Eyes on Me
So, regrouping. ...
It's supposed to be a time to, you know, gather your thoughts, maybe plan a little. But no—here I am, surrounded by a bunch of villains who think I should be out there ripping throats.
We've pulled back for a moment in the USJ building. The League's scattered around this dimly lit corner, licking their wounds from the initial clash with the heroes. Dabi leans against a crumbling wall, Twice's muttering like he's two seconds from a breakdown, and Toga's sharpening her knife with this... unsettling grin.
Me?
I'm just trying not to let the others notice how hard I'm working to not kill anyone.
Toga speaks first. Of course, she does.
Toga: Usagi......
She twirls her knife, a sly smile playing on her lips.
Toga: You didn't really go for the kill out there. Why?
Oh great, just what I need.
I roll my eyes, though I make sure it looks more like an expression of boredom than concern. The truth? Yeah, Toga's got a point. The real Usagi—the villain whose life I'm currently pretending to live—was apparently a huge fan of bloodshed. But me? I'd prefer if everyone made it out alive, thank you very much.
Me: I have my reasons, Toga.
She isn't convinced. Her gaze sharpens, eyes gleaming with interest. Toga's the type to thrive on chaos and blood. She's noticed my reluctance.
Then comes Twice. He's pacing, his hands jittery.
Twice: No kills, no thrills! Why aren't we making them pay, Usagi?! We used to make 'em bleed!
Me: Twice, buddy, relax.
Twice is a lot to handle, especially now when the tension in the group is rising. My lack of villainy is starting to stand out, and they're beginning to sense it.
Dabi steps forward next.
Dabi: You're holding back, Usagi.
Of course, Dabi would notice. He's been eyeing me since the fight started, his usual nonchalant attitude replaced with something more calculated. Dabi doesn't just fight—he watches, waits, reads the situation. And right now, he's reading me.
Dabi: You didn't go for the kill when you had the chance.
Me: Maybe I'm just not in the mood to play with my food.
I shrug, my voice dripping with disinterest.
Dabi's not buying it. His eyes narrow, watching me closely, but he doesn't push further—for now.
But I can feel the weight of their suspicions. I've been playing this role too cautiously. It's only a matter of time before they realize I'm not the bloodthirsty villain they expect. And if they do figure it out... well, things are going to get ugly fast.
Toga doesn't let it go.
Toga: You used to love killing heroes. What happened? You're not going soft on us, are you?
Me: Soft? As if.
I can't let them see my hesitation. Not here, not now. I meet Toga's gaze with a cold stare.
Me: You want to win, right? Then we stick to the plan.
But Dabi's still watching me. His eyes flicker with suspicion. He's not one to let things slide, especially when someone's acting out of character. And right now, I'm definitely out of character.
Dabi: Plans change, Usagi. You used to love the chaos.
Me: Yeah, and I also love winning. If we kill every hero here, we get more heat than we need. The goal isn't blood, Dabi. It's sending a message.
There's a pause.
The tension in the room is thick, but I manage to hold their gazes. For now, they back off. They're not happy about the lack of carnage, but they're still following my lead—barely.
But I know it won't last long.
Me: Alright, back to the plan.
I turn my focus to Kurogiri, who's staying quiet as usual. If anyone trusts me, it's him.
Me: Kurogiri, where's the Nomu?
Kurogiri: It's waiting for your command, Usagi.
Good.
If I can keep them focused on the bigger picture, maybe I can still pull this off without losing my cover.
But deep down, I know Dabi and Toga are watching every move I make. They're not stupid. They're already starting to see through the cracks in my performance. If I'm not careful, it won't just be the heroes I'm up against—it'll be the League as well.
