6: The gathering begins with Wen .... but there is a problem

The next morning, Wei Ying, Jiang Cheng and Jiang FengMian stood on the docks as things were checked over.

'I know you stuffed something up and this whole thing will be called off.' Jiang Cheng whispered as he waited, even though he really wanted to go.

'I missed nothing. I will not take the chance of not helping them.'

'Sure, did you happen to remember the horses after we get off the boats?'

'Hm, a man is placed on the lookout so as we are coming into the dock, the horses will be readied half an hour before we arrive so we do not even need to wait for them to be saddled.' He ignored the shocked look of the whole family, even Madame Yu who had just arrived in time to hear him. 'Food has been arranged and any stops on the way will be on hold for us as I sent a runner ahead.' He just stood looking out at the water wanting to get this whole thing underway.

'Sect Leader Jaing, every detail is in order, nothing was missed.' One of his servants showed him the check list.

'Yes, yes. Can we go now?' Wei Ying was getting antsy to be off so he could see Wen Ning and Wen Qing. For some reason, since the moment he decided to bring them into the Jiang Sect, he felt like something might be wrong. He needed to see them to be sure nothing was wrong.

Every step of the way, both Jiang FengMian and Jiang Cheng were shocked that anything they would have thought of, was ready waiting for them when they got to certain points. They let Wei Ying lead the way as he seemed to know where they were heading .... Even if he denied this when asked. He would just say he was following what someone else told him.

But one evening Jiang Cheng stood before Wei Ying with his arms crossed and a frown on his face, he had brought Wei Ying a distance from camp to talk with him.

'Just tell me the truth already. Who told you about this group of people?'

'Cheng, you should know that if you find a person who is willing to pass information to you on the understanding that you tell no one anything about them .... You must protect that source.'

'Yes I agree, but you have us out here following you so ....'

'Please, just trust me that the information I have is reliable. This group will bring your sect not just some of the best healers around, but utterly loyal people. Just because they have the name of Wen, does not mean they hold the beliefs of the main sect. I have it on good authority that they are not fighters but there is one who can protect their clan. Sometimes we need to look past the name of the person to find out who they truly are.'

'....' Jiang Cheng just stood there as his words settled in his mind.

'On a different subject ... I heard that we will be sent to Cloud Recesses for training when we are sixteen or seventeen.'

'Yes.'

'The GusuLan Sect is renowned for their manners, character, morals .... Oh, and let's not forget their beauty.'

'Yes, the three of us will go for training but not until you are seventeen.' Then he growled out the next words. 'You will not cause trouble ... right?'

'What kind of trouble could I ever cause?' He gave that famous innocent look he used even into his old age.

'I know you well enough to know you will only have to walk in and all hell will break loose.'

'I hear that Lan Qiren is incredibly strict but his nephew HanGuang-Jun is far stricter.'

'I have no idea ....'

'What about the clothes ... they wear white like they are going to a funeral and we will need to don the same white.'

'They also wear blue.'

'Is Lan XiChen as nice as I have heard him to be?'

'I've been informed he is as nice in manners as his brother is cold.'

'Cold? What do you mean?'

'HanGuang-Jun is said to never interact with others. He never talks. He never mingles with anyone. He will not tolerate even the smallest rule being broken.'

'Interesting ... lets head back and have our meal ... it's the last of the food YanLi sent with us so if we miss this time ... we have to wait until we are back at Lotus Pier.' He knew he had managed to turn Jiang Cheng's mind from what he was talking about to begin with, so with a smile he hurried to their meal. 'If there is only one bowl left when we return ... it's all mine.' He hurried ahead only to hear Jaing Cheng call him.

'It's mine; YanLi is my sister so I should have it.'

'Only if you beat me too it.' Wei Ying laughed happily as they ran.

Jiang FengMian had stood behind a bush and listened to his son and nephew talking and only after a few minutes did he realise what Wei Ying had done. With a smile he walked to the camp site knowing that Wei Ying had not just eluded his son's question ... but made Cheng forget the question all together. This was something he had noted since they were travelling together. Wei WuXian had often turned the conversation to a different direction more than a dozen times with almost everyone who talked to him. What is that young man avoiding so persistently?

It took them a week and five days in all for Wei Ying and the Jiang Sect to find the people they looked for. It would have been sooner but Wei Ying needed to make it look like he was only following directions from a third party.

He stopped his horse when he saw the Wen's who scrounged in the land that was dying around them. Dead plants they were trying to revive with what precious water they could spare. Children just sitting in the dirt playing with rocks like marbles, mothers holding new born babies and men looking totally defeated.

'Hello.'

'Hello my lord. Is there something we can do for you?' the elderly man bowed to him.

'Yes ... I am looking for the woman you all call granny.' FengMian said with a small smile.

'Oh, she is over there looking after the children.'

'Thank you ...'

'Excuse me; do you happen to know of a brother and sister called Wen Ning and Wen Quin?' Wei Ying jumped from his horse and walked over to the man.

'Oh yes young master.'

'Are they here?'

'Yes, they are healing a child at the moment. Everyone calls them for their healing even though they are not that much older than you.' He was as surprised as those with him at the look of utter relief that showed on his face. 'Do you know then young master?'

'... Um ... no ... I just heard some very good things about the siblings. It's good to know they are well.'

'Unfortunately ... we can not say that Wen Ning is in good health ... but he has not even tried to hurt anyone since he woke up in this state ...'

Wei Ying grabbed the mans arms. 'Where is he?' he used the voice he use to when he was teaching juniors and got an instant response. 'Tell me.'

All those who had travelled with him gaped at the utter authority in his voice. Even his uncle and Jiang Cheng looked at him.

'Over in that house.'

The moment he pointed to a particular shack, Wei Ying run at full speed and threw the door open.

'Wen Ning?' Wei Ying almost fell backward onto his tail but managed to hold the door handle to stop himself from landing on the ground. 'How is this possible?' to his horror, Wen Ning looked just the same as the last life ... a fierce corpse, just much younger. The black lines and pale skin tore his heart. 'No, this is not possible.' At that moment he really didn't care who heard his words. Something was very wrong.

'Young Master Wei.' Wen Ning raced over and gave him a hug like he did the last time they saw each other. 'I knew you would come. I told sister you would come for us before he came. Thank you.'

He quickly dragged his friend outside and to a short distance away from everyone so no one could hear them. 'Wen Ning ... how are you like this ... you can't be still like this. I haven't done ...'

'It's alright young master. I was given a choice. Arrive back here without any memories of anything but be like I use to be ... alive totally ... or have my memories and remain like this.' He grinned happily. 'I chose this. You need someone with the same memories as you, someone you can talk to without worrying about them finding out the truth.'

'But Wen Ning ... you really .... Always were impossibly wonderful.' He smiled sadly.

'It really is alright, I have a heartbeat and breath.' He stopped as Wei Ying checked his heart and that he breathed before he continued. 'I will age and grow up and live .... I just look really ....'

'I swear if you say cute I will knock you out.' He laughed with Wen Ning. 'I have convinced my uncle to take you and your clan over to Lotus Pier. You will all be under the umbrella of the Jiang Sect and the Wen Sect will never be able to get their hands on any of you.'

'A-Yuan will have his family?'

'Yes, if I have anything to do with it. Though I will admit to being sad at loosing a son.'
