Chapter 8

Ever since she'd woken up, all Iris could remember was pain. Excruciating pain, even with all the drugs she could tell had been pumped into her system. The next thing she realized the mask on her face and the tube down her throat, along with a few other places.

Then everything started coming back to her in flashes. The attack, the ambush, the explosions. And she could remember watching her teammates, her friends, die in the blast while she'd survived, though clearly not unscathed considering the pain she was in.

Speaking of which, she started to groan in pain to get the nurse's attention, even though the hospital was currently on def com one.

"Ms. West, you're awake." a nurse said quickly as she moved to get a doctor to start looking Iris over.

Iris tried to speak, but she couldn't with the mask on her face and more importantly, the tube down her throat. Which was getting more and more uncomfortable with every second that passed.

"Hang on Ms. West. We'll get that tube out in a minute." her doctor promised as she struggled to move and panic.

"Iris, please calm down before you do more damage." the nurse said as she tried to calm Iris down as she continued to struggle as best she could until she realized that only one of her limbs were working in any way right now, in fact, she could only feel her left arm. She couldn't feel her legs or her right arm. That was when she finally realized what was missing. She looked down and saw under the blankets that the only thing left of her right arm was a short stump from her shoulder.

"Ms. West, please calm down. I promise you'll be okay." the doctor said as he carefully removed the mask and tube from her throat.

"What happened to me?" was the first thing Iris asked, her voice rough and raspy after months of misuse.

"You were in an explosion overseas. You're lucky to be alive at all. But you didn't come out unscathed. In order to save your life, the medics overseas had to amputate your right arm to prevent infection and the explosion did severe damage to your spine. You're paralyzed from the waist down." the doctor said as gently as he could.

"But I'm home now right?" was the next thing Iris asked.

"Yes, you're in recovery in Central City. Your family is in the waiting room and I think they'll all be happy to hear that you're awake." the nurse said.

"Are any members of my team out there?" Iris asked, since she was pretty sure that she knew the answer, she needed to hear it out loud.

"Your comrade Gabriella Gomez is out there, but I'm afraid that you were the only other survivor of the attack." the doctor said regretfully.

"Thank you. I want to see her and if he's out there, my boyfriend Barry Allen." Iris said.

"Give us one moment to go get them." the nurse said.

"Thank you." Iris said as she laid back down on her pillow and tried her best to put off the guilt and grief that was hitting her over the loss of her comrades and feeling rage towards the man she was sure was responsible for their deaths. Her former commanding officer, general Wade Eiling.

But she was pulled from her thoughts when she heard the door to her room open and the nurse showed Barry and Gabriella into her room.

"Iris." Barry said as he rushed to her bedside.

"Hey baby. This isn't exactly how I pictured our reunion when I came home." Iris said with a weak chuckle.

"I'm just happy you came home at all and let's agree that you're done with the military." Barry said.

"I couldn't go back overseas even if I wanted to." Iris said, referring to her injuries.

"Star Labs has some tech that might be able to help you recover. At the very least, help you walk again." Barry said.

"Yeah, but I'm not sure she should use it." Gabriella said.

"Why?" Iris asked her best friend.

"Because I did some checking and not only is Star Labs in disgrace right now after their particle accelerator blew up and even if it hadn't, the tech Dr. Wells wanted to use to help you was originally funded under a contract with General Eiling." Gabriella said.

"Yeah no, I'd rather be paralyzed for the rest of my life then let anything that Eiling is connected to be surgically attached to my body. Especially when there's a good chance it could give him control of it." Iris said.

"Are you sure?" Barry asked.

"I'm positive. You'll have to find another way to help me, because I don't want anything to do with anything associated with Eiling, since I'm positive that he's the reason I'm in this condition in the first place, since he sent my unit into a trap. The rest of my unit is dead because of him." Iris insisted and Barry nodded, knowing better than to try and change her mind, especially when she could see her point.

"What was so urgent you needed me to come here now when I should be projecting the image of the injured pariah Harrison Wells?" Eobard Thawne asked Gideon as he stood in the Time Vault, despite the fact that the doctors of this century said that he was paralyzed from the waist down. It never failed to marvel him at how lucky the 21st century was to have survived this long with how inferior their technology was compared to his own time in the 25th century.

"Despite your calculations, I have discovered an unexpected complication to the timeline that could disrupt your plans and maybe even alert the time wraiths to your location." Gideon said, removing Thawne's agitation and giving her his full attention.

"What is it?" Thawne asked.

"It would appear that your arrangement with General Eiling was a smart move in the short-term, it has led to long term consequences for the entire timeline." Gideon said.

"How?" Thawne asked.

"The explosion Iris West was in has severely compromised her ability to reproduce, which in turn threatens the stability of the timeline." Gideon said and Thawne pounded the plinth.

"No, I checked, the historical records always said that Iris West was in that explosion. It shouldn't have affected the timeline." Thawne said.

"True, but General Eiling was never supposed to be involved in putting her back together. Your involvement with him has risked the existence of XS, Impulse and all other future Flash descendants, which compromises the entire timeline and could potentially erase the future you're attempting to return to." Gideon said and Thawne sighed.

"Damn it. Recommendations on how to correct the error before the time wraiths find me or irreparable damage is done to the timeline." Thawne asked her.

"You need to hand off Ms. West's treatment to the people who were supposed to take care of her in the original timeline. Argo Enterprises. And specifically its CEO and Barry Allen's future ally, Kara Danvers, aka, Supergirl." Gideon said.
