Main Characters

What better way to start than the character that every story revolves around? Surely there can't be too many cliches revolving them. Right?

1.) The Main Character is some type of special wolf

Whether it be that they're the white wolf or blessed by the Moon Goddess herself (sometimes both), the Main Character is "not like other girls." That is if the MC is a woman after all. I get that you want to separate your MC from the rest, but maybe try to do it by giving them a personality? They can be your average joe that can have a romance with another werewolf.

2.) Drastic Personality Changes in About 2 Chapters

The story starts out with a super bad-girl ish woman who "don't need no man" let alone a mate. Then she meets her mate who's one of two personalities: shy, lovable nerd who just wants to treat her right or raging asshole who's supposedly more of a bad-boy than she is. After a chapter, maybe two, she's full on girly girl that can't be two inches from the guy. Is the story still following the same person? Where did the character from chapter 1 go?

3.) I'm ugliest person you'll ever meet ... but let me describe myself as insanely beautiful for the next paragraph

Girl. You can't call yourself an ugly beast in one breath and then describe yourself in the mirror with all of these typically beautiful features in the next breath. That's not how it works. I've been riddled with insecurities my entire life, but I can always find at least one or two things I like about myself. If you can't do that, you need a therapist. I mean you need a therapist for multiple other reasons, but that's just the first reason at least.

4.) Trauma = Personality

The amount of stories that start with the main character being abused, and in a disturbing amount of cases raped repeatedly, is terrifying. In most cases the story revolves around the love interest "fixing" them in some way through the power of love! Like no, this person needs years of therapy which doesn't fix the problem. It just aids in it. I instantly stop reading a story when the love interest gets furious with the main character when they can't ... *ahem* ... with them. Excuse me sir, this MC went through YEARS of torture essentially and all you're worried about is yourself. If you're really that worried about that, go take some alone time if you know what I mean.

5.) Self-Insert Characters/Mary Sues

Every genre struggles with self-insert character or plain Mary Sues, but the werewolf genre is flooded with them. It seems that everyone wants to have a werewolf boyfriend who is fated to them. If I have to read another story that follows a main character that has 0 personality whatsoever I might just leave Wattpad for good.

6.) Humans that Don't Have Any Fear

This man that I just met says that I'm his "mate" right before turning into a literal animal. Welp I guess I'm just gonna go with him now and believe every word he says. Who cares if I never see my family again? It's worse when the werewolf in this scenario doesn't shift in front of them, but their eyes change colors and they treat that as if it's an ordinary experience.

At the very least show some type of reaction to it. If that was me I would be freaking out, or at least planning the quickest route away from this person. The money I would pay to be as nonchalant as some werewolf MCs. Someone would make a killing if they managed to make that in a pill form just for people with anxiety.

7.) Mute Main Character

I never understood why this type of main character became so popular. They become selectively mute, or fully mute in some stories, in most cases because of some past trauma. It could just be that they're upset at certain family members for whatever reason. The story then proceeds to be about their mate "fixing" them being mute. For starters, why would the story follow that instead of just relying on romance anyways. To me it seems kinda ableist since the love interest is swooping in to "fix" a disability which they were living with for a while instead of just loving them for how they are. But that's just me.

That's all of the ones I can think for right now, but stick around. I have way more in store for this. I'm gonna go over all of the other sins of the werewolf genre. Until then, see you next time. Maybe go check out my other stories in the mean time.

Comment who your favorite werewolf Main Character is :D
