Chapter 6: Meloetta's Song of Togetherness

Haru spent her Sunday morning humming along to the tune of her idol's voice in her mind. Meloetta. The wonderful Psychic and Normal-Type was well-known in every Continent, especially on the Sand Continent where each of her songs have been constantly played.

Besides Relic Song, Haru's favorite one was a song of friendship; The Song of Togetherness. "I'll have to get Hikaru into it later," she reminded herself.

"Hey!" She found him waiting for her by the lake, impatiently nibbling his tail.

"Finally!" He stopped to look at her, the irritation fading into a look of friendship. "I hate having' to wait."

"Well, the wait is over!" Haru put a paw in front of her mouth to keep herself from giggling. Now that she and Hikaru were truly friends, he stopped trying to hide his accent. Even though she had heard it several times, it was still cute to hear.

  "Anyway, where's Kirlia?"

"She said her head hurt, but she'll be at school tomorrow." It seemed that ever since Kirlia became Kirlia, she and Haru spent less time together. Maybe Kirlia had developed more adult tastes since her evolution and didn't want to spend time with a kid.

No, Haru thought with a shake of her head. She was just being paranoid. "You ready to explore?"

Hikaru nodded, his tail wagging with excitement. "You lead the way!"

Haru gladly walked in front of him as they walked fearlessly into the forest dungeon, ready to see what it had to offer. However, lurking nearby was a Pokemon both of them were entirely unaware of, intent on ruining their fun.

"Those two think they own the whole world ever since we were in Sahra Town!" The bitter Pokemon growled to herself."Not if I can help it!" With that the floating Pokemon wandered into the dungeon in silence, always several steps behind Haru and Hikaru.

"I love these dungeons," Haru, still oblivious, called to Hikaru over the sound of Pelipper's loud wings flapping in the sky.

"Because they always change every time you enter them?"

"Yep!" Hikaru's guess was spot on! Different items and different layouts always awaited whoever stepped into a dungeon, even if they'd been there a hundred times before.

"Where do you want to go now?" They had been walking for a while, and Haru's paws were starting to ache. She was relieved when Hikaru asked to take a quick break.

"So did you hear?" Hikaru asked as Haru began licking the pads of her paws.

  "What?"

"The field trip to the Mist Continent."

"Of course!" How could she not? She was always on top of anything special happening. In the village, at least. That was the one downside of living in Dance Village; News there was yesterday's talk somewhere else.

"Wait a minute." Haru blinked as Hikaru leapt from his spot, his tail bristling and his eyes round with alert.

Haru looked around to see what could have startled her friend, but there was nothing but grass and trees near her. Hikaru began walking towards a bush, his eyes lit up.

Haru was surprised to see the bush rustle, which was also the cheesiest sign that someone was eavesdropping nearby. Sure enough the most annoying Pokemon she knew emerged, looking as if Haru and Hikaru were the guilty ones.

"Found you!" Floette pointed her flower at them accusingly, causing Hikaru to sit back on his haunches, the irritation quickly replacing the light in his purple eyes.

"More like you were found." He rolled his eyes at her, and Haru's joy escaped her, a burning sensation taking its place. Some of it was fury that made her want to chase the intruding Fairy-Type away with Flamethrower, but the other part was pity.

She was sure Floette didn't really have any friends. She knew for a fact that the group she performed with were there only because Florges, the elegant yet bitter secondary leader of the Fairy-Type division, ordered her daughter to recruit them. Swirlix and Spritzee probably couldn't stand their leader, despite being a part of the same performing troupe.

"Why are you even here?"Hikaru seemed to feel no sympathy for Floette at all, and was instead infuriated by her presence. " Are you that shallow?"

Floette rolled her own eyes, and it was obvious she wouldn't display anything other than stubbornness and a sense of self-righteousness. "Why are you two here? It's against the rules for children to be in a dangerous dungeon without an adult."

She got closer, pointing her flower in Hikaru's face. He smacked it with a paw when she dared to touch his nose. "You're one to talk!" Haru knew Hikaru was concealing his accent again. Xerneas knows just how much Floette would prattle on about it if she ever heard it.

"Let's just leave."Haru was somewhat impressed by Floette's persistence, though. They were deep in the dungeon, and going back would take a lot of navigating to get through all the twists and turns.

"See if I care!" Floette scoffed."I'll tell on you both before you even head back!"

"Do it, then." Hikaru didn't seem as angry anymore. He was sitting waiting for Floette to leave on her own.

"I don't take orders from the likes of you!" That did it.

Hikaru got to his paws to walk forward, causing Floette to shrink back. "Look here, Fairy, there's one thing you need to know about life and that is the fact that you're no better than me or her."

  "Ha! That's what you think."

Hikaru sighed and shook his head." That's what I know. You must be dense or something. "

Before Floette could give a sharp comeback Haru stepped in, her paws twitching with impatience. "Just go home, okay? Our parents are probably staring to worry."

Haru noticed Floette clutch her flower stem even harder."Don't tell me what to do."

Haru rolled her eyes as she walked up to Hikaru."Then let the two of us leave."

As they began to walk past Floette she sprung herself back in front of them to block their way out. "Hold it!"

Hikaru kept walking anyway, ignoring everything she had to say. He didn't even fear her constant threat of telling in the two of them."Then do it,"he challenged.

Haru wasn't sure if she even knew the way out. Since it was a dungeon the layout for each floor would be different, so if they tried to backtrack to get home, they'd have to explore just to do it.

   "We got a problem, guys."

  "What?" Floette growled.

"It won't be that easy to get home." Usually Haru brought something like berry bits with her to sprinkle on the ground whenever she went into a dungeon so she'd be able to head back easily, but this dungeon was longer and she had no bits to bring.

"Let's find a way, then." Hikaru took the lead, leaving Haru to walk next to Floette, who as stubborn as she was still wanted to stick together.

The dungeon floor was getting darker, making it more difficult to navigate. Before any recognizable progress was even made, the group found themselves lost in near complete darkness.

"This has to be your fault." At first Haru thought that Hikaru was blaming her, only to see him whirl around to glare at Floette.

"You two went into the dungeon!" she sharply retorted."If anything it's all your fault."

Would they ever stop arguing?"Fine. We can leave you to go by yourself if it's our fault."Hikaru picked up the pace to get away from the Fairy-Type, making Haru pad after him.

She glanced over her shoulder to see a petrified Floette staring after them, fear bright in her gray eyes. Haru stopped with a sigh and motioned for her enemy to stay close with a wave of her tail. Floette didn't reply as she obeyed, and Hikaru looked back with fury.

"Hurry up," he muttered as he looked back at the path ahead. However, with nothing to light the way they all walked in perpetual darkness. Floette wouldn't stop shaking, and Hikaru seemed to angry to be nervous. Haru, though, was perfectly fine.

"This doesn't bother you?" Floette asked.

"No, but I'm surprised it bothers you," she responded. "Fairy-Types shouldn't be afraid of the dark." Especially since they were powerful against Dark-Type Pokemon.

"That doesn't mean anything!" Floette floated in closer, then moved away, only to sit on Haru's tail.

Haru didn't mind, since Floette only weighed a few pounds at the most. "Oh yeah! I could light the way with my fire!" She had forgotten all about that option.

"Then why didn't you?" Hikaru hissed.

"You idiot!" Floette quickly got up and whacked Haru with her flower, which didn't do much but make her face slightly itchy.

Haru summoned a ball of fire from her mouth, and thanks to all her performance practice she was able to maintain it that way. An orange glow lit up the area, giving Haru great pride about her skill.

"Good. It was cold." She walked next to Hikaru with Floette on her other side.

"So, Hikaru, why not use Flash?"

  "Didn't I tell you already? I can't use it."

"Why not?" Knowing the meaning of his name she was sure he should have been able to use a move that shone or lit up at least.

Hikaru seemed a bit embarrassed as he gave the reason, looking away with his face getting red."I was named after my mother Hikari."

"Aw! How cute! And lucky! "So many Pokemon were named after their mothers, like Kirlia and Gardevoir. Even Homura was named after Delphox. " All I was named after was the boring sun."And her Sunny Day move.

"Hmph!" Floette put a hand on her hip and pouted, seeming as if she had something to say.

"And what's your name, Floette?" Hikaru asked dully.

"Ha! As if I'll tell you fools!"

Haru stepped in."It's something like Hana, isn't it?"

Floette whirled around, her eyes wide with shock. "How did you know?"

Haru nodded to the flower. "It's pretty obvious. Hey, I guess that makes us the three H's!"

"Not on your life." Hikaru shook his head as he tried to distance himself by walking farther away, only to bump into something dark. "Hm?"

"Sevipa!" He jumped back when the dark creature stepped out of the shadows, its long red fangs causing Haru to freeze. At that moment the fire in her mouth died away, making everything dark again with light from the moon peeking in.

"Ah!" Hikaru flipped backwards when the Seviper swung its head at him, trying to attack with its teeth. "Run!" Hikaru ran the fastest, and Haru was a stretch behind him as her mind rushed her body to move. Behind them was Floette, floating as fast as she could to catch up.

Haru gasped as the Seviper slithered quickly and was only an inch away from Floette. Haru jumped back to snag the slow Fairy-Type, then sprinted up to Hikaru's pace.

As Floette held onto her back, Haru whipped around to send a hasty Ember at the Seviper. The Seviper dodged and lunged forward. Haru had to jump again to avoid getting hit.

"Let me handle this!" Hikaru yelled, doing a backflip to hit their attacker with Swift. It was a sure shot, allowing the three to get away. But as they continued running they got slower with exhaustion, and it was safe enough to take a short break.

  "I'm tired," Floette said.

"No duh!" Hikaru breathed, catching his breath."And all yer yappin' doesn't help."

Floette broke out in laughter, then mocked the gray Normal-Type. "Ha! Need a language lesson or two, bumpkin?"

Haru didn't even try to make Floette feel better after being so scared. She seemed to have her own ways of coping at the expense of others.

"Why did you even follow us?" Hikaru hissed, fixing up his accent."No one likes you! You annoy everyone you come across!"

Floette flinched, obviously taken aback by Hikaru's harsh but true statement."That's not true!"For some reason she glanced at Haru, expecting something from her.

Haru didn't have any words. Anyone with functioning eyes and ears could tell that Floette was annoying. Now they were stuck with her, and all the floating Pokemon had done was be rude and complain about something that was her own fault.

"We just might die tonight," Hikaru said with a scratch at the ground."And I'll be danged if I have to die anywhere near you! "

"Why don't we just talk?" Hikaru's death talk was bothering her. She had to change it up!"I'm sure Sylveon is waiting for you! And Homura and Delphox are both waiting for me! Kirlia, too!"They had to consider their friends and family. What would they do if they never came back?

"Fine." Hikaru calmed down, rubbing his face with a tired paw.

"That's the stuff! Right Floette?" During the conversation she seemed to shrink back, her face looking strangely familiar. It was a mix of irritation with underlaying sadness. Haru was always one or the other. What was Floette thinking.

She didn't respond, and Haru just assumed she didn't want to talk, until after the silence Floette began talking. "It took forever to make friends, you know!" She practically yelled it. "But you two wouldn't know anything about that kind of hard work."

"Here we go again..." Hikaru gave up, looking away as she continued.

"I had to go through a lot just to make friends with Spritzee especially! How would you like it if you failed and were put out until you succeeded?"

"Hm?" Hikaru's eyes widened once with surprise at Floette's words, and Haru's chest got tighter with sympathy. Maybe that was what all Pokemon needed, good or bad. A true friend. Florges was a hateful Pokemon, all because of the difficulty Fairy-Types had to face to be accepted. However, no one in the village was like that now, but it was obvious the hate had rubbed off on Floette. The offspring take the poison....

"Look-" Haru was forced to pause when she heard leaves rustling. She looked last Floette, expecting their pursuer. She was right.

"Let's go!" Hikaru was still a step ahead of them, already ready to sprint before Haru even noticed the Seviper.

"Come on!"Haru looked at Floette, who hurried and clutched the fur on her back as the Seviper got closer.

" Seviper!"Haru's legs sprinted at full speed, and she almost passed Hikaru.

"Whoa!" Hikaru skidded to a stop, making Haru crash into him.

"Huh?!"Haru let out a paw to touch what she couldn't see, then her heart froze at what she couldn't feel. It was a cliff! She bent over it to let out a ball of fire that fell for what felt like eons before it hit the ground below. There was no way they'd survive a fall like that.

"Sevipa!" When she turned around the Seviper was several meters away.

"We can't run now!" Hikaru got into a battle crouch, his silver hairs standing on end.

"An Alliance!" That would be the only way to make a quick attack and escape!

"What?!" They didn't have time to argue! If they failed to form an Alliance immediately, they may end up as Seviper's dinner.

  "Types disadvantages won't matter!"

  "I'm not doing that!"

"We have to!" They had to build up teamwork or else it wouldn't work! "That's it!"She shot out a quick Ember to make the Seviper slither back a bit, allowing her to remember the song.

"Let's sing!" Meloetta could do it, and it was said that her song of togetherness was a sure way of bringing the harmony required to successfully form an Alliance.

Haru began dancing like in her practices, even as Hikaru and Floette just stared at her."I know you two have heard the song! Friends, friends, let's all be friends! Floette, let's be good friends!" Those were some of the lyrics, with an inserted name at the end.

"No!" Floette stopped floating, landing gently on the ground. "If you hate me..."

  "Seviper!"

"That's not true!"Haru shrieked as Hikaru sent a Hidden Power attack at their foe.

"It's not?" As Floette looked up at her Haru quickly nodded, readying herself.

  "A song of friendship..."

"Ring!"A bright saffron light enveloped the two Pokemon until Hikaru jumped forward, the light reaching him as well. A loud bell rang, and all three of them were filled with energy.

" Okay!"Haru crouched before leaping high into the air as Seviper tried to strike her."Hikaru, Swift! Floette, Fairy Wind, and me, Flamethrower! "

"Right!" Swift was sent first, the bright yellow stars powered by Haru's Flamethrower that went next. Floette's Fairy Wind pushed the moves forward even faster, the combined attack doing great damage on Seviper.  But not great enough.

"Seviper!" Seviper's tail glowed a purple hue as it swung it at Hikaru, sending the small Pokemon flying over the cliff. He managed to hold himself up over the edge just in time with a paw.

"Hikaru!" Seviper's fangs became purple, and Haru wasted no time in running over to help her friend. "Fend him off, Floette!"

"What?" Haru met her friend at the cliff's edge as he was struggling to pull himself up.

"Here." Haru offered a paw, but slipped on Tue crumbling ground, putting her in Hikaru's situation. "Floette!" She gasped, her heart thudding in her chest.

"I told you so!" Hikaru's paw slipped, but he managed to grab onto Haru's tail just in time.

"Ah!" Haru yelped, a strange shiver running up and down her spine. Her tail was most sensitive. "Can you grab onto something else?" And had Floette been defeated?

"Yeah I'll just grab the empty space below me!" Hikaru's sarcasm was barely masking his fear as they both held on, waiting for rescue.

"My flower!" Ahead of them it looked like Floette had been fighting the good fight, attacking the Seviper with her vines, as futile as the effort was. However, the Seviper landed a super effective hit with Poison Tail, knocking back the tiny Pokemon that was several times smaller than it.

Floette floated right above their heads, her face distraught with concern over her flower. "Help!" The Seviper plunged forward, missing Floette before falling over the cliff.

"But I can't do anything without my flower!"

  "That's a lie!" Hikaru growled.

"Help!"Floette couldn't just float there like a rock without gravity! She had to help!

" Okay!" Ignoring her lost flower Floette floated high above the two Pokemon, waving around her free arms and summoning a great pink wind. Her Fairy Wind move was strong enough to lift both Hikaru and Haru, and Haru's heart flooded over with relief when they reached safe ground once again.

"I thought we were done for!" Hikaru sighed.

Haru peeked back over the cliff, but it was too dark to see anything. She sent down a ball of fire to see if their attacker were still alive,  but when the fire finally landed it hit the ground.

She turned towards Floette, greatly surprised that she'd actually saved them, but grateful none the less. "Thanks, Floette!" Maybe they could be friends after all.

"Mhm." But Floette seemed distressed over losing her best.

They had missed school the next day while escaping the dungeon after finding an orb, but luckily there were no bad Pokemon like Seviper around. Haru even wondered if Kirlia had fought the Seviper before, allowing her to evolve. She knew she'd have to tell the story, and since Floette and Hikaru had the same experiences, she couldn't get in trouble.

"Do you know how long we were looking for you three?" Homura picked up her younger sister, tears falling down her face.

  "Sis...."

"Hikaru!" Sylveon ran up to her son, embracing him with her gentle feelers. "You had me so worried."

  "Mom..." He blushed.

Out of the corner of her eye Haru saw Floette sadly floating to her own mother, who looked none too pleased to see that she had lost her most prized possession. "You're still going to school tomorrow," Homura grinned, making Haru's stomach churn. Why did school have to ruin everything?

The day after that, as promised, Haru and the other two were forced to go to school anyway, since none of them had sustained any injuries and had gotten sleep while in the dungeon. Haru sat lamenting in her seat next to a worried Kirlia, and Hikaru sat in front of them napping. Only Floette was late this time.

Haru opened one eye, looking at Floette's empty desk. Well, not completely empty. Haru smiled.

Floette arrived, the depressed look from yesterday still plastered on her face. As she made her way to her desk, she paused. Haru expected Floette to yell at her or jump with joy, but the reaction was far from one she ever expected. "Even after I was so mean..." She turned to Haru, tears trickling out her gray eyes down her face. "Thank you."
