to see you." He looked at her for the first time since she got here.

"About what?"

"Not sure, he didn't say."

"Okay. What about you?"

"Just you."

"Okay." He called the winds and flew away.

"Hi April." Tooth looked at me and smiled. "How are you?"

"Good, I guess. What about you?"

"Good. I take it you like this tree?"

"Yeah, it's my first memory." She looked at me, studying my face.

"What is it with you weather people and not remembering anything?" she sighed.

"What do you mean?"

"Jack didn't remember anything either."

"Oh."

"Could you do something for me, please?" I looked up to see Tooth's hopeful grin.

"Sure, what?"

"Jack put a little ice patch at the door for my palace, so whenever anybody walks in on foot, they slip. Could you melt it for me?"

"Of course." I laughed. She smiled and took my hand, and flew through a magic portal, landing us in her palace.

"Over there." she pointed. I walked over to it and poked it, causing it to melt...and for a grass patch to grow.

"Oops." I winced. "Sorry." I poked it again, causing the grass to disappear.

"Thank you April!" she smiled, and looked over towards where I'm guessing North's home is. There were northern lights above it, something I have never seen."Oh no." she looked a little scared.

"What?" I looked at her, a bit worried by her expression.

"I have to go...but I can't leave you here alone...you're coming with me." she grabbed my arm and flew over there, a few baby fairies following.

"Tooth," North said once we were inside, "you're here, good. And...you have April with you?"

"She was at the palace when I saw the signal, I had no choice but to bring her." Tooth replied.

"No, no, that's good thing. Yetis were going to get her anyways."

"Wait, why?" I asked, kind of nervous myself.

"Pitch." Bunny said, making me realize that Sandy, Jack, and him were all behind North, looking at some statue thing in the middle of the room.

"What does that have to do with me?" I asked. Pitch was a loser, to be honest. Always trying to take over the world, always failing. Really pathetic.

"Everything. He's turning bright colorful Easter eggs into deadly weapons." North boomed, very worried.

"Has he hurt anyone yet?" I asked.

"No but-"

"Then relax." I replied, realizing that I use that word a lot. "Get worked up when he has."

"What's with you and that word?" Jack sat down, playing with a snow flake.

"What's with you and playing with snow flakes?" I retorted, rolling my eyes.

"Better than playing with flowers."

"Says who?" I looked him straight in the eye, daring him to say what he was thinking.

"Says me." he replied.

"Since when has your authority over that been confirmed?" I focused on the snow flake, causing it to melt. He glared at me,

"Since yo-" he was interrupted by Tooth clearing her throat.

"We are here for a reason, though, right?" she looked at North. "Something about Pitch?"

"He just happens to have a huge army of dark creepy eggs." Bunny said, disgusted.

"First, he made a counter to Sandy's dreams, now he made a counter to Easter eggs. Manny says he's going to make a counter to all of our strengths." North said.

"Manny?" I ask, raising an eyebrow.

"Man in Moon." North replied, looking up at the half moon barely visible in the daylight.

"He talks to you? Like, frequently?" I ask.

"Whenever he wants to say something." Bunny says, looking at the moon.

"Huh." I shook my head. "I still don't understand what all of this has to do with me." North moved over to the side, revealing the statue everyone was looking at. "What is that?" I asked, cautiously. The statue just happened to be of me.
