(15) Savage for Nothing

3rd person P.O.V

Judy and Nick smiled. "So you're Jack Savage." Nick stated.

"Yup! Jack Savage, ZPD detective." The rabbit exclaimed, shaking paws with the partners.

"Oh it's so amazing to finally have another bunny in the crew!" Judy cheered.

"You're the Judy Hopps everyone speaks of correct? And I assume you're her partner Nick Wilde, you to are both highly praised." Jack nodded.

Judy's eyes lit up as she grabbed Nick's arm. "Did ya hear that Nick?! HE KNOWS US!!!" She cheered. Nick rubbed the back of his neck.

Jack was a new recruit for the ZPD. He was a detective who usually worked solo but finally decided to join after hearing about Judy and Nick- especially Judy.

He was slightly taller than her but not as tall as Nick, making him look defenceless but Nick knew well that it was all part of the act.

Today they decided to introduce themselves after much of Judy's insisting. To Nick, it felt like hours when it was just a few minutes.

5 minutes and he already didn't like the guy.

Why?

Cause he was a rabbit.

Like Judy.

And everyone knows what happens when a bunny works with a bunny.

The very thing that a fox and a bunny can't have in a relationship; love.

Oh it made his blood boil but perhaps seeing Judy's excitement made it all worth it.

"Heard you loud and clear Carrots." Nick lazily smiled.

Jack looked at Nick quizzically. "Carrots?" He questioned.

"Oh that's Nick's nickname for me!... Well one of them... He gives me so many even he can't remember!" Judy laughed, bouncing up and down.

"So I see." Jack replied, eyeing Nick. Nick returned a warm smile while deep down his inner instinct was telling him to kill.

"So Judy, I happen to own a convertible, if you want we could go out and you could show me around, I'm still fairly new to the city." Judy's ears perked up.

"That sounds so awesome!!!" She squeezed her friends paw. Nick could feel the jealousy burn him up. "But-" she said.

Nick looked at her hopefully. "But Nick and I usually go on patrol..." She mumbled. Nick's ears drooped.

She obviously didn't want to go on patrol with HIM. She wanted JACK. "You can go patrol with Jack while showing him around Cottontail, I'll finish up the paperwork Kay?" He said in remorse.

Judy's eyes lit up. "Really?! You're okay with that?!" Nick smiled at her excited face.

"Yeah Sure, anything for you, I'll be in the office." Judy let go of Nick's paw and practically dragged the detective off.

If Judy turned back at all, she would have seen Nick slap himself in the face and kick the ground but she didn't.

"Ugh... Hey Clawhauser, any cases need cracking?" He groaned.

"Not really Nick, get dumped by Judy?" Nick jumped at his comment.

"Dumped? We we're never together man!" Nick exclaimed.

"But you wish you were." Clawhauser stated. Nick paused.

"And you know this how?" He asked.

"Observation, but mainly cause I'm the love expert." He replied.

Nick rolled his eyes, "Nobody calls you that."

"I know! But i'm never wrong! So, Jack's your rival huh?" The cheetah wiggles his eyebrows.

Nick groaned, "Yeah." At this, Ben squealed like a girl.

"I knew it! I knew you liked her!" Nick hushed him.

"Clawhauser, shhhh!!...BEN BE QUIET!" Nick snapped. Ben giggled.

"Got any plans to ask Judy out?" Nick frowned at his friend's comment.

"Plan?"

"Oh sure! You have to ask her out!" Ben replied as if it were nothing.

"Ask her out? Are you nuts?!" Nick whisper yelled.

"It's either you do or you don't but Savage is gonna get to her if you don't." He shrugged.

"Maybe another time." Nick insisted.

"No today." Ben stated, popping a donut in his mouth, "if you don't, you'll miss the chance."

Nick sighed. For once, Ben was right. "But I'm a fox." Nick explained.

"So?" Ben asked.

"So?!" Nick burst out, "I'm a fox! She's a bunny! My competition is a fricken bunny too! I've lost my chances because -"

"Because what? You're a fox?" Ben guessed.

"EXACTLY!" Nick outstretched his arms.

"Nick." Ben said slowly, "What difference does it make?" Nick frowned.

"I- Judy likes Savage, I haven't seen her happier than before. They were made for each other and she wouldn't like me in the way I like her...why does Savage have to like her?!" Nick slammed his balled up paws onto the table.

Ben smiled. "Ah, that's where you're wrong Nick." He said. Nick rose a brow. "The question isn't why Jack has to like her, it's DOES he like her?" Nick paused to process the information.

"He does." He said sternly. "I could see it by the way he looked at her, he's got her under his finger cause he praises her..." Ben frowned.

"Are you certain?" Ben asked.

"Yes. He does." Nick confirmed. "Ugh why does Judy even like him?!"

"Like I said before, the question isn't why does Judy like him?, Nick, it's about perspective, the real question is DOES she like him? Get the answer to that and you get the answer to everything!

"I guess, look it doesn't matter, I better get to work." With that, Nick stormed off, leaving an empathetic Ben behind.

Judy was having to much fun to notice Nick's absence although something clearly bothered her.

"And here we have- oh my the place I met Nick!" Judy squealed, looking up at the giant ice cream shop.

"Really eh? You to close?" Jack asked nonchalantly. Judy nodded her head.

"Oh yes, I was the one who offered him to be my partner after all!" She stifled a laugh.

The feeling in her chest which had constricted around her lungs slowly dispersed, leaving Judy to forget the weird feeling from before.

"Are you two a thing?" Jack asked hopefully.

"Well uh... Not really." Judy grinned sheepishly. Jack smiled.

"So you're single?" He asked. Judy's eyes widened as she realised where this was heading.

"Yeah but I'm not looking for anyone, how bout you?" She quickly turned the subject onto him, a trick Nick taught her.

"Um yeah kind of, not sure... " he stated rather awkwardly. They continued to drive around the place until they arrived back at the ZPD.

"Hello Ben, is Nick in the office?" Judy called, following Jack in.

"Uh actually no, he left two hours ago, why?" He asked. Judy raised a brow.

"Two hours ago? Did he do the paperwork?" She inquired.

"Yep!" Ben held up the stacks of paper for her to see.

"No way." Judy shook her head. "That isn't possible! He lacks so much that I have to push him to do it! Why is he so organised all of a sudden... Two hours organised!?" Judy fretted.

"Calm down Carrots," Jack smirked, "he probably went home or something." Judy nodded.

"I guess you're right." She agreed, standing up and turning around. She gasped when she saw Nick's figure at the front entrance.

"Hello Whiskers, Jack." He greeted.

"You finished the work!" Judy squealed.

"Right you are!" Nick smiled, "I'll be leaving early Clawhauser." Judy felt the constriction in her lungs again.
"Leave early? But we always walk home together since you live so close by..." Judy pointed out.

"Well you can walk with Sava-Jack." Nick corrected himself quickly.

"Um Nick, if I may point out, if you usually walk with Judy why make a mess of everything and change plans?" Jack asked.

Ben hid behind his computer and watched the fight play out.

"Make a mess?! I'm only being kind to let you guys spend quality time together!" Nick argued.

"Nick- Jack- guys!" Judy called as Jack backed up.

"Keep up the act Nick, I dare you! Perhaps your true self will be unleashed!" Jack began to taunt Nick.

"I'm sorry but I don't recall ordering a bunny to hit on my partner." Nick spat back.

"Jack wasn't hitting on me! Right Jack!?" Judy insisted.

"So what if I was?!" Jack retorted.

"You were?!"

"And you can't do anything about it even if you like her to!" He said.

"You like me?!"

"Who cares if I like Judy or not, your rude and a horrible person, I'm out." Nick turned on his heel as he heard Jack fuss over Judy, making sure that "Nick didn't scare her."

"He wouldn't scare me!" Judy insisted, causing Nick to pause, "he's my friend!" Nick turned around.

"Thanks Carrots but I better be going, Jack can walk with you." Judy felt upset as she watched the fox head for the door.

Jack rolled his eyes before calling: "you could never be with her anyways, your a fox!"

Nick began to make his way back to them, fury in his eyes. He had had enough. "Okay I love her! Happy!? You win anyways, I get it! I know it wouldn't happen because you exist and your a bunny, which also happens to be the same species Judy is! I knew from the beginning I would lose but I only fought because I just don't want her to end up with a jerk like you! But it's her call, if she wants you, I don't blame her..." Nicks voice grew softer, only to realise Jack had a grin plastered to his face.

"Nick." Judy muttered. She stepped forwards and surprisingly hugged Nick, causing Jack to frown. "I never knew you felt this way before..."

Jack clenched the item in his pocket. He quickly pulled it out and jumped onto Nick, pulling Judy away.

"Hey! JACK! STOP IT!" Judy called, watching as the two fought. Her gaze widened when she noticed the muzzle in his paw.

By now, Ben had called security as Judy struggled to pull Jack away. A clicking sound was heard as Nick yelled.

Judy could only glare at Jack as she ran to Nick who had a muzzle secured in place.

Fear and panic washed over Nick's face as he remembered the first time he got muzzled.

"I'm surprised they haven't muzzled you yet Wilde, they should since your a predator that eats prey."

"You're insane." Judy called, jumping onto Jack as Nick struggled to pull the device off.

"They don't call me Jack Savage for nothing!" He yelled, only to quieten down when Chief Bogo entered the room.

It didn't take log for him to figure out what had happened and instantly helped Nick out.

Jack was left to follow Bogo down to the interrogation rooms. "Nick are you okay?! I'm so sorry about all this! I had no clue he was a mad rabbit!" She exclaimed.

"It's all okay Carrots." Nick sighed, resting his head on his paw.

"Is it true?" Judy slowly asked as Nick looked at her, "is it true you like me?" Deep down she was dying for a yes but didn't know if it was.

Perhaps it had been a lie or trick of Jack's? "Yeah... yeah I do." He admitted, sighing slightly.

He tensed up when he felt her head rest against his shoulder, her ear brushing against his cheek.

"Well I do to." she concluded, causing him to jump.

"Really?" He asked.

"Yeah... I do."
