Chapter 40: Only the cool friends
Wyatt
"It's your turn missy," I yell to Katie. She frowns and walks over to me and Sammy.
I help Katie take Sammy's tack off and she jumps on. I stare at her and she smirks down at me. "What?"
"Didn't think I could jump on, Kent?"
I shake my head. She just jumped on Sammy from the ground and Sammy is taller than me. Katie said he's 16 hands tall, whatever that means.
Izzy flicks the whip and Sammy starts trotting in a circle around her.
Watching Katie is mesmerizing. It's like she is glued to the horse, I didn't see her slip once.
"Ready?" Izzy yells and Katie nods her head.
"Canter," Izzy tells Sammy and he hops into a gentle lope. Katie holds her arms out to the side.
After four laps Sammy slows down to a walk.
I start clapping and I see Katie's cheeks turn pink. "Well done Kate. That was amazing!"
Izzy unhooks the lunge line from Sammy's bridle and unties the reins.
"How did you do that?" I ask.
Katie smiles. "Izzy and I used to do all kinds of stupid stuff bareback. our legs get stronger over time."
"Remember that time we took our horses up the mountain bareback," Izzy says giggling.
"I couldn't walk for a week," Katie says grinning.
"Wyatt, get on behind Katie and I'll take some pictures," Izzy says as she gets her phone out of her pocket.
Katie shakes her head but I grin. "Sure."
I get on Sammy and wrap my arms around Katie to keep from slipping off.
Izzy takes about a hundred pictures and then we go back to the barn.
As we're riding back I see Jacob leading his horse to the arena. He waves and I wrap my arms tighter, pulling Katie closer to me. I glance over at him and see his eyes harden a fraction.
Izzy is looking at me with an unreadable expression.
Is it so bad that I won't this guy to stay away from Katie?
"Unfortunately kids I have a horse to ride still. See y'all later. Izzy yells as she walks out of the barn.
I help Katie put Sammy away and check Ripley's food and water.
When we get to her truck I jog to the driver's door and hop in. "I guess you're driving home?" Katie says dryly.
"Yep." I flash my signature smile.
"What are you doing when you get home?" I ask.
"I have a few chapters of a book to read for homework but besides that, nothing."
"Would you like to study at my house?" I ask like it's no big deal, but inside I'm freaking out.
"Yeah, I would love to, but I have to change clothes first," Katie says smiling.
Awe, she's changing clothes. I like the pants she's wearing now. I might like them too much.
I park her truck in her driveway. "I'll wait for you while you change," I tell Katie.
Katie gives me a weird look and hops out of the truck.
Katie
"Hey Gracie what's up?" Derek yells as soon as I walk in the door.
"I'm going to Wyatt's," I shout from the steps.
I hear him say something but I ignore him and go into my room.
I did through my closet trying to find something to wear. What did girls wear to study at someone's house?
I stop digging. Since when did I care what I looked like?
Ugh, Wyatt's got me all messed up.
I finally put on shorts and an oversized Scooby-Doo t-shirt.
I run downstairs and see Derek sitting in the living room.
"So you're going to Wyatt's?" I roll my eyes at him.
"Izzy said Wyatt got jealous today when y'all saw Jacob," Derek adds wiggling his eyebrows.
"She did not," I say defensively.
"Yes, she did," Tyler mumbles with food falling out of his mouth. He is eating leftover pizza straight from the box.
"See, she sent it in the group chat." Derek shows me the text on his phone.
"No, she didn't I would have-" I stop and notice the name of the group chat.
"Y'all have a group chat without me!" I yell.
I hear Tyler chuckle and Derek's face flushes.
"I get having a group chat without Tyler, but one without me, Derek!" I yell.
I hear Tyler drop the pizza he was eating into the box.
"Y'all have a chat without me?" Tyler whines.
I whip around and glare at him. "Some of us like to have serious conversations without cat GIFS and SpongeBob memes being sent every five minutes."
Tyler glares right back at me. "Well, we use that chat all the time. Want to know the name"
"It's called 'Only the cool friends'."
"I saw the name when Derek showed me the text. It's called. 'No Katie'." I say dryly
"Quit over-reacting it's not that bad," Derek says annoyed.
Suddenly I get a wicked idea. "I guess you know about the group chat we have without you too, then."
"Yeah, I figured since I don't go to school with you anymore."
"Oh no, Tyler made this chat 2 years ago," I say smirking.
Derek glares at Tyler and his face pales. I walk out the front door and skip to my truck.
"Does Tyler normally flip you off through the window when you leave?" Wyatt asks as I sit down.
I laugh. Sometimes it's so much fun to stir the pot.
Wyatt
We are currently sitting on my couch studying. Well, Katie is, but I couldn't focus.
She has her legs draped over my lap and is reading a book. Every so often she would stop and write down some notes.
I forcefully shut my laptop and look over at Katie. She didn't even flinch, and I shut my laptop hard.
She is so beautiful and she didn't even know it. Her hair fell in soft waves around her face and her eyebrows were slightly scrunched together in concentration.
The real kicker is her eyes. They are a deep green with a little bit of blue. I could stare at them all day.
She looks up at me with a puzzled look. "Is there something on my face?"
I smile softly. "No."
"I need to take a picture of us so I can post it," Katie says sitting up to grab her phone.
I frown. "Yeah, for the whole boyfriend-girlfriend, fake dating thing."
Katie takes her phone out and takes a few photos. She looks at her phone for a while.
"Just Wyatt what's wrong?" Katie asks.
I look at her. "Nothing."
"I'm serious Wyatt, what's wrong?" Katie asks more sternly.
I'm mad because she reminded me this is all fake. We are just fooling everyone around us.
I need to keep that in mind. It's hard, I've never felt this way about anyone in my entire life.
I smile but it's forced. "I'm sure, nothing wrong."
"Okay," Katie draws, apprehensively.
The front door opens and my mom walks in. "Hey, kiddos."
"Hey, Mom. I put some barbecue chicken in the oven." I turn and look at her over the couch.
"Hey, Margret," Katie says sweetly.
"I hope you invited Katie to join us for dinner." My mom tells me with an upset look.
"Um-" I say rubbing my neck.
"I'm sorry Katie my son has no manners."
"Would you like to stay for dinner?" My mom asks Katie.
"I would love to," Katie says looking at me with a teasing grin.
"Okay. I'm going to take a shower then we can eat." My mom yells from upstairs.
Katie swings her legs off me and onto the ground. "I love your mom."
"I'm sure you do," I mutter under my breath.
"That meal was delicious Wyatt." My mom tells me as she puts her plate in the sink.
"Yes, it was," Katies says getting up from the table.
I sit down on the couch and watch my mom and Katie talk as they load the dishwasher.
"My husband was the worst cook. One time he tried to make me breakfast and the fire department showed up because he caught my favorite pan on fire."
Katie laughs. "My dad is the same way I swear he can burn water."
"Do you cook a lot?" My mom asks Katie.
"Derek and I used to take turns who would make dinner till he got hurt. He's good at cooking, my dad wanted him to take classes but he wouldn't."
Once they finished Katie sat down beside me and my mom sat in the armchair across from us.
"I have this true crime show I like to watch but it scares Wyatt to death." My mom says as she turns on the tv.
"Oh, I love crime documentaries," Katie says smiling.
"Of course you do," I mumble.
Seriously my mom's teasing was enough but add Katie to the mix. Geez, I would have no self-respect or pride left.
Thirty minutes in and my mom and Katie are totally immersed in the show. I slowly moved closer to Katie, and now I'm hiding behind her. Every time something happens I squeeze Katie.
Katie's phone buzzes and she cheeks the time.
"Oh, I got to go it's already 9:30."
"Crap, really?"
"I didn't know it was so late." My mom says through a yawn.
Katie stands up and grabs her bag. "I enjoyed dinner thank you for having me over."
"Your welcome here anytime honey." My mom says.
I walk Katie to her car. "I had fun today," I say quietly.
"Me too Just Wyatt." She leans against her car door.
We stare into each other's eyes till she finally breaks and looks away.
"Bye."
"Bye Kate."
I walk inside and my mom is in the kitchen. "So you still caught up in the moment?"
I sigh and run a hand through my hair. "No, I think I've fallen for her."
Oh my gosh, 40 chapters!!! I can't believe it!
