In the following days in their journey tracking the trail of the transmitter signal and Samuel's map they come across the Ape Men which ends in a brutal stand-off. One Ape Men is brutally killed off on capture by Bollinger's men much to Denver's chagrin before he could study it further. Richard slightly suspicious about Bollinger's ruthlessness upon Chi's suggestion contacts his friend Paul to do a little digging about Bollinger's background. At night they encounter an enormous moth like creature obsidian in appearance, which unsuspectingly kills one of Bollinger's men and leaves others injured. Only Chi is able to save the cartographer from death by putting himself in front of the creature. Although curious at first as to why such a hostile creature wouldn't harm Chi neither Chi using any violent retaliation in response Richard dismisses the thought in the heat of the moment but not before sharing it with Prof. Denver. Chi notices a curious thing about Col. Bollinger and his men during the various encounters with the dangers of jungle. Chi discloses to Richard and Denver that in all his time witnessing various military tactics and surviving to live the tales of horrors of the Vietnam war from his childhood he had never once witnessed such extreme ruthlessness, uncalled for even from trained US military. Richard and Prof. Denver suspect of foul play by Chi and theorizes that somehow, he's connected at the heart of it but wants to divert off their attention from him. As they near to their destination of the transmitting signal the team is attacked by a ferocious 7 feet humanoid lizard creature. Despite sustaining heavy injuries initially, the creature manages to kill two men from Bollinger's team and the cartographer, finally ceasing moments before delivering a fatal blow to Richard. Just moments before taking Richard's life it stops and then vanishes amidst the jungle. Both Chi and Denver are left stunned as to why it didn't kill Richard with the exception of Bollinger who is left unfazed. While disposing one of the corpses of Bollinger's men, Chi notices something familiar which confirms his suspicions he had all along about Bollinger.
