Chapter 34: Put up the middle finger
Katie
I wake up an hour early. I know crazy right?
Today is game day and Izzy blackmailed me into looking nice. I took a shower and washed my hair. (Which I never do before school.)
I put a little bit of curling product in my hair and attach the diffuser attachment to my hairdryer.
Ten minutes and a sore arm later, my hair turned out extra wavy with tons of volume.
Afterward, I pick out my outfit.
I'm wearing mid-rise shorts and my school's team tank top.
This tank top has a funny backstory. Freshman year Izzy and I were so excited to go to our first football game we both bought matching team shirts.
On the back of Izzy's she embroidered 'Lochner'. She was one lovesick puppy.
My tank is gray with the school's mascot on the front (the mascot is a shark wearing sunglasses.)
You're probably wondering why I'm not wearing Wyatt's jersey. I'm waiting till the game to wear it.
So I don't get dressed coded I put on Wyatt's school jacket. (No not his letterman jacket.)
It was a windbreaker with his name and number on the back and It smelt just like him.
I may have stolen it from his car last night.
I take the front pieces of my hair and braid them back tying them with blue and gray ribbons.
Lastly, I put on some blue eyeliner and lipgloss.
I look in my floor-length mirror, and for once I'm not disappointed in the reflection staring back at me.
I get to school a few minutes early.
I'm walking towards my locker when I hear a high picked shriek.
"Katie, you look so good!" Izzy screams.
I turn around and see Izzy.
She is wearing one of Tyler's jerseys with a white golfing skirt. Her long black curls are tied up into space buns with blue and gray pipe cleaners sticking out. A few ribbons are hanging down too.
Her makeup is just as bold.
"Iz, you're the definition of school spirit," I say laughing.
Izzy walks over and shushes me. She fluffs some of my curls and smiles.
"I'm shocked you picked this outfit out on your own."
I gasp. "How dare you say that young lady."
Izzy giggles and I shut my locker.
"Blackmail really does work," Izzy says, still giggling.
"Damn woman!" Tyler exclaims while he hugs Izzy from behind.
Turning to give them privacy I see Wyatt leaning against his locker, staring at me.
I watch his eyes run down my body. A shiver runs down my spine.
After admitting my crush out loud last night; I've been super nervous to see Wyatt.
I try to act normal and walk up to him smirking.
"Like what you see?"
Wyatt's eyes flick back up to mine and he smiles flirtatiously. "You look amazing and my jacket looks way better on you."
Nothing I say can embarrass this man.
Wyatt reaches to pull me in for a hug.
"Thanks for dressing up, Kate."
Good god, he smelled amazing, I can't even explain what he smelled like.
I blush. "I am the quarterback's girlfriend, it's kind of expected."
Wyatt chuckles and I realize how sexy it sounds.
This was going to be a long day.
When lunchtime comes I realize all my friends are busy.
The guys have a short football practice, Izzy has dance practice and Gloria has cheer practice.
I go to my truck and sit on the bed to eat my lunch.
Just Wyatt: look up!
My eyebrows scrunch up, and I glance up to see Wyatt jogging toward me.
Before I can say anything Wyatt stops in front of me and throws me over his shoulder.
"Wyatt! What are you doing?" I yell.
"All the guys on the football team are taking pictures with their girlfriends."
I sigh. "Okay, but I can walk." Deep down I didn't want him to put me down.
I know. I'm sure Tyler would blow his brains.
I feel Wyatt chuckle. "Yeah, but this is more fun."
Once we reach the football field Wyatt sets me down.
I grab his arm. "Hold on." I flick him on the forehead and walk away quickly.
"Baby, that hurt!" Wyatt yells.
I look over my shoulder and give him an innocent look.
"Finally y'all's got your butts over here," Gloria whines.
She is wearing one of Ryan's jerseys and leggings. Half of her hair is pulled into a high ponytail and the rest fell in tight ringlets over her shoulders. There are plenty of gray and blue ribbons hanging out of her ponytail.
One of the younger guys has his phone out to take pictures.
We're taking a picture together. (All the guys were standing behind their girlfriends with their arms wrapped around them.)
"We have to take silly ones now," Ryan yells.
All the couples do different poses. Gloria is giving Ryan a piggyback ride, Izzy is on Tyler's shoulders and another couple is doing the Charlie Angels pose.
I look at Wyatt. "What are we going to do?"
Wyatt grins and picks me up bridal style.
I sigh and mumble, "Show off."
I wrap one arm around Wyatt's neck and raise my other in the air.
Goodness gracious this man is going to kill me.
"Wait, now we have to put up the middle finger," Gloria says out of breath.
So we do.
All of us make serious faces and stick up our middle fingers.
Afterward, the guy airdrops everyone the pictures.
I have to say the middle finger picture is probably one of my favorite pictures. I think I'm going to make it my profile background on Facebook.
I don't see Wyatt anymore after school.
When I pull up in the driveway I see my dad's car, he's never home at this time.
Then I remember Derek's getting out of his wheelchair today.
I burst into the kitchen and see Derek standing at the counter.
I run over and wrap my arms around him.
He chuckles while returning the hug.
I pull away. "I'm so glad you're out of the wheelchair."
"Me too."
"So can you walk on your own now?"
"Short distances, but then I have to use the crutches. If I feel any pain I have to use the wheelchair." Derek says.
I forgot how tall Derek is, he is at least 6/3.
"Now you don't have any more excuses to get out of doing chores." My dad says from the table.
I look at my dad. "Wait, if you're still here then that means-"
My dad interrupts me. "Yes, I'm going to the game."
I squeal and jump up and down.
"Go get ready Gracie we're picking up Claire too."
Claire is Tyler's mom.
I run to my room and put on a white pleated skirt with built-in shorts and Wyatt's jersey.
I take my hair out and braid tiny braids throughout the curls. I wrap gray and blue ribbons around each braid.
Next, I paint the number 17 on both of my checks with face paint.
I look in my mirror and notice how big Wyatt's jersey is, so I tie it up in the back with a rubber band.
"Ready to go?" I ask, skipping down the stairs.
Dad throws his keys in the air. "Yep! Der don't forget your crutches."
"I won't Dad," Derek says dryly.
Me: My whole fam is coming to watch you play!!!
Just Wyatt: Oh good!
