Jeanine pov
"Andrew, are you coming to the library after school?" I ask my best friend.
"Sure. I think Evelyn's coming too."
"Okay." To be honest, Evelyn Johnson was never one of my favorite people. But she was our friend so I guess I should let her in our little group, although what I really wanted was some time alone with Andrew.
So, when school ended, Andrew and I went to our little table in the library, reading as we waited Evelyn. The book I was reading was interesting, something about emotions related to the brain.
"Hi guys." I looked up to see Evelyn. But she wasn't alone. Behind her was a stiff boy as old as she was. "Everyone, meet Marcus. Marcus, my friends Andrew and Jeanine."
"Hello." I said, focusing back on my book. This stiff wasn't normal. He was much more likable and smart looking than most, strangely eyeing the books with curiosity.
"Hello Andrew. Hello Jeanine." The way he said my name made my stomach turn upside down. Come on Jeanine, he's just a stupid Abnegation!
"Do you mind if he joins us today? I mean, we had a school project to do." Evelyn asks.
"Sure. Come on sit Marcus." I see Andrew trying to smile. He isn't Amity, but he knows better than to be mean to an innocent Abnegation boy.
"Thank you." Marcus answers.
And that was my first time ever meeting Marcus Eaton.

"Now class. For your final project of this year, you will have to work as a three to do something useful to the community. Alright? Now group up!"
It was my 10th grade teacher Miss Campbell speaking. I was bored during most of the lesson, since I already knew the things she was talking about. But this really caught my attention because it would decide the final grade of the year. This would stay in my report cards forever.
"Oh and one more thing!" Miss Campbell shouted out to the already noisy crowd. "You HAVE to have at least one member from a different faction. That way, we can be sure that you are all integrated."
"Okay Miss Campbell!" The kids shout.
"You are now dismissed!" She tells us and we all storm out of the classroom.

"Andrew, so do you want to group up with me?" I ask my best friend.
"Umm..." he staggers, then looks at his Dauntless girlfriend Natalie. "Sorry Jeanine but I'm already in the same group with Natalie and Hana."
"Oh alright." I answer, a little disappointed. After all, he's supposed to be my best friend. And I might have even had a little crush on him if it wasn't for his Dauntless girlfriend.
"Sorry really..." he apologizes.
"No it's fine. All cool." I tell him as I step aside. Then, I see Evelyn.
"Jeanine!" She calls out. "Could you please join our group? We could really use a brain like yours."
"Sure..." I say, knowing that she actually must wanted to use me to her advantage.
"Yay! Marcus, we have another member now!"
Marcus? I had completely forgotten about Marcus Eaton. Of course Evelyn grouped up with that stiff, since he is supposed to be her boyfriend.
He nods. "Good." He looks at me with his brown eyes. His stare makes my heart leap.
Evelyn claps her hands. "Perfect! Now let's start brainstorming! Shall we?"

We ended up with making a temporary hospital for the Factionless. It was a very Abnegation idea, very stupid too if you ask me. But well, I guess this is teamwork.
And of course, since Marcus and Evelyn apparently weren't smart enough, so I got the role of the doctor. I would be healing the wounded Factionless while they only needed to be a receptionist or a nurse. This was going to be a very long week.
We got into the hospital building, which was definitely weary and cheap looking.
"We're going to work here?" I asked in dismay.
"Wanting to work in a better environment shows too much self-centeredness." Marcus responds. "Plus, we should try to understand the Factionless in order to treat them."
"Whatever! I am not in Abnegation!" I yell.
"We are trying to achieve an Abnegation style project." He reminds me.
"Ugh." I grumble, then glare at him.
He smiles slightly. "You'll see Jeanine. We have at least a week to learn about each other."
Each other? My heart starts to beat fast. What did he mean? More than that, what did I want it to mean?
※※※※※
"Next!" Evelyn calls out. "Mr. Smithfield suffering from cardiac diseases?"
A man croaked something that sounded like a yes. Evelyn helped him in the most ineffective way possible as he limped. She would make an Abnegation, stiff and stupid.
"Jeanine and Marcus will help you from here." She winked. Ugh, taking all the credit for my future work.
"Alright sir. So how can I help you." I ask in a tone to show I am clearly not interested.
"What she means is." Marcus says softly "Is there anywhere that's bothering you?"
"Better young man. Good manners like an Abnegation." He wheezed. He ripped open his tattered Erudite blue shirt and banged on his heart. "Here! It hurts so much!"
"Do NOT bang on your chest!" I shout, jumping upwards. "And you don't deserve that blue shirt. You're not Erudite what so ever." I glare at my patient.
"Easy Jeanine." Marcus soothes. "Sir, I believe there might be some side effects that could occur if you bang on your chest. So please, do not do that for your own sake."
How is he so calm? I still glare at the man.
"We'll have to check your heart vitals status if you please." Marcus says. The man nods and Marcus hands me a syringe of sedatives. I inject it into his veins but something is stuck inside.
As I do though, I feel a hand on mine. Warm, soft. I look up at Marcus who is leaning towards me. "That was too hard. You should do it more slowly, like this."
He presses his hinger on mine as we push the syringe. As soon as it's over, I expect him to pull away. After all, most stiffs hate contact. However, he remains still and it surprises me.
"Why? Does it bother you?" He asks with a smile.
"No, not at all." Just... a little surprised. You are an Abnegation as far as I know.
"As far as you know, yes." He says. Wait. Could he hear my thoughts?
He smiles. "More like read. It runs in the family. And how are you so sure I am purely Abnegation?"
I look at him. "Does that mean..."
"Yes Jeanine. I am what you think I am."
"Divergent." But how did he know already?
He sighs. "Sometimes, parents could have a strong influence over you. My parents want me to be a pure Abnegation while they aren't. In fact, they are the most selfish people I have ever met. They hit me and abuse me until dawn every single day and night. In order to make sure I will still be their little slave, they smuggled some illegal drugs and weapons to the Erudite in order to get me a pre-test."
The Erudite? Should I report this?
"Please don't." He begs. "They might be abusive and unloving parents, but they still gave birth to me. If it weren't for them, I would have nevee met you." He smiles slightly.
I blush as I change the subject. "We had a cardiac surgery to do I believe?"

Turns out Marcus was divergent for Abnegation and Erudite. During our week running the hospital, we grew closer and closer. Evelyn was always the receptionist, never suspecting anything. While Marcus and I always loved our private moments where the patient was sedated and we were all alone.
The Friday, also known as the last day of the hospital project, I was surprised to find myself extremely glum. Why? I didn't need to deal with those filthy Factionless anymore.
But then, I won't be seeing Marcus as much.
It surprises me how much pain that brings me. Was I ever that close to him?
Plus, he already has a girlfriend. Evelyn. And they were going to choose Abnegation together.
I know I belong in Erudite. I am destined for something greater than just sitting as some Abnegation man's wife.
My inner conflicts aren't small. But I have to ignore them. For humanity's sake.
※※※※※
"Jeanine, everything alright?" Marcus asks as soon as we are alone. It's still Friday, and I want nothing else but to go back home.
"Yes, why do you ask." I snap.
"Just..." he doesn't say anything.
I roll my eyes. I am trying to make this as easy as possible for both of us. "Great. Let the next patient in."
"No."
I stop. "What did you say?"
"I said, no."
I look at him to see what he was up to. When my eyes finally meet his, he bends down. Slowly. Carefully, his soft warm lips meet mine and his hand brushes my cheek. Tenderly.
I couldn't believe it. Marcus Eaton. My first kiss.
He pulls back after a few seconds. "I will miss you Jeanine." He strokes my chin. "Really."
"Then come to Erudite." I say. "Be with me."
He shakes his head. "I can't. My parents. I can't betray them, no matter what they have done to me."
"You don't have to be so selfless. Especially if you come to Erudite."
He shakes his head sadly once more. "It's just... Impossible. Sorry Jeanine. But remember this. I will miss you."
Tears intend to fill my eyes but I don't let them. "Then make the next patient come in." I say quietly.
※※※※※
I knock on the gray door before going in. After all, the person who runs the simulation would be in Abnegation and I want to be as polite as possible.
I march into the room. An Abnegation woman is quietly waiting.
"Welcome Jeanine." She says quietly.
"Hello." I say stiffly. I am supposed to hate Abnegations as an Erudite even if there are exceptions like Marcus.
"Please, come and sit." She points to a seat. As I pass by, I read her name tag. Sarah Eaton.
"You're Marcus's mother." I whisper.
She then stares at me. "I never knew my son made acquaintances with Erudites."
Inside, my heart burns in fury. She was the one who crafted him to be Abnegation! To be stiff, unimportant, insignificant. So that he couldn't be anything else than an Abnegation leader.
So that he can't be mine.
I glare at her but I am not sure if she noticed. I sit on the chair and go into a deep sleep, full of dreams.
Well, not exactly dreams. Simulations.
※※※※※
It's choosing day. I wake up nervous. Not for myself obviously, but for Marcus. I really hope he'll choose Erudite.
"Remember. Choose Erudite, you're with me. Choose Abnegation, we're enemies again. Forever."
That's what I told him yesterday. I close my eyes to make my last prayer and step out of bed to get dressed in my brand new blue dress.
※※※※※
I sit in line, waiting. As expected, Evelyn, Andrew and Natalie chose Abnegation. But the only person that matters to me is Marcus.
"Eaton, Marcus."
Candor leader Reyes calls out his name. He must have mixed feelings about the whole ceremony after his own daughter transfered to Amity last year. And he doesn't try to hide it.
In the midst of the grey, supposedly selfless group sits Sarah and Arnold Eaton, staring at their son confidently. They know he would choose Abnegation.
Or so they think.
My heart races. I feel sweat running down my whole body. I close my eyes shut and pray.
I can feel Marcus looking at me. Glancing at me as if he would choose me. Yes Marcus. You do belong in Erudite. Be with me.
I open my eyes to smile at him. He smiles back, but it's a sad smile. That couldn't mean he was going to leave me!
I beg him with my eyes.
Please Marcus. Please.
He eyes me and smiles one last time and slices his palm with the given knife. Drops of his dark red blood fall onto the pile of smooth stones.
"Abnegation." Reyes announces.
※※※※※
So many years has past. Since that day, I had always thought of Marcus as an enemy. He betrayed me. He could have been here with me, but alas, he stayed.
We still see each other frequently though now that we're both leaders. He has the power his parents wanted him so much to take grasp of.
Parents. Oh yes. How could I ever forget Sarah and Arnold.
They dieda few years ago, acting as if they were perfect angels until the very end. They were attacked by a band of angry Factionless who were surprisingly very well organized. Our researchers and Candor journalists are putting their hands on the issue, although we have no idea what to find.
Andrew and Natalie got married and are happy in Abnegation. They have children now, aged 14 years I think. Although the two aren't twins, they're still in the same school year.
And as for Marcus...
As I mentioned before, he is now the leader of Abnegation. He and Evelyn got married after initiation, although he is widowed now after Evelyn's sudden and mysterious death.
They also had a kids. Twins called Tobias and Tiana. A lonely bunch, considering how they lost their mother at such a young age. I never can stop thinking that they could have been mine. My children. My own flesh and blood.
No, I should be grateful for the place I have in Erudite.
※※※※※
It's choosing day again. This year, Tobias and Tiana Eaton would be choosing the faction they belong to. As far as I know, Marcus has done the same thing his parents did to him such a long time ago. I only hope that this time, the twins would be brave and wise enough to choose where they really belong no matter what their father has been telling them.
Then again, I can only hope.
※※※※※
We're now all gathered in the hall. I sit confidently in the first row of Erudite, watching the ceremony and getting ready to know our very newest initiates.
"Hello there to you all." It's Dauntless leader Max speaks. It's his turn to host the ceremony this year. "Welcome to the choosing ceremony. Let us begin."
I watch as the young sixteen year olds squeeze the blood of their palms into the bowl they believe they belong in. I clap whenever someone chooses Erudite. After all, they could use some encouragements from their leader. But except for that, K wasn't really interested.
That is, until I saw the Eaton twins.
The girl went first. "Eaton, Tiana." Max called out. I saw Marcus's slender daughter walk into the spotlight. She was quivering. I prayed for her. So that she would not make the same mistake her father made.
I saw her eyes close before she looked away from the stones and dropped her blood into the bowl of sizzling coals.
"Dauntless." Max announced.
I was overwhelmed. The girl, Tiana, actually chose the faction she wanted. She defied her father. I looked at Marcus, whose eyes were burning with fury. I stole a small smile for myslef. Good job, courageous girl. You owe me for that.
"Eaton, Tobias."
Now the boy. He steps up, not looking comfortable at all. I saw him gulp as his eyes met his father's. He first turned to the bowl of stones but then changed his mind and made the same choice as his sister.
"Dauntless." Max announced once more.
The twins won. They won their father. They were brave. And wise. Yes, wise.
And that was when I thought, yes. Although they might not be my own children, we still have things in common. After all, it is the wisdom that makes me Erudite. And their courage to flatten Marcus's nose makes them completely eligible for Dauntless.

(Ok I know. That wasn't exactly a oneshot nor concentrated on Jeancus... but still. It was just for fun.)
All characters belong to Veronica Roth except Tiana Eaton, who is an OC by SophiePurvis (just wanted to include her if you don't mind...)
