Chapter 1
Ava's POV
Do you ever do something grand? Something you think is going to be an amazing adventure but instead it's terrifying? Yea that's pretty much what I did. After graduating college in my small town with a teaching degree I jumped right into work.
I started at a great school. The kids were well behaved and they loved to learn. But there was no real challenge there. So the next year I switched to a D grade school. The kids didn't really want to listen. In fact most of them didn't even wanna be there. They were bored and played around.
But I had a feeling I could inspire them. And by the end of the year my class went from making d's and f's to a's and b's. The principle was really impressed with me. The next year she won an award. Then my fourth year teaching I got a phone call from a school in New York. That was a pretty far ways from my small town in Louisiana.
But I had always loved an adventure. So there was no question. I was going to take the job. I saved every penny and over summer break moved. I rented one of those large U-Haul trucks and attached my car to the back. With everything loaded down I set out.
My family was torn with me leaving but they understood. We weren't terribly close as it was. But knowing I had something to come home to made the move a bit easier. The drive was long and I had to take a few days to get there. But finally I pulled into the big city. I was totally unsure of what to do when I got there. So I decided to drive by the school. Then I looked for apartments close by. I didn't really have the luxury of being picky. I needed something today. I couldn't just sleep in my car. Although being that it was New York it probably happened more than you would think.
The city wasn't really spaced out like I thought it would be. Everything was close together. I debated if I even needed my car at all. But I could sort that out later. The closest apartment building to the school was a brick monster. It towered over the green lawn at three stories.
I parked in the massive parking lot and went inside. Once I knew they had an opening, the little woman behind the counter dug a key from a drawer and headed out to show me the apartment. "Now dear I don't have a clue as to what the builder of this place was thinking. He built these things so out of order and it drives me nuts on the daily." "What do you mean?" I asked confused. She motioned with her hand. "They're just all scattered about. One bed room next to a four bedroom. Two bedroom next to a three." "Oh, that is really weird." "You're telling me."
She jingled the key in front of a door. "Lucky you, first floor. This apartment includes everything. Electricity and water. Then cable and internet. There are trash dumpsters around the corner. Rent is due by the fifth of every month. If you're interested, I'll need first and last months rent and a security deposit." She slipped the key in turning the knob. The door opened with a flourish.
The apartment was exactly what I'd expect for New York. Trendy and a bit on the small side. The kitchen was small with an area for a table. It opened into a smallish living room. I walked down the hallway and found the bedroom. It had an attached bathroom. I was surprised to find a shower tub combo. I walked back out and nodded. "I'll take it." "Great dearie, let's go back to the office and get everything taken care of."
