Chapter 49
Thawne had just finished the latest tests on his device, which was built from parts he'd managed to scavenge over the years, plus the tachyon prototype he'd recently 'acquired' from Argo Enterprises.
He still held disdain for the fact that as a younger man, he'd idolized the company and what it would eventually become in his time and its founder Kara Danvers, who was considered the mother of the future in his time, considering how much of her technology had shaped his world. But now he felt nothing but rage towards her and all other heroes from this time, but he couldn't deny that the woman knew how to build some very useful toys.
However, he was disappointed by the results he was seeing from his tests.
"Still won't stabilize beyond five percent?" Thawne asked.
"I'm afraid not Professor Thawne. Your negative tachyon infused cells resist the positive tachyons you are attempting to use to jumpstart your speed. They're not compatible and the more you attempt to do so, the higher the probability is that you will alert the positive speed force and her time wraiths to your location." Gideon said and Thawne sighed, since he knew the AI was right. He was already cutting it close with how much he'd changed the timeline since he'd killed Barry's mother. And the worst part was that it was a fixed point, so even if Thawne could recover enough speed to travel backwards in time, he couldn't stop himself from making the mistake that would condemn him to this hell in the past no matter how hard he tried.
"There has to be a way short of reconfiguring the device for negative tachyons, since that requires time and tools, neither of which I have." Thawne said as he continued to check his data.
"Perhaps you could turn your attention to a different speed force expert." Gideon said.
"There's no way in hell Henry Allen would agree to help me and Barry would rather shove his hand through my heart." Thawne said.
"I'm not talking about speedsters. I'm talking about someone who's as obsessed with them as you once were. Someone who wishes to gain speed of his own." Gideon said as she played a series of images to show Wally West secretly studying the accident that had given Barry his speed.
"Impressive. Especially for someone his age in this time period to be trying to figure out how to tap into the speed force. Perhaps we should help Wally speed up his experiments." Thawne said.
"That won't be necessary, since according to the revised timeline, the day Wally West gains his own superspeed will be tomorrow night while working in his school's chemistry lab during the surprise storm." Gideon said.
"Then we have work to do and not a whole lot of time to do it. Time to get to work." Thawne said.
"Right away Professor." Gideon said and Thawne grinned as he got to work.
The next night found Wally West working late in the chemistry lab at Central City High. He told his parents that he was doing late night work on a chemistry project, when in reality, this was where he'd moved his experiments for turning himself into a speedster, since despite the promise he'd made to his father, Wally was obsessed with the idea and he couldn't let it go. He couldn't shake the feeling that he was supposed to be a speedster, regardless of what his father and Barry had told him, though in Barry's case, it had been because he felt he himself was still too green to be able to teach Wally anything, but now, his future brother-in-law was a pretty experienced speedster, since between his dad's tutelage and Barry's own ingenuity, he'd already been quick to master most speedster moves, including what Wally assumed were more advanced abilities like phasing and throwing lightning. Wally was sure that Barry could teach him everything now.
Especially since Barry had already become Wally's mentor in a way, since unlike the rest of his family, who were soldiers and reporters, Wally was a scientist, so when it came to getting help in his advanced science classes, Barry was the go to guy for help.
But anyways, from studying the Flash and his own notes, Wally had finally figured out the exact chemicals Barry had been hit with, the ratios and almost everything necessary. The only thing he was missing was the one thing he couldn't control. The lightning bolt. So when this storm appeared out of nowhere, Wally saw the chance he needed to become what he was meant to be.
"I really hope this works, since once I start the reaction, I can't stop it and if it doesn't work, I'm dead." Wally said to himself as he prepared to set off the chemical reaction, that if his calculations were correct, would create an explosion similar to the one Barry was in the night he got struck by lightning. The only issue he still hadn't worked out was the lightning part, but he'd come too far to turn back now and it was only a matter of time until he got busted, so he had to try.
Little did he know that someone else was helping him from the shadows.
"Gideon, I've planted the device, is it functioning?" Thawne asked as he quickly sped in and out of the lab without being noticed anything more than a gust of wind, grateful that his speed hadn't given out yet.
"Yes. The transference device you planted in Wally West is active and synced up to the device inside you and I've recalibrated the school's electrical systems to attract a lightning bolt to strike him. Once the connection to the speed force has been established, the device will begin to siphon a small portion of that energy and convert it to negative speed force energy before transferring it to the device in you, which will stabilize and restore your full connection to the negative speed force and your full powers." Gideon said.
"And then the real fun can begin. Now let's get this started." Thawne said as he watched Wally set off the explosion that would change his life forever.
And right on schedule, as the chemical reaction exploded, Thawne and Gideon's adjustments drew a lightning bolt in through the window and struck Wally at the same time he was hit by the explosion, knocking him out cold, but triggering the reaction both he and Thawne had wanted and Thawne grinned as he felt the device kick in as his speed suddenly increased and became stronger, more stable, until he felt like he was back to his original level.
"Gideon, cut off the devices now." Thawne said with a grin as he put on his suit and started vibrating with his eyes glowing red as the device shut off, since it had more than done its job and now Wally West was still getting what he wanted. They both had.
Thawne grinned as he got to his feet, feeling more powerful than he had in years.
The Reverse Flash had been truly reborn and now it was time to get back to work.
