(8) Purple

3rd person P.O.V

If Nick had to point out his favourite feature, it would be Judy's eyes.

As well as them being so big that they held all curiosity of the universe, they were a supernatural shade of purple.

Nick had always wanted to know more about them. Why they shined, why did he melt when he saw them or why they were purple in general?

Judy didn't really like them. She always found them to obvious or found that they always stood out.

Purple wasn't a normal eye colour.

But Nick loved them, the passion they were filled with and the sparkly reflection they obtained.

They were so unique that no other animal had them in all of Zootopia, Nick would have noticed if there was.

But Judy hated them. She called them a "genetic disorder" that should be corrected.

She always thought that if she hated them, surely Nick thought they were weird.

Nick had always spoken about getting contact lenses to hide the natural eye colour. He explained that it was a "fun dress up for eyes".

Judy honestly wanted a pair of them, brown ones, like her parents.

So the first chance she got, she bought a pair. Admittedly, they didn't really help with her sight, she had all the carrot she wanted to help her with that.

They were just chocolate brown, and very expensive much to Judy's displeasure.

Either way, she practised placing them in and admiring herself in the mirror. No longer did she have the "freaky purple eyes".

And yet she felt something off about her. Nick had called her later on during the day to ask her to go to a cafe with him.

Perhaps she was worried about Nick's first impression? Ignoring the crazy feeling she still felt, she left the apartment for the destined cafe Nick had suggested.

Judy had quickly noticed that no animal was staring at her now for there was nothing to stare at.

She turned around a corner and spotted Nick sitting down at a table.

Quickly, she hopped over and covered his eyes with her paws. "Quick! Guess who!" She exclaimed in a sing song voice.

"Hey Carrots!" Nick exclaimed as Judy removed her paws nervously.

The first thing Nick expected to see and find missing was the purple accents and shades.

He blinked quickly in shock before speaking. "Carrots... Are you wearing contacts?" He asked.

Judy nodded her head viciously. "I know! I bought a pair after you mentioned that they kinda changed the colour of your eyes! You should have said they were expensive though!" She joked, nudging him.

"Why would you change the colour of your eyes?" Nick asked.

Judy smiled lightly. "Does it look bad?" She worried.

"Nah, brown is a nice colour but in all honesty... It looks a little..." Nick droned out.

"A little?" Judy persisted him to continue, playing with around her paws.

"Well... No offence but boring..." Nick explained. Judy stared at him. She would think he'd say different or new but boring?

"Boring?" She stated flatly.

"No! It's just... I like your natural eye colour." Nick insisted.

"Oh." Judy muttered, her ears drooping. "I didn't really like purple."

Nick raised a brow. "Really? Why not?"

"It's strange." Judy answered, "animals give me weird looks and it's literally just a genetic mutation!" She exclaimed.

"Is that all? I actually liked the purple, it was cool and unique!" Nick said.

"You like my natural eye colour?" Judy asked surprised. Though the topic was strange, Judy didn't feel the strange "off" feeling anymore.

"Sure! I always wondered why they were like that, I think they make you look cute- adorable, adorable..." Nick said hastily. "They make you look adorable... For a rabbit."

Judy folded her arms. "It's just a genetic mutation." She explained.

"So you've said for a while now, do you know what kind?" Nick asked.

Judy nodded. "Alexandria Genesis." Nick's eyes widened.

"Alexandria's Genesis?!" He repeated in awe.

Judy nodded as she played around with the sugar packets that were placed in a small cup on the table.

She finally sat down and looked at everything but Nick.

He placed his paws on the table as he spoke up. "I didn't think Alexandria's Genesis existed!" He said astounded.

"Well why else do I have freaky purple eyes?" Judy rolled her eyes. Nick however frowned at her choice of descriptive words.

"Freaky? Who said they are freaky?" Nick asked her.

"Um me?" She blanched.

"I think they are cool!" Nick insisted.

"I dunno, I just feel so self conscious about them." She said, rubbing her arm. Nick shrugged.

"I guess you just don't see what I usually see." He smirked.

"Are you attempting at flirting with me?" Judy raised a brow. Nick raised his arms up in defence.

"I'm just stating the obvious Carrots." He said.

"Uh huh..." Judy sighed, swinging her feet under her very large chair.

Nick stared at her contact lenses. They didn't have the usual shine her eyes had.

They didn't have as much curiosity in them and they certainly didn't look unique.

They were just like any pair of eyes Nick had seen. He could even say his eyes were more interesting than hers.

He didn't tell Judy his true thoughts however, only smiling and finally agreeing with her before they parted ways.

The next day just made Nick regret his decision in agreeing with her.

Every police officer at work noticed the sudden change to Judy. She had come in with the brown contacts in place, covering the abnormal nature.

Chief Bogo addressed the new information in roll call, only to claim he "don't care" about it.

Judy was only bombarded by every co worker, asking why she had decided to hide her "special features."

Judy didn't bother answering and had just left them clueless.

By now Nick had enough of it. The fact that Judy felt so uncomfortable to hide her true self made him upset.

She had declared she was going to the bathroom to freshen up when she took the contacts out.

Nick watched, slightly disgusted, as she removed the circle coloured plastic and placed them in the salty water that filled it's case.

He didn't need to see her prod at her eyeballs even though he had been watching her do it for about ten minutes, once was enough.

She had exited the office by then, leaving the fox with the case of contact lenses.

Quickly, he took the case and slipped it into his pocket. True his actions were probably selfish but Judy would be grateful later.

Judy only returned to find her contacts missing. She only got angry when Nick revealed he "hid" them somewhere she wouldn't find.

He almost felt guilty- almost.

They had both exited the ZPD at the end of their work shift to see animals encouraging Judy to forget the contacts. Most of them relieved that Judy was "over that phase."

Judy just frowned. "I don't get it... " she muttered, "why do they like my purple eyes?"

"They are cool Carrots, they are unique, how can't you love em?" Nick asked. Judy opened her mouth to answer, only to find Nick give her the small box with the brown contacts.

"I was just trying to show you that you shouldn't be scared to show your real self." Nick muttered. "I guess my little experiment failed but if you really feel this insecure..."

Judy looked at the little box.

Why were they getting so worked up over something so useless?  They had literally been talking about her eye COLOUR for the past couple of days!

What did it matter anyways?

It was stupid, a waste of energy in general!

Judy looked at the brown contacts swimming in the container. "Perhaps I never needed these after all." She spoke up, "I mean, what a stupid topic that has gotten the whole police force worked up!" She laughed lightly.

"Well, some of us got worried that you started to... You know..." Nick said.

"To what? Hate my own body image?" She asked. Nick nodded.

"We thought that eye colour was just the beginning."

Judy only frowned. "I see..." She muttered. They walked down the road as Judy threw the plastic box.

Nick watched in amazement at the perfect throw Judy had casted, the box sailed through the air before landing straight in the trash can.

"Woah! Carrots! Money value! Those things cost hundreds of bucks!" Nick exclaimed in horror.

Judy shrugged. "I know but money doesn't buy me security in myself." She said.

Nick looked at her as she smirked. "It's just an eye colour Nick, nothing to important." She said.

Nick stared into her purple eyes, of course the topic at hand had been pretty ridiculous but deep down a lesson was learnt.

Accept yourself first before you change yourself second.
