janitor (drive thru au)

fluorescent lights flickered overhead, their sickly yellow glows highlighting the cracks on the floor as well as the water trickling down the walls from the ceiling. the sun had set by now and with my mop still in hand, i dragged myself over to close the shutters, yawning.

if someone walked into the room, they'd probably ask why i was still holding a dry mop even though i'd finished cleaning for the day. i didn't know why either, but somehow, i found myself attached to this cleaning utensil, as much as i hated to admit it. then again, it was a gift my sister had gotten me when i told her about my new job.

she said she'd designed it herself and there were some cool gimmicks she'd put in there. it wasn't like i was ever going to use them, but i thanked her anyway.

of course, i made her promise not to tell anyone else, not even our parents or her husband. if they ever found out i was not living the dream life with a hot girlfriend as i claimed to be and instead working a minimum wage job as a janitor... it was even worse when i thought about how my ex must be having the time of her life on her island, probably happily married with a guy who actually appreciated her.

apparently my sister was still friends with her, but i never asked her for updates on how she was doing, since i knew it would only make me feel worse. my sister never brought her up either, but i had seen them hanging out together in the park before.

it was so strange, seeing them like that. like we lived in different worlds, and in a way, that was, indeed, the case.

honestly, if she ever saw me on the street, i doubted she'd recognize me, and that, i guess, was a good thing. i couldn't remember the last time i looked into a mirror.

after putting away all my equipment, i made my way towards the exit of the building, my footsteps echoing ominously in the empty hallway. cracks of light from the bottoms of the doors of my colleagues who were working overtime faintly illuminated the floors, and i glanced at the time on my phone to find that it was 9:30.

with a sigh, i stepped outside, greeted at once by a chilling wind which sent goosebumps up my arms. i hissed and wrapped my arms around my body, the thin uniform i wore providing little warmth. normally this was when my powers would come into use, but if anyone recognized me and saw how pathetic i looked, it would be all over the news and i'd never hear the end of it.

bright headlights continued to temporarily blind me as the occasional car drove by, and i dug my hands deep into my pockets so that i wouldn't scratch my itchy scalp and be reminded once again of how filthy i was.

i told myself that, honestly, i was better off just not thinking about my miserable life, or anything in that matter.

so i continued my walk back to the trailer park where i lived, my mind blank.

A/N: uh

honestly, I am feeling better now.
