4: Welcome to God's Toolbox

Jack got out of his car. He had his mother drive it to his house that morning. They shared pleasantries and he reassured her that everything would be fine and that he would stay in the house (at least for now). He mentally decided to help this girl who was trapped in the basement. He didn't understand why anyone would trap someone in the basement. How long has she been trapped? How is she not dead yet?

He wasn't paying attention as he crossed the road to go to the town's tool shop, that he saw the bright, blinding light of heaven before he realized what had happened.

He was like a deer in the headlights. The man inside the car slams on his steering wheel, the car making a loud angry beep. The man looked old with his balding, white hair and large mustache. He waved his fist near to his head. "Get off the road!" he roared and Jack blinked before he ran to the entrance of the store.

He breathed a breath of relief. His bad luck seemed to not go away even after leaving his previous town. Hopefully nothing bad would happen.

Jack walked into the store which had a sign out front. The sign had an open, red toolbox with a bunch of tools inside of it. Some were ones you'd expect: hammer, screwdriver, and a container of nails, but there were also some that didn't seem to fit the theme or the scaled box. There was a chainsaw, what looked to be Thor's hammer Moljnir and a pickaxe. Above the toolbox was a hand that disappeared into the clouds above. Light was shinning inthe space between the hand and the clouds. The sign read, "God's Toolbox".

Jack entered the store with his phone in his hands. He had written a list of what he might need and what list of what he had to get rid of if he needed to ask questions about it. The tool shop was small, but sort of cozy. It reminded Jack of a pawn shop or a one room schoolhouse. There was a lady behind a counter who had her chin lazily resting on her palm. She didn't notice Jack, but a bell that was above the door rang and alerted her of his presence. She lifted her body and stood. "Welcome ta God's Toolbox." She looked at Jack with a sort of interest. "What can I get ya?" Her voice was interesting and probably not from here. It sounded as if she came from the country or maybe that was just her country twang.

Jack looked down at his phone at the list, suddenly forgetting what he came here for. "Um...can I buy a crowbar and something to break chains with?"

She tilted her head as she got a crowbar from under the contour. The two didn't break eye contact the whole while through. Jack could feel beads of sweat form and slowly dripped down his forehead. He felt as if he were being judged or maybe inspected. She slowly placed the iron tool on the counter, it clinked upon the glass. Her mouth was scrunched to on of the corners of her mouth, the tips of her tongue was inching to join the lip. "Ya not from here are ya?" she finally said.

"Nope," Jack said as he reached for the crowbar. The word was drawn out and slowed as if the world was in slow motion.

"That's what I thought," she said. "I know almost everyone in Elevation." The world went back to normal speed as soon as the girl spoke again. "The name's Coty. What's yours?" She held out her hand for Jack to shake.

Jack took the hand and shook it. As his hand went back to his side he said, "My name is Jack."

"Nice to meet ya," Coty said before the door slammed open.

"Coty, someone bought the ghoul house!" An old man yelled storming into the shop. Jack jumped back because the elder marched his way to the counter and attempted to push him to the side. Jack barely dodged his hand. He sure was quick for a man who looked to be in his 70's.

He slammed his fist on the counter which Coty glared at him for. "Malcom Sal Hunter, for the last time." She took in a deep breath making a specifically out of it. "Stop barging in here and slamming my counter!" She took another breath but this one was to catch her breath. "I swear, if you break it again I'm going to take half of your retirement money."

"Coty, please hear me out," Malcom sort of pleaded. "The new guy is so weird! I went to the house yesterday and found that he bought it. This is unacceptable! That house is supposed to be mine, not these fraud monster hunters!"

"So it was you?" Jack said, stepping forward with the crowbar in his hand. This guy was the 'intruder' he saw under the sheet yesterday during the house. "Why would you do that! You scared me so much."

The old man saw him and just got angry back. "You; you don't deserve that house. It's mine and I won't let you have it."

"It's my house," Jack yelled. "I bought it fair and square and don't change the subject, I can get you arrested—"

"STOP!" ordered Coty as she pushed the men away from each other using her arms. They hadn't noticed her come from behind the counter. "Stop fighting, both of you." She turned to Malcolm. "Apologize to Jack."

Malcolm threw his hands up, not in defeat but in anger. "Why do I have to apologize? He's the one who bought the house."

"Malcolm, wouldn't you like to spend the rest of your days at a nice beach watching the sun set every night or something instead of hunting for these 'monsters'?" City asked, making finger air quotes for the last word.

"No!" Malcolm yelled like a definite child. "I won't stop hunting for these real monsters. I'll find one and I'll show this town that monsters are still alive." He started walking towards the exit. "Cotton, you just lost a customer. Just know that!"

The bell rang as he departed the store. The mood felt dejecting, so much that Jack felt the need to say, "I'm sorry" to Coty.

"It's okay," Coty said, walking back to behind the counter. She rested her chin on her hand like she was before Jack entered the store. "Malcolm's just a crazy old man, but he always comes back to get another thing for his monster hunting inventors or whatnot." She sighed. "He's my grandfather, but what can you do about that?" Coty proped herself up so she was standing properly. "Is that crowbar the only thing you need or do you need something else?"

"Actually, I do need something to cut thick chains," Jack said. Coty raised an eyebrow but she went into the back room and brought out something that looked like a weird pair of huge scissors. "You'll need this puppy; a nice bolt cutter."

"Thanks," Jack said, grabbing the tool with his other hand. "I think that will be all."

He began walking before Coty stopped him with, "Are ya planning on buying those or are ya just going to steal them right in front of me?"

Jack's eyes widened as he paused. He turned around and gave her a crooked smile. "I'll pay."
