First Sunday of Advent
and the swallows too
are celebrating.

They congregate
in the sky

in a disorganised jumble
         of dizzying movement
and bubbling joy.

first taste of home
after months of flying
and how do they celebrate?

in the best way swallows know --

they dance

like unmistakable darts
in the clouded dusk.

They divebomb:
wings tucked in
like a skydiver freefalling.

perhaps this is how swallows
worship.

perhaps this is how swallows
celebrate their Sunday service--

Each swoop and glide
          Each dip
                    and dive

a celebration of God's Glory
a celebration of God's Love.
