Prologue

The job was supposed to be easy.

Just something to do for a friend. Something to do with his free day. After they had escaped to the surface, everyone had found jobs that fit them. Alphys and Sans both worked in the science department, Papyrus was a cook, Undyne the head of the Royal Guard, and Toriel a teacher. Everyone was good and happy. They hung out, played games, had fun as friends when time permitted it. Everything had been good.

"Where's Olivia?"

Sans hadn't even really known about her. He barely knew the class, he was just the substitute. A one time gig, a favor for a friend.

A promise.

Asgore had agreed to care for his wife when Sans had left for the school, the poor woman sniffling over the phone. At least Sans had been there before, sometimes he picked up Frisk from school, so he generally knew the layout of the building.

Toriel's class was a group of kindergarteners, the young children having looked up at Sans with those innocent eyes. They didn't know what to expect, neither had Sans. The most he had anticipated was maybe a kid crying at the worst, a pun ready to make them feel better.

The kids seemed to have loved him at first, all asking a million questions. Of course, they had asked about Toriel, eager voices rising as they asked when she'd be back.

"Tomorrow, Queen's come down with a cold," Sans said, "She said it snot funny, but honestly that was a bit cold of her to say."

The children all giggled at his puns, a few laughing loudly at the body humor. Toriel had a lesson plan laid out, just some simple coloring stuff. All Sans had to do was really watch them, it was an easy day.

Then came recess.

Apparently Sans had to go out and watch them, something he wasn't really happy to hear, but he did anyway. The sun beat down onto his face, Sans squinting his eye sockets away from the bright light.

It was a rather small playground, right on the edge of the forest that surrounded the school. They were all excited, spreading out like a tidal wave. Sans would admit he did fall asleep a bit, but he often did that. Standing there, leaning up against a wall, he felt a bit sleepy. He was bone tired after having watched over the kids all day, and they were all on the playground.

Sans couldn't have been asleep for more than a few minutes before a small hand was tugging on his sleeve, the man looking down to find one of the little boys looking up at him.

"Sub! Where's Olivia?" The boy had asked. "We want to play on the swings with her."

"Olivia? Sorry kid, I don't know you all by names," Sans told him. "Which one's Olivia?"

"She has blonde hair, she's wearing the pink flower dress!" The boy had said, pointing to the slide. "She was over there, but I can't find her anymore."

Sans looked around, a twinge of worry flickering across his soul. Yeah, the description rang a bell for one of the girls in the class. Olivia. Blonde hair, pink and white dress with roses on it, she had commented on how her and Sans' slippers had matched earlier. There's no way he lost her, right?

Maybe it would have been better if he hadn't looked at the woods.

There was Olivia, but... there was a man next to her.

They were hidden in the depths of the woods, trees and branches covering the view. Olivia looked so tiny compared to the tall man, and it was hard to even see him. Sans couldn't make him out, he couldn't tell what was going on from this distance. All he could see was a tall man dressed in a black suit, Olivia's small hand holding his own as she looked up at him. A weird feeling grasped at his soul. One that made his bones feel a sudden rush of adrenaline.

Oh...

Oh no.

"Stay here," Sans told the boy.

His feet felt as if they were light, controlled by something else as he found himself running towards the forest. Adrenaline pounded throughout his bones as he ran, leaves and twigs brushing past his skull as he made a beeline towards her.

She's fine, she'll be fine!

His soul felt heavy, breath shallow as he yelled out her name. There was no reason to freak out, right? This guy wasn't a kidnapper, maybe the recent killings that had been going on weren't the result of him. Maybe it was just Papyrus, maybe -

"Olivia!"

She turned to look at him, large blue eyes locking with his eye lights. The girl looked so innocent, so carefree.

Then they went wide.

By that point, Sans had managed to get close enough to be within range of the blood splatter. It was a mess, as if her body was a water balloon that just popped. The blue eyes rolled up into the back of her head before she slumped to the ground in front of him. Sans didn't even process the fact that his cheek was now stained re before he felt the unusual warmth of human body heat burning at his cheek. The smell was putrid, stench of freshly torn guts lingering in the air, dancing around him as if to mock the skeleton.

He couldn't look away. Heavy breaths escaped from him as everything seemed to slow down when she had fallen, torso completely torn from the bottom half of her body. The way she had landed was terrible, legs twisting backwards before the tip half fell upon them. The final expression on her face didn't share the horror displayed on Sans', no; it had been an expression of utter surprise. She didn't even know she was dying until she was gone.

Bones rattling filled the air as Sans looked up in horror at the man, who had at least 5 feet on him. Tall and slender, a blank white face slowly turning from the girl to him.

His soul felt like it was just crushed and torn apart. Something settled within him.

His soul pounded loudly as Sans fell back onto the ground below him, feet like dead weights that did nothing but shake, unable to pick himself up and run. Fear smothered his voice, mouth falling, speechless. The man reached towards him, then his hand paused. Muttering something under his breath.

He was going to die he was going to die he was going to die-

Sans couldn't do anything. His breathing stopped, bones rattling more and more as they seemed to stare towards one another with uncertainty hanging in the air as blood did from the trees. A distant scream could be heard before the tall killer just... vanished.

Leaving nothing but a mutilated body of the young girl and a hyperventilating skeleton behind.
