Chapter 20: Home of the whopper
Wyatt
Seeing Katie wear my jersey made me so happy. Then seeing her and my mom in the stands cheering me on; I didn't even care if we won. (Which we did)
After the game in the locker room, Ryan hits me on the back and asks, "Was that your girl cheering us on?"
I smile. "Yeah, that was her yelling."
Katie and my mom were yelling so loud that you could hear them from the field. I'm pretty sure I heard Izzy tell some woman to pull a stick out of her ass.
Ryan smiles. "Wyatt, your one lucky man." I just scoff. It did feel pretty nice having people yelling and cheering for you.
When I'm leaving the locker room Stacy stops me. Crap!
"Good game, Wy." She purrs like a freaking cat. What guy finds that hot?
I try my best not to look at her. "Yeah, it was."
She steps closer to me and places her hand on my shoulder. She had on way too much perfume.
I push her away and ask sternly, "What are you doing Stacy?"
She crosses her arms. "Don't play stupid Wy, I know you don't like her, I know you."
I step around her. "Well, you're wrong, I do like her, a lot. So leave me alone. I'm going to see my girlfriend."
That shuts her up.
When I walk to the parking lot I see Katie talking with my mom. I figured they would get along.
Katie looks so cute in my jersey, it's so big on her that she tucked part of the front into her shorts. No girl has ever worn my jersey and I don't think I want any girl after Katie too.
As soon as she sees me she smiles, it takes everything in me not to run and pick her up as you see in movies.
"Wy, you did so well!" My mom says as she hugs me.
"I'm so sorry, but I have to go, I'll see you at home okay?" I just nod my head.
It sucked that my mom had to leave, but I know she didn't want to. She stayed longer than she should have just to see me after the game.
My mom turns and jogs away. "It was nice meeting you, Katie!" She yells over her shoulder.
"It was nice meeting you too!" Katie yells back.
You know what screw it! I pick Katie up by her waist and spin her around.
"Wyatt!" She squeals.
I put her down laughing and hug her as tight as I can.
She's giggling as she says, "You played really well!"
She's the perfect height so when I hug her I can nuzzle my head into her neck.
"I could hear you cheering from the field."
I mumble into her hair, which smelled way too good.
"Really?" She gasps.
I pull away so I can see her face. "Yes. But I don't mind." Her cheeks turn pink after I say that. I can tell she's trying to play it off by looking down and tucking her hair behind her ears.
"Come on," I say as I sling my arm around her shoulders.
"I love your mom, she's the best."
Katie says from my side.
I laugh. "The feelings mutual because she texted me twenty minutes into the game saying, 'Katie's a keeper'."
"Awe, really?"
"Have you told her about tomorrow?"
Katie asks as I unlock my car.
I have my riding lesson with Katie tomorrow.
"No, I'm going to tell her tonight."
Katie opens my trunk. "Ahh okay."
I throw my football bag in and shut it.
I walk to the passenger side door and open it.
"Wyatt, you don't have to do that, I have hands you know," Katie says coldly.
I smirk. "Well, you're not going to like what I'm about to do then."
I pick her up bridal style and she yelps.
I sit her down in the car seat and she shakes her head laughing. "You're crazy! I think you've hit your head too much."
"Do I need to buckle you in as well?" I say like I'm talking to a child. Katie responds by giving me the finger.
I start the car. "Okay, where are we eating?"
She shrugs her shoulders. "I don't know, Kent."
I turn my blinker on to pull out of the parking lot.
"I'm going to ask one more time and if you don't answer, I'm going to tickle an answer out of you."
She dramatically sighs. "Bossy much?"
"How about Home of the Whopper?"
I glance at her to see her smiling. "Burger King?"
She rolls her eyes. "Duh."
We go through the drive-thru to order our food.
After we acquire said food, I park the car so we can eat but Katie has already started unwrapping her whopper.
"Oh come on, I said no pickles." Her nose is scrunched up as she picks the pickles off her sandwich.
I shake my bag of chicken nuggets. "That's why I get these."
She sticks her tongue out at me before she eats one of her pickles covered in mayonnaise.
I feel my eyes widen. "Wait, if you like pickles then why do you get a plain whopper?" Hold on I'm sorry a plain whopper with just mayo and cheese.
She looks at me like that is the dumbest thing anyone has ever said. "I like pickles by their selves just not on a sandwich."
I act like I understand. "Oh okay, weirdo."
"I am not!" She's cute when she's mad.
All of a sudden she reaches over and takes one of my nuggets. I dramatically gasp like an old lady at church when they hear someone cuss.
She just giggles and eats it while I narrow my eyes. "How dare you."
She gives me an innocent look. "You want one of my pickles?"
I eat my last nugget. "No, I'm good."
Katie
Wyatt and I talked and laughed the whole way home. It seemed so easy being with him. It felt like I was with an old friend.
Normally I'm not very open with new people, but with Wyatt, he had this way of making me feel safe.
I even stole one of his chicken nuggets while we were eating, I don't know why I did it, but he didn't care. Derek normally yells at me when I do that to him.
When we pull up to my house I don't want to get out. I don't think Wyatt wants me to either.
"It was nice having you there tonight, Kate."
I smile at him in the darkness. "I had fun."
I really did. That was the most fun I've had in a while.
Wyatt looks down at his hands. "Before my dad died both of my parents would go to every one of my games."
I place my hand over his and he looks up at me.
"Last year my mom only came to three of my games because she had to work."
"I'm so sorry, Wyatt."
I couldn't imagine not having someone there to cheer me on. Even after my mom died my dad still came to every one of my horse shows.
"Wyatt, even when we're not 'together' anymore I'll still be there cheering you on." Even in the darkest, I see him smile.
"Katie, how did your mom die?" Wyatt asks cautiously.
I take a deep breath. It's been a while since I talked about my mom's death.
"She started feeling tired and sick all the time so my dad made her go to the doctor. They diagnosed her with stage four stomach cancer. She lived five more months."
Wyatt reaches over and wipes a tear I didn't realize had fallen. "Kate, I'm so sorry."
When he says that I feel my walls start to crumble. I never let myself feel this vulnerable with people. Somehow I feel safe with Wyatt.
"Yeah, I'm sorry too, Wyatt."
He looks out the windshield. "Losing parents sucks."
I chuckle at his comment. "It does."
Wyatt places his hands on my shoulders. "Katie, can you promise me something?"
"Yeah," I say softly.
"No matter what happens after the next four weeks promise me we'll stay friends."
"I promise." Little did he know how much he affected me. I've known him for not even a week and I felt safe around him.
I have a feeling we're going to become good friends.
I hope this chapter gave you the feels! 😍
