Chapter 58: You wear longuewear well

Katie
I wake up with a huge smile. Yesterday was by far the best day of my entire life.

The smell of waffles drifts into my room while I'm scrolling through the pictures I took yesterday.

My stomach growls for the fourth time in three minutes so I finally roll out of bed.

"What has you so smiley?" Derek asks mixing waffle batter. Ava is working the waffle iron and Izzy is sitting on Tyler's lap.

"I don't know. Maybe it has to do with the fact that Wyatt kissed me last night," I say taking a plate out of the cabinet.

"Ah!" Ava and Izzy scream in unison.

I laugh and take in the boy's expressions.

Derek looks violently ill and Tyler looks... well normal.

Weird.

Izzy jumps out of Tyler's lap and leaps onto a bar stool to be closer to me. "We need every detail."

"No, we don't," Derek snaps.

I pat his shoulder. "Don't worry I'm not going to say anything."

"What, no. Come on Derek quit being a big ass baby," Ava says frustrated.

Derek turns around. "I don't want to hear about how my little sister kissed a boy. Thank you very much."

Ava sticks her tongue out at Derek.

"So, did he confess his undying love to you?" Tyler asks.

"Uh no, we just kissed," I say.

"Oh."

Ava takes out a waffle and Derek pours more batter into the waffle iron. "Are you going to tell him how you feel?" Ava asks.

I take a deep breath. "Yeah, I am."

"Tonight we're going to a party at Stacy's and I'm going to tell him there."

Tyler takes a giant bite out of his waffle. "You should wait for Wyatt to tell you his feelings."

Ava, Izzy, and I shoot Tyler a nasty glare. "And why should she do that?" Ava asks coldly.

Tyler rolls his eyes and swallows a bite of a waffle. "I have nothing against a girl making the first move, but I know Wyatt. I'm sure he has this elaborate plan about telling you how he feels."

Tyler shoves another forkful into his mouth. "Let him get nervous and grow a pair."

I sigh. "What if he doesn't feel the same way."

Everyone looks at me like I just said Elvis was cloned by aliens. "Gracie, I'm going to give you some brotherly wisdom."

Derek points the whisk at me. "Guys like Wyatt don't go around kissing girls they don't like."

"Yeah, Katie, I've seen Wyatt around you, he definitely likes you," Ava adds.

"I'll wait, but if the night is up and he still hasn't told me, I'm going to do it," I say sitting across for Tyler.

Something is different about Tyler.

I stare at his head to figure out what is different.

"Gosh Ty, what did you do to your hair?" I say laughing.

Tyler sighs. "I'm trying something new, alright."

Izzy sits back down on his lap. "Sweetheart, I don't think this is your look."

It definitely isn't.

"Yeah, you look like you're wearing a toupee," Ava says nonchalantly, causing us all to laugh.

I spend most of the day hanging out with them and then around six I get ready.

Deciding to keep it casual I go with white wash jeans that flare out at the bottom and a black long-sleeve shirt that wraps around the front and ties in the back. I pair it with cowgirl boots.

I hear the front door open and Tyler's loud voice. "Hey Sweetcheeks, you look mighty fine."

"You wear loungewear well, Sugarlips," I hear Wyatt say.

I laugh quietly and grab my things.

I see Wyatt before he sees me. He is wearing jeans and a dark navy blue shirt with his letterman jacket over it.

Wyatt sees me and smiles his award-winning smile. "Hey Kate, you look amazing."

"You look good too, Just Wyatt."

Tyler is sitting in one of the recliners in the living room. "Ty where's Derek?"

"He went with Ava to get something to eat. Oh, and they dropped Izzy off at home as well."

I nod my head.

"You ready to go?" I ask Wyatt.

"Yep."

"Don't forget to lock the door when you leave," I yell to Tyler as I close the door.

We talk the whole car ride to the party but never mention the kiss.

Seeing Wyatt my stomach clenched up from nerves.

What if he regrets the kiss?

What if doesn't feel the same as me?

I quickly shake my head to clear my thoughts.

Wyatt parks on the side of the road and we both stare at the house.

There are a lot of people.

"We can always go to Burger King instead of the party," Wyatt says.

I give him a reassuring look. "Wyatt, I'll be with you the whole time."

Wyatt sighs. "I'm holding you to that."

We both get out and Wyatt grabs my hand.

I give his hand a light squeeze. "If you get uncomfortable let me know."

He nods his head.

When we get inside there are people everywhere and it smells like sweat mixed with feet.

Wyatt sees me scrunch up my nose and chuckles.

We make our way around the house and into the basement. That's where a drunk football player said Ryan is.

The music isn't as loud and the sweat smell isn't as strong.

Ryan and Gloria are sitting on bean bags, and Stacy and a few other people are sharing a big couch.

The only seat left is a loveseat. Wyatt sits down and I start to sit on the floor but Wyatt pulls beside him.

Beside him is putting it lightly, the loveseat is old causing us to sink into the couch. I'm practically in his lap.

This is different from sitting in his lap at the cafeteria table, I'm being swallowed by him.

Gloria talks to me for a while. Wyatt listens and joins in the conversation here and there.

Stacy abruptly stands up. "I'm going to get a drink. Wyatt, Katie do you want one?"

I shake my head. "Do you have lemonade?" Wyatt asks.

Stacy smiles. "Yeah. Would you like anything in it?"

"Nothing. Just lemonade." Wyatt says

Stacy walks upstairs.

"Katie, do you drink?" Ryan asks.

I sigh. "I have twice. I don't like the feeling of having no control over what I'm saying."

Ryan laughs. "Wyatt drank alcohol one time in his life and passed out after one beer."

Wyatt laughs. "I've never drank since."

Stacy brings back the drinks.

Wyatt takes a long drink of his lemonade.

"Geez Stacy, that's some strong lemonade," Wyatt says while wiping his mouth.

Stacy smiles. "My mom made it."

I continue to talk with Gloria, but unlike before Wyatt seems spacey and disoriented.

Gloria gets up to follow Ryan upstairs and I turn around to look at Wyatt. "Hey sweetie, everything okay?"

Wyatt gives me a dopey smile that makes me giggle. "You know your eyes are my favorite shade of green," Wyatt slurs.

I pat his cheek. "Wyatt, are you okay?"

He blinks fast. "Yeah, I think I need to go to the bathroom."

He stands up, I slide out of his lap and onto the seat.

"Do you need help?" I ask trying not to laugh.

"Nope, I got it," He says flashing his smile.

Seeing his smile reassures me.

I'm scrolling through my phone when I hear Stacy plop onto the bean bag chair beside me.

"Hey, Katie."

"What do you want Stacy?" I ask dryly.

"I need to tell you something."

She slowly blinks. "It's about Wyatt."

I turn so I can see her better. "Go on."

"You remember that girl Sofie?"

I nod my head.

"She asked Wyatt to help her with a cheer stunt and he has. Twice actually, but that's not the point."

Stacy takes a deep breath. "I think he's cheating on you."

I give her a deadpan look. "Why should I believe you?"

"I have proof."

My heart drops.

Stacy pulls out her phone and shows me a picture of Wyatt holding Sofie on his shoulders.

"Here's another one." She shows me one where his hands are around her waist and their faces are inches apart.

I feel my heart break. The way Sophie is staring into his eyes seems so intimate. "Can I see the date?"

Stacy shows me the date. The picture was taken Monday when he said he had to help a friend.

The other picture is dated Thursday when he said he had to pick his mom up from work.

The day I found out my dad was dating Clair.

I take a shaky breath and Stacy touches my shoulder. "I think Sofie has a thing for Wyatt."

I give her a tight-lipped smile. "Where's your bathroom?"

"Up the stairs to the left," Stacy says a bit to cheerfully.

I take the stairs two at a time. I wanted to leave but I need to hear Wyatt's side of the story.

I walk the short hall to the bathroom.

I notice the bathroom door is open.

I see two people against the door.

As I get closer I recognize a familiar brown wavy hair that I've come to love.

Sophie has Wyatt pushed against the bathroom door kissing him.

She has her arms wrapped around his neck and her body against his.

I watch Wyatt pull her closer to him.

My heart shatters in that one movement.

Hurt and jealousy flare through me. This is why I keep my heart guarded. I hate the fact that I care he's kissing someone else.

I wish I could go on like nothing happened.

After taking a deep breath I turn around and run. He might have shattered my heart but I wasn't going to show it.

I weave through people till I get to the kitchen. I'm almost to the front door but Stacy stops me.

"Leaving so soon? I guess you found Wyatt." Stacy says with a witchy smile.

I turn around slowly; blinking the tears away.
I was not going to cry in front of everyone.

"You knew didn't you," I say colder than ice.

Stacy shrugs. "Katie honey, it had to end sometime. You and Wyatt are in two totally different social classes."

I close my eyes and take a deep breath.

I'm done taking shit from her. "Stacy, I feel so sorry for you."

She tilts her head to the side, but I continue before she interrupts me.

"You're so insecure about yourself that you put other people down to make yourself feel better. You see someone like me and try to wear them down till they're nothing."

I smile a cocky smile that hides his hurt I am.
"Well, that's not going to work on me. I know my worth."

Stacy rolls her eyes. "I'm not insecure."

I raise my eyebrows and take a step closer to her. "All you do is look for people to bully. You think if your mean to everyone around you it will make people want to be your friend because you're better than everyone else."

I tilt my head side to side like I was contemplating something. "New flash you're not."

"These people around you are not your friends. They only hang out with you because they're scared of you. Because they want to be cool."

Stacy's face pales and she fidgets with her skirt.

"How many of these people would help you if you called them at two in the morning needing a ride home?"

I wait a few beats then continue. "None. You can bully me all you want, but it's not going to work. I don't need you, I don't need to be popular. Do you know why?"

Stacy's face hardens. "Because I have people that care about me."

I turn around and throw open her front door.

Before I shut it I turn back around. "You won Stacy, you got what you wanted."

I take a shaky breath. "Was it worth it?"

At this point, I can feel the tears streaming down my face.

I pull my phone out with shaking hands and dial the only number I know that will answer.

Guys this chapter sucked!!!

I almost changed my entire book around so I wouldn't have to write it, but I needed some type of conflict.

Also, who do you think she called?
