Day 45 (pt.2): Well, There's only one Way to Find Out
When did everything fall down into madness? When did everything start to fall apart under the pressure? No matter how hard I tried to ponder on those questions, nothing seemed to click, my brain unable to manage both that and the sight in front of me. Everything was in shamble and the order I tried to preserve was no longer something that mattered in everyone's mind.
The agents, the clerks, all of them were running in a panic to avoid meeting their demise, the survivors forced to see the unlucky ones get taken away.
Seeing this, I couldn't do anything to stop it, not like I could have considering that the persisting danger was way beyond our control.
This is a true sight of Hell.
...
...
Y/N: Everyone, please make sure to remain as calm as possible, the situation will not improve otherwise!
I think I may have uttered those words beyond the 10th time but can you blame me for repeating these same words over and over again? In a place where everything was under the control of a single man making the decisions, it was the only thing I could do to appease the scared employees under my watch. Yet no matter how many times I did say them, the peace was only temporary, shattered by a sudden problem that everyone would have to rush to solve.
...And as much as I would like to not be affected by the current situation in order to calm both of the agents and office workers, that demand was beyond me. I am human after all, not a machine, being unaffected by such a sight and pressure would be akin to inhuman behaviour.
BongBong: ..?
Well, I suppose she is a perfect example of said inhuman behaviour. Calmly watching the chaos unfolding before her eyes, she hid her mouth behind one of her hands and yawned, completely unfazed by what was going on.
Sometimes I wish I could have at least half of her attitude when facing stressful situations. All I can see of myself right now is a nervous wreck praying that nobody has to die in order to complete this ordeal, my own sanity holding by a thread at this point. I am providing the best support that I can, I have to as the captain or else who knows what could happen but when everyone relies on me, who can I rely on to calm my fears and internal struggles?
...Why was I chosen as the captain? I don't have any qualifications as a leader, my emotions getting the best of me in times of need while someone more competent was calmly standing by my side.
"Mister Y/N, -'s containment room is having malfunctions, what should we do?", "Mister Y/N, Queen of Hatred is throwing a fit, we need someone sent there quickly!", "Mister Y/N-", the mere mention of the same 2 words looped at the start of each sentences given to me was like listening to a recorder, it was becoming mere noises in my ears.
Marisa: Hey captain, Nothing There is getting agitated!
Y/N: Huh? Oh... Uh... I'll go deal with it, please keep an eye on the employees.
Tossing my clipboard to the girl with blond hair, I ran deeper into the department in a daze, my head starting to hurt after I demanded so much from it in a short amount of time and it was starting to show up in my speech, I was having a hard time formulating quick thoughts unlike at the start of the day.
Calm down Y/N, it's just the stress getting to you.
Entering the containment room, my eyes squinted at the abomination standing on the opposite side of the room, its breathing echoing around me like it was right behind my head. The colors of the worlds now faded, I was having a hard time recognizing what color each body part was supposed to have but I should be happy about that, seeing less details about this thing means a better state of mind honestly.
Nothing There: ...
As usual the creature that tried to imitate humans simply panted at my arrival, letting out moans and groans ressembling a person's but nothing past that. My mind burdened by the worries of every employees under my supervision, my movements felt rapid and stiff, behaving more on instinct than putting any actual thoughts into the work.
However, even if my mind was disconnected from the monstrosity facing me and my work, an anomaly was picked up at the completion of my work. Yes, something was wrong, the work was completed quicker than usual, almost as if someone was rushing me outside of the room.
Quick... Quick... time... wait, no.
Y/N: ...
Looking down at my own hands, my brain was processing slower than usual, like I was walking through water. Moving my hands around to make sure of something, I witnessed said parts of my body follow my demand at a rather odd speed. One could easily dismiss it as them being tired but what if it was the opposite?
What if instead of feeling too fast, it was simply my mind not getting used to that abnormal speed? Exiting the containment room with that thought, it was like a blindfold fell down from my eyes, revealing a terrifying truth.
Everything was so fast, too fast compared to usual to the point of being nauseating. The office workers attending to their usual work were speed walking and the ones who were running looked like they were sprinting for their lives. A painful headache forming, I groaned to myself and tried to return to the main room, instantly tripping on my feet.
Office Worker: Mister Y/N, are you all right?!
Good, I guess the voices are not accelerated as well. Relieved to know that, I stood back up and gave the ones looking my way a casual smile before instantly tripping on my feet a second time, still not used to this time distortion.
Y/N: ...Yep, I'm fine.
Take it slow Y/N, no quick movements, especially now that everything is sped up. Step by step, I dragged my feet from the ground in the direction of the central rooms, forced to put my every efforts in not falling down yet again while my brain was adjusting to this new sensation.
I felt like a machine starting to malfunction, everything feeling faster than me, which was wrong considering that I was at the same speed and even faster than some of the workers around me.
BongBong: Bong?
Y/N: Yea yea, I'm fine, don't worry.
Catching my breath, I thanked the blond agent wearing QoH's set and she stormed off downstairs. Now I see how this day is going to play, clever I must admit. The true danger forming and making its presence known, I had to form some sort of idea to safely deal with it.
Easier said than done.
...
Y/N's mind: I guess the employees can't feel it as long as they don't know about it? That would explain why nobody is talking about this mess.
Or maybe the problem lies entirely on me rather than the others, which wouldn't be a bad guess from my part. Pondering on that possibility, a group of screams echoed in the distance, sending shivers down my spine.
Office Workers: The robots are back!
BongBong: *Sigh* Bong...
Letting out her catchword escape her mouth, the girl with blue hair twirled her rifle in her hands and sprinted in the direction that the employees came from, much fast now due to the time shenanigans currently happening. Gathering my energy, I called the running workers and grouped them together before placing my rifle in a sniping position, ready to place a bullet on the first threat that tried to enter the room.
Alter Ego: All captains, Dusk has settled, please be careful!
Hearing the voice of the one I have grown fond of through the device on me, a light smile appeared on my face before fading away, focusing on the problem at hand.
Y/N: ...Dusk? Hm, not a bad codename I suppose, though I have no clue what it means.
Office Workers: Sir?
Y/N: Don't mind me.
As I said those words, I pressed the trigger of my weapon and sent a projectile directly into one of the mechanical nuisances' head, grazing a clerk's head while doing so. Unfazed by the attack barely dodging their face, said clerk simply rolled their eyes and loaded their own pistol.
Must be one of the survivors of Binah's massacre if I had to assume.
Survivor Clerk: All of you, office workers, come with me, let the agents deal with the threat!
In times such as this, there was no need for comments, battles undergoing in each and every corners of the facility. Staying in the main room to intercept any runaway foes, the one who seemed to have a better grasp on their sanity raised their voice, leading the clerks away from the source of danger.
...Is it me or are the office workers starting to act more and more heroic, at least compared to the first days? Zeta19 first popped into my mind when asking myself that question and now that clerk from a moment ago.
Whatever, this isn't the priority, I still have to assure the safety of the upper level of the Central Command department, I don't have time to ponder about such dumb questions. If they want to act more valiantly, who am I to stop them? As long as they know the risks, I know when to not impose myself.
...
...
Alter Ego: There, stay down this time!
Yelling my words to the final duo of rogue elements lurking inside the Security department, I raised the black sword of the dark forest above my head and dashed through them, hearing the parts falling apart like a castle made of cards. Letting out a deep breath, I silently turned around and witnessed the multiple piles of scrap that were once terrifying machines.
Hava: *Whistle* You sure did a fast work of them, even that generator thing didn't stand a chance.
Alter Ego: This isn't over yet, make sure that none are lurking around.
Hava: Yep, got it~
Seriously, even in this mess, she has the time to smile? This is serious, we could get attacked at any moment and-
Hava: Come on, don't give me that face. Now's not the time for you to get angry, though you still look cute when you do.
Alter Ego: H-Hava, now's not the time!
Ignoring my words, she turned around and ran off, calmly bouncing on the walls to avoid clerks passing by. Feeling a blush forming on my face, I covered myself and went the opposite direction, trying to calm myself down.
Calm down... Calm down, this is an emergency. You need to act cool, that'll make Y/N impressed and proud of you! Yes, I have to do my best!
Daniel: Man, this is going to be a nightmare cleaning this up.
As I returned to the main room, one of the agents under my watch, Daniel, kicked one of the metallic bodies on the ground. Standing beside him was Elis, still as shy as ever and not saying anything, watching the man with worried eyes. Stepping further in the room, the gazes of the many employees under me widened in relief, knowing that I was back.
Alter Ego: Is everyone alright? Please bring the injured people away from the doors.
I had to be careful with my words and not let panic slip out, that's how a leader should be to some extend. I have to remain collected, I'm sure Y/N would act like this if he were here... well, he has his own team to worry about so I'm sure he's doing exactly that.
Daniel: Oh hey captain, took care of the remaining ones?
Alter Ego: Yes, we should be fine temporarily. However, keep your guard up, we don't know how many are left.
I'm not usually the one to come up with plans, I don't have the smarts to do so compared to Hava and even the one I cherish in my heart. That was a truth I had to face, I was not the smartest one around, which tends to bring me into embarrassing situations.
In ordeals such as this, I often have to shift gears and begin to perform calculations based around a new question. Instead of asking myself "what should I do?", the question becomes "what would Hava and Y/N do?", following that question was enough to give me sparks of inspiration and formulate a plan.
Sometimes, I do ask myself "Shouldn't you start thinking as yourself instead of thinking as someone else?" but in a place like this, it was not a choice. For the sake of everyone putting their faith in me, I cannot fail.
Alter Ego: ...
I wonder how he's doing right now, the stress must be starting to get to him, I at least know that much about him after knowing him for so long. Fighting my heart basically telling me to go see for myself, I focused my attention on the wounded employees placed against the wall, hidden from the doors.
Hava: Pheeew, man, it almost made break a sweat~!
One of the entrances opening, a familiar voice entered alonside the figure of the girl with long brown hair, flashing a grin on her face before pushing away the hair covering one of her eyes, briefly flashing the monocle hidden behind.
Daniel: Oh hey Hava.
Hava: Mhm, let's see, 7 wounded. I would say that this is bad but the worst has yet to arrive.
Alter Ego: W-What do you mean?
What was she talking about? Is the day going to keep going and for how long? We already have people unable to fight, what will happen to them if something even worse strikes? Even more worrying would be how many new casualties could possibly emerge from such a confrontation.
Hava: ...
However, the smile that she carried slowly dropped, unable to answer my question. Sensing the tension forming around the woman with red eyes, those around began to sweat bullets, knowing that if something was dangerous enough to make her drop her casual act then they had a reason to be worried.
...And when that threat arrived, I knew that she had all the reasons in the world to be worried. It was something that made me consider just giving up until I remembered about the face of the captain of the Central Command team, I had to remain strong for him.
Please Y/N, please be safe as well.
...
...
That was it, that was the final weight that made the scales snap under the pressure. The final hurdle of the day appearing. Although the time distortion was not getting any better, it was nothing compared to the pinnacle of our problems. I remember hearing the first screams of shock before being followed by fear, pure fright and nothing else.
It was a memory of a previous day that marked my mind, one that I would remember for a long while. The day this facility was faced against Tiphereth, that was where that scar first appeared. Everything devolving into pure madness while the employees were running around to dodge fate for as long as possible.
Yes, when I witnessed one of these massive constructions... shrines in one of the hallways on the Central Command department, I knew that it was over. Everything sped up to an unbearable degree at least for me, I was merely standing still in shock, watching the office workers running around with fright in their eyes.
...But maybe the fear was already present to begin with, slowly seeping into everyone's spirit and breaking them little by little. This was the final nail in the hammer, shattering the will of many of the workers, who ran around in hope of not getting caught.
Y/N: ...
BongBong: Bong!
Then, a violent slap was sent my way, snapping me out of my trance of horror. Placing my hand over the red area forming on my face, I faced the culprit of said attack and saw her observing me with her dead gaze like usual, awaiting orders.
Right... I have to do something but what CAN I do in this situation? As I asked myself that, I witnessed with my own eyes a purple torn shooting through the room, impaling at least a handful of the office workers. Sprouting from that sight were even stronger screams of terror.
Something, I had to do something to solve this mess as soon as possible but what? What could I do...
A memory for a memory.
Y/N: Everyone scatter! All agents take refuge inside an abnormality's containment room! We have to complete this day before more victims can fall to this!
Yes that idea was rather... frail if I do say so myself. After all, I didn't know if it would resolve the same way but at this rate, we were losing people left and right like feathers on a wing, we had to act fast and that was what I came up with.
BongBong: BongBong!
Survivor Clerk: Hey everyone, you heard the captain, we've got an emergency!
To tell the truth, this plan was based on nothing more than optimism. After all, I couldn't see the future, it was beyond my abilities and so, I couldn't tell the outcome of such a decision but I decided to operate with the thought of it working flawlessly instead of it turning out to be a failure.
So, clenching my teeth, I ignored the time warping around my existence and made my way through the crowd of workers, yelling with desperation into my radio for the other captains to opt for the same strategy.
Please work, I beg you! This looming danger, these filthy shrine contaminating this whole facility and plunging it into madness was like a barrier that one could never climb over normally, that's why it was necessary to play smart and go around it somehow.
Finally reaching for the door of one of the containment room, I rushed inside without a single moment of hesitation. Once inside, it was like a miracle had blessed me with its benevolent light, looking down upon my strained body with kindness. Floating above me was the large cross that inside a giant skull, the one shining light in all of this chaos, the first abnormality to arrive in this facility, One Sin.
One Sin: ...
Y/N: ...
My mind exhausted and body weary, I forced my hands and began writing down my observations, with a light smile in contrast to my sad appearance. Hell, even the pink suit that I was wearing was not able to provide enough mental support to keep me anchored.
...Witnessing its light shining down upon me, it felt like my mind was being washed clean, purged of many thoughts and fears.
So even after all this... why... WHY IS THE DAY STILL GOING?!
Y/N's mind: I-It's not working! Crap, this is bad!
I had to think of a secondary plan or else everyone is going to perish... and we'll be forced to redo this day all over again. Just thinking about that was enough to make my heart ache, twisting at the mere idea of being forced to live through this torture a second and even a third time.
The work over, I stood still for a moment, looking at the radiant light emanating from the floating skull staring back at me. The plan failed and I could hear the screams echoing in the corridor on the other side of the unlocked door.
Alter Ego: A-Are we going to die? Is this the end?
Dana: Come on, now's not the time to give up! Keep focusing, we're almost there- Hey, what are you doing?!
Y/N: What's going on?
Dana: The clerks- The clerks are entering the containment rooms!
Upon hearing those words, my body froze and the sound of rushing footsteps entered the room I was in. Quickly turning to face the unknown person, it turned out to be one of the office workers under my care, entering and locking the door.
Y/N: W-What are you doing?
Shocked to my core, I didn't know how to react to such a sight and the one facing me probably knew that because they simply pulled out a notepad and a pen and revealed a frown.
Clerk: We've heard you speak of your plan mister Y/N, all we need to do is work on those abnormalities right? Then I'll gladly take the bullet if it means that more people can be saved.
I was speechless, all of them were willing to go with my plan, they had faith in my actions to the point of putting their lives at risk just for the sake of ending this nightmare. Of course, the agents weren't enough for it to stop, we needed more support but I never could have imagined that the office workers would defect from their duties in order to assist the other employees in their task.
Y/N: You...
Clerk: Come on mister Y/N, we have to finish this and end this terrible day!
Y/N: ...
Walking past me, the worker smiled at the abnormality, as if facing death without a single ounce of fear in their soul. This was the true definition of a brave sacrifice, all of that to save others from a possible death.
It was all...
Intercom: Warning! PE overload in progress, release in 30 seconds!
So surreal...
...
...But I guess I should be happy about this, right? To live because dozens of people jumped in front of the bullet aimed for you, is this something that I should truly be happy about? Pondering on that question, that was how this hellish rampage came to an abrupt stop before everything turned black.
The last thing I remember seeing was the clerk standing beside me giving me one final smile before vanishing, falling into darkness.
Falling? No, it was more like I was dragged there forcefully by something, an exterior force.
Ah yes, tomorrow is day 46, this is the reason why.
