Chapter 3
When Barry came too, he found himself lying in a hospital bed with his stepsister Caitlin fussing over him.
"What's going on?" Barry asked and Caitlin smiled.
"And the zombie lives." Caitlin said to her brother dryly.
"Seriously Caitlin, what happened and why are you my doctor, I thought that was frowned upon?" Barry asked, since technically doctors weren't encouraged to treat their own family members.
"Technically I'm just a volunteer here, since I still work at Star Labs, so it's an exception. As for what's going on, you were struck by lightning." Caitlin said as it all came back to Barry.
"Really, cuz I feel great." Barry said and it was true, he'd never felt better.
"Yeah, especially since it seems like that lightning bolt gave you abs." Caitlin said with a smirk, since Barry did have a 6 pack now that he definitely didn't have before the lightning struck.
"How long have I been out?" Barry asked.
"A few days. Honestly, you woke up a lot faster than most lightning coma patients would. And you're in much better health since when you were first brought in, your entire body was covered in severe burns, but now, you've never looked better. It's incredible." Caitlin said as she went over Barry's charts as the door to Barry's hospital room opened and Caitlin was surprised when her boss entered the room.
"Dr. Wells, what are you doing here?" Caitlin asked him.
"Well Caitlin, you spoke so highly of your brother that I wanted to take the chance to finally meet him. And I think that we should have him transferred to Star Labs so that we can determine how Mr. Allen was able to recover from his lightning strike so quickly. It could lead to potential medical breakthroughs and since it'll technically be scientific research and not just Barry being a patient, you can examine him, Caitlin. I've already had our lawyers confirm that." Wells said.
"I think that's a good idea, since this is the kind of research we should be focused on, despite the fact that the accelerator is still a top priority." Caitlin said.
"Caitlin, the accelerator was Tess's dream project. I have to see it through." Wells said.
"Who's Tess?" Barry asked.
"Tess Morgan was my wife. She died around the same time your mother did, though she died in a car accident. I was lucky to survive it myself. But building Star Labs and the particle accelerator, it was her dream. That's why I created it, so that I could honor her memory." Wells said and Barry nodded.
"I'll get everything set so that once Barry's cleared, the hospital can transfer him to Star Labs, though I don't think we'll need to keep him there." Caitlin said and Wells nodded.
"Agreed. Also Caitlin, I want this kept confidential. The only people in Star Labs who know about this project are us, your brother and Cisco. I don't want to risk people finding out about Barry until we have time to properly understand what's happened to him, since I get the feeling that we've only seen the tip of how much that lightning affected you." Wells said and Barry nodded, right as the door opened and this time, Barry's father and Caitlin's mother came rushing in.
"We came as soon as we got Caitlin's text that you were awake." Henry said, though none of the members of the Allen/Snow family noticed the look on Wells' face as he looked at Henry.
"Dad, Carla, I'm fine." Barry said.
"And that is what concerns me." Henry said, since as a doctor like Caitlin, he was concerned about how quickly Barry was recovering.
"Which is why I'm having Barry transferred to Star Labs so that I can study how the lightning affected Barry." Wells said.
"I want daily updates on my son's condition and I want full access to all data collected. There is no way I am going to let you keep us out of the loop regarding our son's health." Carla said.
"I can agree to that as long as you agree not to share any of our findings with the world at this time, since I don't think that's a wise course of action until we fully understand how Barry was changed." Wells said and Carla nodded.
"Deal." Carla said.
"Have you gotten in touch with Iris yet?" Barry asked.
"Not yet, but that's understandable considering she's on the other side of the world and actively deployed. I left several messages for her to call me as soon as she could, but for now we're going to have to wait." Caitlin said, right as Joe burst into the room, a look of panic on his face.
"Joe, what's going on?" Barry asked.
"Barry, as good as it is to see you up and about, I just got a call from General Wade Eiling." Joe said and Barry's heart sank.
"Iris's commanding officer." Barry said.
"Iris's unit was ambushed, though the General won't tell me what happened exactly, but there were only two survivors, one of whom thankfully is Iris, but according to the general, she's in bad shape, they're keeping her overseas until her condition has stabilized enough for her to be transported stateside." Joe said.
"I know Eiling, Star Labs did some contract work with his unit a few years ago and while our parting wasn't sweet, I'll reach out and see if I can get any more information from him and see if there's anything Star Labs can do to help with Iris's recovery." Wells said and Joe nodded at him thankfully.
"Thank you." Joe said as Wells left them alone, none of them noticing the grin on his face, since things were unfolding exactly the way they were supposed to.
