Chapter 21
Barry was exhausted, since right now, he and Gabriella were in the gym, sparring, though his father had locked a metahuman power dampening cuff that he'd gotten from Argus when he first arrived on this Earth, on his wrist so that he could use his speed and Gabriella was putting him through his paces.
"Damn, I really miss my speed healing." Barry said, since he'd discovered early on that he healed much faster than normal and right now, he could really use that.
"Which is exactly why we're doing this. No pain, no gain. It took Iris and I months of training on a military base to get to where we are and Iris is likely gonna have to start from the beginning again once she gets out of the chair, since we both know that science will find a way to help her." Gabriella said and Barry nodded, though he was panting and sweaty as he downed a bunch of water from his water bottle.
"Wimp." Gabby said, since she'd barely gotten started.
"You're enjoying this a bit too much aren't you?" Barry asked and Gabby smirked.
"Iris might have asked me to beat you up a bit since you're babying her, which she does not appreciate. The only reason she's not here right now cheering me on is that she's at her mandated psychiatrist appointment, since she needs it more than I do, though I am still going to mine." Gabby said.
"Good, but what's going on between you and Caitlin?" Barry asked, since he'd seen the way Gabby and his stepsister looked at each other.
"What, nothing's going on between us." Gabby said a little too quickly as she threw another punch at Barry, but she was so distracted that he actually managed to dodge it with minimal effort.
"Yeah, because that was convincing. What's going on?" Barry asked.
"I am not talking to Caitlin's brother about this." Gabby said.
"Yes you are, since I'm not going to let my sister get hurt because you're messing around with her, sending her mixed signals." Barry said.
"I'm not messing around with anyone. I'm not sure what exactly is going on between Caitlin and I. I mean I like her and I think she likes me too, but I'm the kind of girl who comes from a tough neighborhood. I've had to put up walls around people my entire life, it's how I survived. Meanwhile, Caitlin is a girl who basically grew up in high society with her rich scientist mother and doctor stepfather. We're from two completely different worlds. She can do better." Gabby said.
"Yeah, she's tried going out with some of those so-called high society snobs as you call them. It never ended well, since she always said that both the boys and girls were too soft for her. She wants someone who fights back and has strong opinions." Barry said.
"And she's not seeing anyone now right, since I don't want to find out that she's been stringing me along." Gabby said and Barry shook his head.
"No. Before she came out, the guys were lucky if she even stayed till the end of the first date and then after she came out, she always seemed to find something wrong with the girls she dated. None of them were right for her. She was kind of infamous for it in school." Barry said, not harshly, but to let Gabby know exactly what she was getting herself into.
"Good to know. Any suggestions?" Gabby asked.
"Look, all I can suggest is talking this out with her, since the longer you put this off, the worse things are going to get." Barry said.
"It's not easy. I actually kept my sexuality secret while I was in the marines to keep myself safe from ridicule. At least until Iris figured it out and helped me come out and made me realize I was being ridiculous." Gabby said and Barry smiled.
"I know. Iris told me how she hugged you and told you how strong you were before she began to start asking me to send pictures of myself and Caitlin over to her." Barry said with a chuckle.
"And let me guess, she started sending pictures of me home for Caitlin to see. She's been trying to play matchmaker for Caitlin and I since before Caitlin and I officially met." Gabby said, honestly not at all surprised and a bit amused and grateful that Iris was trying to help her.
"Iris loved playing matchmaker in high school. Her greatest regret was never fixing Caitlin up with a lasting relationship." Barry said.
"Of course she was. But do you have any ideas on how I can make things work with Caitlin, since I don't just want to be another person she goes through before finding a flaw in them." Gabby said.
"Like I said, just talk to her." Barry said.
"I think I'd rather go back to Afghanistan and be in the middle of a firefight." Gabby said and Barry chuckled.
"Take this cuff off and I'll be happy to run you over there." Barry offered.
"Very funny. But seriously." Gabby said.
"Well one thing's for sure, Caitlin won't just be satisfied by the physical aspect. She needs someone who's smart enough to at least hold a conversation with her. While looks are nice, she's more attracted to brains." Barry said.
"Well, my IQ is 150 and while I'm not a science nerd, I can keep up with a basic conversation." Gabby said and Barry smiled.
"Then talk to her and stop making yourself miserable." Barry said.
