Isle of Dogs is a move by Wes Anderson that is going to come out in April. Early screenings are already happening right now. And people are already claiming cultural appropriation because it's set in Japan.

Let me say this now, I don't believe in cultural appropriation. It's the dumbest shit I've ever heard. WOAH SOMEONE IS TELLING A STORY FEATURING A CULTURE THAT DOESN'T COINCIDE WITH THEIR SKIN. WHAT THE FUCK???

doesn't that sound really fucking stupid? Because it is.

Look, I get that it's shitty that people used to put stereotypes of other cultures in film and some times still do but that isn't in need of a new term. It's parody and racism.

And I'll have you know that right now when someone's claiming cultural appropriation for a movie it's usually a well made and we'll researched movie trying to use the culture to tell a story that sheds light on the culture and adds nothing negative.

Take Kubo and The Two Strings for instance. It's story is heavily based on Chinese culture. It's a beautiful story that uses the legends to create its own legends. That is appreciation of a culture.

More recently is Coco. I'm Mexican and I fucking loved Coco because it didn't make fun of my culture, it understood it. That's what good movies featuring other cultures do. They understand and teach the culture.

And they always call it out for movies featuring something that isn't related to white people. Based on their logic, wouldn't movies like Beauty and The Beast be cultural appropriation because they're appropriating french culture? Wouldn't frozen be cultural appropriation because they're appropriating Nordic culture?

Apparently not because it's white people.

So here's a PSA.

RACE AND CULTURE SHOULD BE APPRECIATED AND NOT SEPERATED FROM ARTIST. HOW CAN YOU LET PEOPLE LEARN ABOUT YOUR CULTURE IF YOU WONT LET THEM EVEN TRY TO APPRECIATE IT? YOUR CULTURE IS NOT ON A PEDESTAL AND NEITHER IS THEIRS. EQUALITY IS JUST THAT.
