Chapter 25: Your middle name is?!

Katie
I waited for Wyatt to go inside before I pulled out of his driveway.

I had so much fun today, not in a million years did I think I would enjoy a day with Wyatt.

When I park outside my house I realize I didn't want my day with Wyatt to be over.

I drop Logan off inside my house and yell to whoever's home. "I'll be at Wyatt's!"

I hear Tyler yell, "Wait, what!" I ignore him and run back to my truck.

When I get back to Wyatt's I look at myself in my rearview mirror. "I don't look too bad," I mutter to myself.

I walk to his front door and ring the doorbell.

Wyatt opens the door with a confused look.
"Kate, everything okay?"

I smile "I have nothing else to do, so I'm going to help you clean."

Before he could object, I walk past him into his house. "Katie, you don't have to," Wyatt says.

"I know but I want to." I walk over to his TV.

"Wait, you don't listen to music while you clean?"

Wyatt smiles at me with that Oscar-winning smile. Izzy words, not mine.

"No why?"

I feel my jaw drop. "Okay weirdo, let me show you what you're missing."

I turn on his TV and put it on a dance music station. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Wyatt raise his eyebrows. "So, you listen to other music?"

"I love country music, but dance is way more fun to clean too."

I work on washing dishes and Wyatt vacuums.

Once he finishes, he starts cleaning the windows in the living room.

I may or may not have stole a few glances at him while he was working. (Their kitchen and living room were all one open area.)

I'm sorry, but a grown man vacuuming is hot. No just me? Moving on.

I hum to the music while I wash the dishes till,
I wanna dance with Somebody by Whitney Houston starts playing.

"Oh Wyatt, I love this song!" I squeal bouncing on my toes. I see him shake his head.

I start dancing and moving to the song as I dry dishes.

Wyatt glances at me and the look on his face told me he thought I was crazy.

"Wooo!" I copy Whitney.

"Clock strikes upon the hour, as the sun begins to fade." I sing dramatically.

"Kate, what are you doing?" Wyatt asks with a broad look.

I huff. He interrupted my singing.

"Singing while I clean." It was pretty obvious.

I sing the chorus along with Whitney.
"Oh, I wanna dance with somebody. I wanna feel the heat with somebody."

I finish drying all the dishes. "Wyatt, this song doesn't make you want to dance?" I ask.

Wyatt just stares at me like I've lost my mind.

He needs to learn to have fun.

"I've been in love and lost all my senses spinning through the town. Sooner or later the fever ends and I wind up feeling down." I dance as dramatically as a can while I sing.

Right before the second chorus, I look at Wyatt. "Seriously nothing? No moving your hips or anything?" I ask astonished.

Tyler and Derek might be annoying as hell, but they could throw down some dance moves.

When I finally could convince them to help me clean it was basically a dance battle between the three of us. I honestly believe Tyler's dance moves are what won Izzy over.

"I can't dance," Wyatt says frowning but his eyes are shining.

I roll my eyes. "Just Wyatt, anyone can dance."
He shakes his head.

I march up to him and grab both of his hands.
"Kate, what are you doing?" Wyatt asks with his voice shaking slightly.

I answer him by pulling his arms to the music.

"See you can dance." I glance up at him to find him staring at me with a huge grin.

Wyatt does something that shocks me.

"So when the night falls my lonely heart calls!"
Wyatt sings, trying to hit the high note as Whitney does.

I place my head against his chest from laughing so hard.

Wyatt simply grabs me and pulls me around the room dancing.

We dance and spin each other around like two idiots.

When the song ends Wyatt has a hand on my waist catching me from a spin. I place both hands on his chest to steady myself.

"See Wyatt, you can dance," I say out of breath.

His eyes are staring into mine passionately.
"It helps when you have a good partner."

We continue cleaning and singing.

I grab a tote of folded clothes from Wyatt.
"Place these on the top of the steps."

After I set the clothes down I stop and look at a desk that's covered in medals and trophies.

The one that caught my eye is a trophy that had a picture of a younger Wyatt holding a football. On the trophy stand was his name.

Wyatt Muriel Kent.

Muriel was his middle name. Oh My Gosh!

I run down the stairs and into the living room.
"Your middle name is Muriel!"

Wyatt's whole body freezes.

I feel myself evil grinning. "No wonder you don't tell anyone," I say, with a teasing tone.

He turns around with a terrified look. "Please Kate, don't tell anyone."

I pout. "Aww, why not?"

He sighs in aggravation. "Because I will never hear the end of it."

My evil grin is back in place. "You know what,
I think I might text the group chat now. Derek would love to know about this."

I place a finger on my chin. "I'm pretty sure he's still friends with some of the players on the football team."

Wyatt walks toward me with his hands together pleading. "Kate, please you don't want to do this."

I narrow my eyes smiling. "What are you going to do about it?"

He raises his eyebrows accepting the challenge.

"You don't have the guts," I whisper.

Wyatt bolts toward me but I jump to the side.
He chases me around the house cornering me in the kitchen.

"Nowhere to go, Kate," Wyatt says.

I smile, taunting him. "What are you gonna do, Kent?"

He grins like a freaking villain and jumps toward me. I try to run but he grabs my waist, I squeal because it tickles.

I squirm to get away but he starts ticking me.

"Promise you won't tell anyone, Kate,"
Wyatt says in between laughter.

"Okay, I won't tell anyone unless you give me a reason to."

Wyatt stops ticking me. "What?"

I knew that would distract him, I use it as my chance to get away.

He pins me against the counter placing a hand on both sides of me.

"Kate, what?" Wyatt demands seriously but his eyes give him away.

I cross my arms like a sassy five-year-old.
"I won't tell anyone unless you piss me off."

He frowns but his eyes are practically dancing.
"So you're going to hold this over my head?"

I slowly nod my head. "Yep." I would never tell anyone, but it's fun to mess with him.

Wyatt leans closer to me his breath tickling my forehead. "Is there any way I can change your mind?"

I suddenly find it very hard to breathe. I just shake my head unable to talk.

I see something change in Wyatt's eyes. They suddenly get darker, like those freaking vampires in Twilight.

Yes, I'm team Jacob, Izzy gets so mad at me because she's a die-hard Edward fan.

Not!

The!

Time!

Katie!

Sometime between Wyatt leaning closer to me and the Vampire eyes crap, my arms came uncrossed and are now resting on his chest.
That I realize is moving up and down very fast.
It seems like I'm not the only one out of breath.

We are so close that if I so much as tilted my head forward are lips would touch.

Just thinking about that sends a shiver down my back.

I stare into his eyes; they are beautiful.
They're brown with little flecks of gold and around his pupil is a line of green.

I notice Wyatt's gaze go from my eyes to my lips. He's going to kiss me.

"Wy, who's car is in the driveway?" The front door slams shut.

Wyatt jumps away from me and I turn away from him.

Wyatt's mom walks into the kitchen. I glance over at Wyatt; his ears are bright red.
Lucky, I could feel my whole body burning.

"I'm sorry Mrs.Kent it's my car. I was helping Wyatt." My voice cracks at the end.

She sets her purse on the counter. "Oh honey, I don't care, and for the last time call me Margret."

She must have not seen us. That would be embarrassing.

I look at Wyatt and smile. "I should get going."

Margret shakes her head. "No please stay for dinner honey."

Yeah, that's the last thing I want to do. I fear if I stay here much longer my body might permanently stay red.

"I would love to, but I really need to get home." And away from Wyatt.

Margret smiles. "It was nice seeing you Katie, you're welcome here any time."

She looks at Wyatt with a look that I couldn't place, from not knowing her that well.

"I'm going to take a shower. After you walk Katie to her car order some pizza." Margret tells Wyatt.

"Okay, Mom," Wyatt says weirdly.

Something is going on between them and I had no idea what.

I grab my phone and keys from their table and walk to the door.

Once I'm outside Wyatt finally talks. "I'm sorry about my mom she can be a bit...forward."

What, forward? Okay, maybe a little. I loved his mom she's funny and sweet. Unlike a lot of moms, I know.

"Don't worry Wyatt, it's fine." I smile hoping he'll believe me.

I unlock my truck and turn around to say bye but Wyatt hugs me.

"Thank you for today Katie, I had fun."

I giggle into his chest. "Me too!"

When I pull into my driveway it finally clicks.
I almost kissed Wyatt!

Wyatt the most popular guy at school, my fake boyfriend and friend!

Holy shit!

Wyatt
After Katie leaves, I walk back inside and sit down at the table.

I almost kissed Katie.

Katie as in my fake girlfriend, friend, probably best friend!

Holy crap!!

I wanted to kiss her. Crap, crap, crap!

I close my eyes and I'm welcomed with a picture of Katie staring up at me with those big green eyes. Stupid memory!

What does this mean?

I don't have feelings for her. Correction I can't have feeling for her.

Because at the end day, she doesn't and won't ever feel the same.

My mom comes downstairs with her hair wrapped up in a towel, interrupting my thoughts.

She silently walks to the phone hanging on the wall and calls Papa Johns's.

When she hangs up I'm about to apologize but she stops me.

"It's okay, Wy."

She opens the fridge. "How is your 'just a friend' Katie doing?" The air quotes she used hurt.

"She's good." Not wanting to say too much.

Mom slams shut the door to the fridge and turn around to me. "Cut the crap, Wyatt!
I've seen that face one too many times on a certain someone."

I smirk. "I don't know what you're talking about?"

She glares at me. I know I'm about to get a lecture. "Wyatt you are a cardboard cut out of your father. You both make the same faces."

I tilt my head to the side. "I really don't know what you're talking about?"

She smiles. She knows I'm messing. "You know it took your father five months to tell me he liked me?"

My mom and dad met in college. They had the same history class together and on the first day, my mom spilled tea all over my dad. After that, they became really good friends. Evidently, it took my dad five months to finally tell my mom he liked her.

I take a deep breath. "And you're saying all this because?"

She sighs and looks at the ceiling. "You've known Katie for a week now right?"

I nod.

"I can tell a difference. You're happier than you have been in months."

I stop her before she could continue.

"Yeah, but that doesn't mean I like her."

"Wyatt, Im not dumb I saw y'all through the front door." My mom deadpans.

I feel my jaw drop. "Then why did you come in," I yell.

My mom has the audacity to smirk at me.

"I gave you at least three minutes to make your move, I couldn't wait forever. You had your shot buddy."

I laugh, my mom is ruthless.

"Even if I didn't see y'all, your faces when I walked in gave it away."

I stand up to go to my room not wanting to be any more embarrassed.

"I don't like her, okay?" I say over my shoulder going upstairs.

"We were just caught up in the moment."

"Bull Crap!" My mom sings from downstairs.

I don't like Katie. I was just caught up in the moment. We were having fun dancing and laughing.

Yeah, definitely the moment. Right?

The heat 🥵

Don't be scared to comment!! I love reading them all!
