"Did you know that Skylor Chen is dating Nya Smith's brother?" Harumi whispered to Vania, apparently thinking she was quiet enough that I wouldn't hear her.

"Excuse me?" I hissed, "No she wouldn't, she hates him."

There was no way my best friend would ever date my stupid brother. He'd liked her for at least a year by now, but she'd always rejected his advances, and for good reasons, too. Kai was an idiot, and Skylor, on the other hand, was not.

Harumi turned around in her chair, pretending as if she'd just noticed my presence. "Oh, oops, I didn't mean for you to hear this, Nya, I'm sorry. But I guess I shouldn't hide it from you for too long, they are dating, you should've seen that makeout session in the parking lot yesterday afternoon. Seems to me like things are getting heated."

I rolled my eyes and leaned back in my chair, folding my arms across my chest. "Sure, whatever."

As if on cue, Skylor, her red hair down for the first time in what felt like forever, came into the classroom, a noticeable skip in her step. When she saw me, her grin seemed to brighten as she took the seat next to mine.

"You seem cheery," I said.

"Uh, yeah, I guess," she replied, her face getting slightly pinker.

"Isn't Kai hot?" Harumi asked, flipping her blonde hair off her shoulder.

"Eww, no," Skylor mumbled, bending down to pull her laptop out of her backpack and allowing her hair to fall all over her face.

"I like your hair today," Vania said.

"Oh, uh, thanks," my best friend replied, her locks still partially covering her face after getting back up.

"Lloyd told me he saw you making out with Kai yesterday."

"Cut it out, Harumi," I snapped, wondering when the teacher was going to come in. I literally couldn't remember the last time he was on time. "Just ignore her, Skylor. I trust that you wouldn't run off with that nitwit, especially without telling me."

She nodded meekly, her face flushing red. I frowned slightly, since normally if anyone dared to ship her with Kai my best friend would be absolutely disgusted, and not a blushing mess. But she wouldn't, so a more likely explanation would be that she did do something with a guy, but she'd rather be shipped with my dumb brother than have the actual identity of the boy get out. Yeah, that must've been what had happened. And Kai was just spreading rumors because he was obsessed, and Lloyd would obviously help him because they were partners in crime.

"Hey, what happened though?" I whispered, "You can tell me. Don't worry, I'm not stupid enough to listen to these rumors and think you'd actually give in to him."

"Yeah..." Skylor replied, still refusing to meet my eyes.

"Look," I said, leaning closer, "As long as you didn't do anything with Jay I'll be fine with it."

"I didn't," she assured me.

"I know you wouldn't. Okay, you know what, I'm just gonna text Kai and tell him to stop."

"Wait―" Skylor whispered just as the teacher finally walked in, and quickly closed her mouth.

I pulled out my phone and shot a text to him.

"God, he's an idiot," I muttered, shoving my phone back into my pocket.

Skylor shoved a sticky note onto my desk.

ok fine hes cute

"WHAT?"

Everyone in my class turned to stare at me, and Skylor's face was about as red as her hair. Harumi was shaking with laughter. I vaguely noticed I was standing up and quickly sat back down.

"Nya? You good?" the teacher asked, frowning at me through his spectacles.

I nodded, feeling the heat rising in my cheeks.

As soon as the remainder of the class returned to their lesson, I sent a text to my best friend.

I just stared at her incredulously, thankfully unable to imagine her face pressed against my dumb brother's. Just the idea of Skylor even being slightly intimate with Kai made me feel nauseous, as she normally would purposefully go to the opposite side of the room just to avoid him.

And Harumi now had on an expression that was so smug it took every ounce of my willpower to not punch her face.

"Okay, we're talking later," I hissed, "This conversation isn't over yet."

Skylor's face somehow turned even redder, but she nodded.
