15: Things have changed, where's Lan Zhan?
Wei Ying finally controlled his laughter at the thought of that man being misunderstood to this extent. 'Really, do you both only listen to whispered gossip of the people who failed to pass first time round?' He stood there and grinned at the pair. 'If the jade beauty had really taken out his heart, we would not be talking about him being scary, because he would be dead.'
'There you go again. Please, while we are here, will you not use that title?' Cheng growled menacingly and punched Wei WuXian's arm.
'Why? He is said to utterly deserve the title and what's the use of a title if it is not used?' Wei Ying was sure no one has worked out just when and where the title Jade Beauty had begun. If I told Lan Zhan the truth, would I get one of those adorable eye roll of his?
After seeing an odd look on Wei WuXian's face, Cheng looked to YanLi and let her see his worry. 'We are all going to be thrown out before the first month is over.'
'Never mind, let's keep going. I want to be settled before the dinner meal is served.' YanLi smiled gently at the pair and started walking up the mountain again.
Memories suddenly flashed in Wei Ying's mind, about his parents deaths when he was only five, well, almost but not quite five and for the next two years and a bit he lived on the streets. They were the worst years of his life. He was treated like either he was invisible or beaten by the people when he begged for food. However, the worst thing was the dogs. More than once a week he would have to fight them for what scraps he could get his hands on and every so often, more like every other week, the dogs thought he looked like a better meal than the scraps so attacked him. Surprisingly he lived through that period of his life, with the scars to prove it, only to be found by his mothers' brother who took him in and raised him like a son. Even though he knew in truth, he was there to be Cheng's right hand. To fight for him, and take a mortal wound for him to save his life.
He shook his head to get rid of all these memories of his past life as he was determined to just look forwards to this life's future.
'Don't get us lost up here A-Ying; we would be lost for days if you do.'
'YanLi, I would never do that. I have the map here ... um... somewhere.' He made a show of patting his robes as if looking for it. 'I'm sure I still have it somewhere.'
'Somewhere? The map is somewhere? Are you not using it to take us there?' Cheng growled at him.
'Sure, oh don't worry so much; I look at it now and then but .... Well ... I'm sure if we go the wrong way; all we need to do is back track and take another road. That way we will remember the way faster than using a map.'
'Wei WuXian ... I swear ....' He stopped when Wei Ying laughed happily.
'Cheng, please take a breath. I look at it for every turn we need to make.' He walked ahead with a smile. 'You are just too much fun to not mess with now and then.' He fluttered the map in front of him before returning it to his robe.
However, Wei Ying could walk these hills in his sleep, with his eyes closed, night or day, in the thickest fog or anyway anyone would ask him to do.
He wondered what people would say if he told them outright what he knew was coming.
Would they think he had something wrong with his brain and discard him?
He never intended to tell anyone either, as the only person who did know was Wen Ning and at the moment he was guarding Madame Yu on her trip to the Jin sect. To his surprise, she treated Wen Ning incredibly well and never abused him. She would talk kindly to him and about him. Wei Ying was very happy for that and he and Wen Quin had grown even stronger in healing while being with the Jaing Sect and both were more than happy.
'A-Xian.'
If he was to tell anyone else, they might think he was crazy and throw him out.
'Wei WuXian?'
He never really wanted to live on the streets again.
'Wei WuXian!'
So he just kept them all in his head and heart.
'A-Xian? Where are you heading?'
He realised they had called him more than once and he had gone far past the pair and was continuing on to the correct path without even glancing at the map he had been given. Most people would take a few months to a year with the map to remember the way. He quickly forced a large grin on his face before turning around with his hand on the back of his head. 'I honestly have no idea; I was so into my own thoughts, I didn't even know I had passed you both.' He laughed something he hoped sounded like his normal laugh.
'Just take out that map and find the right path!' Cheng almost yelled at him.
He quickly pulled out the map from the folds of his robe and pretended to be looking at it then the paths. 'Hey, will you look at that; I was on the right path anyway. Am I the luckiest person you have ever known or what?'
'Sure, do you think I will believe you just like that?' Cheng walked up and snatched the map only to verify Wei Ying was right. 'Well, you had to be right sooner or later ... even though it was pure dumb luck.'
'Hey, I know I prefer not to use a map and go by gut instinct, but ....'
'You really are so empty headed these days; I think you would have just kept going until you led us over the mountain.'
'Oh come on Cheng, I'm pretty sure I would have stopped before that because I'm just too lazy to go climbing that mountain without someone at my back with a sword.' He took the map back and placed it in his robes again grinned as the pair passed him and walked the path as he placed the map back in its place. When they were not looking at him, he let the smile drop and looked up at the top of the hill.
The mountain looked exactly the same as his last view of it. Oh, that's right, it was spring when we died and now it is early spring ... so from this moment on, I will do everything with all my heart and pray nothing goes wrong. However, the most important thing is ... bad things will still happen and I need to stop them all from happening. I need to protect them all. Can I drop hints to XiChen about a smile hiding the true face of a person and not be pulled in by it? Wen Ning and Wen Quin are at Louts pier so I know they will be fine as Wen Ning's fighting ability is even better than the last time.
Wei Ying again looked up at the mountain and thought of Cheng and YanLi's words. If they knew he would go up to the top of the mountain to his hearts content before he relived this life, would they laugh? He and his husband would often go up there for night hunting .... Or rather ... to spend some time alone together, even when they aged.
He loved that he and his husband had both lived to a ripe old age and yes, his everyday means everyday continued until the very end. Oh that man was his life and they lived that life to the fullest, but there were those missing years he wanted to give back to Lan Zhan, and those people he just had to save. He looked at his sisters back and knew he would do anything to save her, her husband, their parents and everyone. Jin Ling would grow up with both of his parents. A-Yuan, who had been born a few months ago, has both his sect and parents, and Wen Ning would not be known as the Ghost General and everyone who met him liked him. He smiled as he thought of Wen Ning having friends and running around with them laughing and playing. In fact, these days, Wen Ning and Xue Yang could give him a run for top ranking in pranking. But they were always done lightly and with great care.
Wei Ying sighed deeply and looked at the ground as he walked the path remembering the beautiful life he and Lan Zhan had shared. He had to change things this time around, many had already changed but there was still so much to do.
But what would he need to change to keep people alive to save them from that pair and the Wen's?
What would he be willing to give up to save those lives?
Could he do it all without delving into resentful energy again?
Sure he had that Mastered Demonic Cultivation sitting there waiting for him to use, but he never needed to use it. He had his original golden core and it was even stronger than the last time, as this time he did his cultivation meditation seriously and training everyday without fail.
'Wei WuXian!'
He literally jumped when Cheng yelled at him from a distance; they had gotten all the way to the bend while he just stood there. Just how long had he been standing there thinking? 'Yes, what's wrong with you now?'
'Will you stay with us? We need to arrive at the gate together.'
'Oh that's right; I have the invitation on me.' He jogged up and stood there looking at the pair before grinning. 'Well, what are you two waiting for? We really need to get to the gates before dinner time, I'm getting hungry.' He tried desperately to put on that happy-go-lucky expression but was not sure if he managed it.
The brother and sister looked at each other as Wei Ying walked ahead of them for another two hours until they got to the gate of the Cloud Recesses and then held out the invitation for the guard.
However before the guard took the invitation, a few GusuLan sect members hurried up to the entrance with a stretcher carrying a body covered to the neck. They spoke briefly with the guard then raced past the three visitors.
Wei Ying looked around with a deep frown ... Lan Zhan was meant to be here with them ... Where is he .... He was with those who brought that man back. He remembers that quite clearly now. Lan Zhan had stopped and talked with them before silencing him, but there had been something else that he could not remember at the moment.
'Young Master, is something wrong?' one of the men on the gates asked him at his frown.
'Hmn ... oh no ... I suppose not ... it's alright, but thank you for asking.' He handed over the invitation with a deep sigh and walked on.
If this has changed ...
What else has changed and what can change if I do the wrong thing?
Where is Lan Zhan?
Where is my husband!
'Keep an eye on him A-Cheng; I am more worried than ever.' YanLi watched Wei Ying walk into the Cloud Recesses.
'I will. He has changed so much ... and since we came into the GusuLan Sect lands, it looks like he is almost lost.'
'And he thinks he is hiding it from us.'
'Please, that idiot couldn't hide a rabbit in a stew.'
'Don't tell him that we have noticed something is wrong.'
'I won't. After we settle into our rooms, I will sneak out so we can talk to Sect Leader Lan. An extra opinion would be good.'
'Don't let him side track you this time.'
'...' Even though wanted to dispute what she insinuated, he didn't bother because the guy just had a way about him that drew him into what ever he was doing.
