SIX

Carrington Hill

It was madness.

Everyone was running around in the main room as we all wanted to get ready and it was getting too much. I was usually good when it came to controlling a situation and I never let it get out of hand but in that moment and time I had to take a few minutes to think about what was truly going on.

Mia was half ready, the makeup artists that her mother and father paid for just like with everything else, were working on her look which I understood. They were doing the right thing. While they were getting my best friend sort of ready, Mia's sister, her close friend from university, Aiden's sister and I were in the hands of the hair dressers. There were four and thank god for them because it would have probably been a disaster if we didn't have them.

Mia's mum and Aiden's mum were in the room too; well, in and out really. They were between the room all the girls were and the room where all the boys were. They just wanted to see anything and everything plus Linda was a control freak, kind of like I was, so she had to make sure that things went smoothly.

But little did she know that by running around she caused more stress not just on me or the other people in the rooms, but mainly for her own daughter.

I could clearly tell Mia was on the edge, her mum constantly asking her questions ended up being the worst thing she could have possibly done in that time. So, when she suddenly got a call that she had to take and left the room, it was like as if the whole room had the chance to take a deep breath.

"How you holding up?" I asked Mia once the hair dresser was done with my hair. She simply curled it then put some kind of hairspray in it that would keep my locks in place and put my flower crown on me securely as well.

"God, Carr, my mum is literally stepping on each and every one of my nerves," she let a frustrated sigh out as her head was popped back while her makeup was getting done. "My mum is a control freak and so are you, but at this moment and time I would rather have you run things and not her. She's just too much for me right now."

"Do you want me to talk to her when she's done with that phone call?" I asked her with a light chuckle. "I'm not going to lie, she is pretty hyped up but I get it. Her little but oldest daughter is getting married."

"Yes, please, if you can tell her to back off a little bit, that would be great," she laughed and I joined her as I nodded even though she couldn't see that.

Now let's not think that she hated her mother or that she was ungrateful because Mia was everything but that. Actually, she loved her mother and father to pieces but they had the tendency to go nuts. They always wanted to make sure that whatever event they were a part of, or whatever they were doing, was master class and everyone would talk about it but could never top it.

They were hungry for success which I understood. I wanted to be as successful as I could be doing whatever I chose to do later in life or even now. But I do have to agree that Linda and Max were a bit too overboard sometimes.

And so like my friend asked me to or more so agreed to, I talked to her mother. I told her to take a deep breath and sit down for a few minutes. I had a good relationship with Linda; she treated me as if I was hers which I appreciated very much. To be fair, Mia's whole family acted like I was one of them and I'm not exaggerating because Linda's mum wanted to sit next to me on the plane from London to here. I didn't mind, Mia's grandmother was one of the funniest women I have met so we had a good time on our journey. I'm pretty sure we pissed quite a lot of passengers off as we laughed so much.

Once Linda was back to normal, which wasn't so different from what she had been like ever since we started getting ready, we went back into the room. And it still felt like how it was when Linda went out to take the phone call which just showed that her hype-ness was turned off a slight bit. She was still buzzing, however.

I was fully ready and so were the other bridesmaids so to stay out of everyone's busy doings, we just sat to the side. Mia was getting her hair done this time around so she was still kept entertained.

Soon enough my attention was drawn to my phone which was lying next to me on the grey couch. I was connected to the resort's Wi-Fi so I wasn't surprised to see an incoming FaceTime audio call but when it came from an unknown number I couldn't help but let my eyebrows furrow.

Not thinking too much into it, I accepted the call and put the phone close to my ear.

"Hi, this is Carrington-,"

"Hi, I know," I heard a very familiar voice as I had been interrupted. A smile made its way onto my face as I realised it was Harry, my empty hand gripped my dress lightly as I stretched my legs out a bit and looked down on my lap. "How's it going over there?"

"It's going good, really good, actually," I told him while my grin widened. I found it kind of ridiculous how after knowing him for almost a full day he had this weird effect on me. "How are you doing? Are you stressed yet?"

"I'm great too and I'm not stressed," he answered. "I hope you don't mind that I asked Aiden for your number. I didn't have it but I wanted to talk so I thought why not."

"Yeah, that's fine, I don't mind," I told him as I looked up just to lock eyes with my best friend through the mirror. She had a cheeky side smirk on her face as one of her eyelids dropped into a wink and I sure as hell blushed. I didn't need to see it; I felt my cheeks go hot.

"You know what I just remembered?" he asked me and I muttered a low 'what' and let him continue talking. "You never showed me any dance moves so now I won't be able to impress them."

"Them?" I asked back laughing even though I knew who he referred to.

"Yes, them," he said it like that again and I once again laughed, probably a bit too loud. I felt like a teenage girl who finally had the chance to speak to her long lasting crush and whether that was a good thing or a bad thing, I didn't know. "We are going to have to improvise."

"Oh, really? And, how do you plan on doing that?" I questioned him and that got him humming loudly. "We should have planned out a whole choreography to leave everyone shocked."

"Well, I'm sorry, but you wanted to take pictures!"

"Don't you dare blame this one me, pal," I warned him, my voice full of the mixture of seriousness and playfulness.  "You were up for it just as much as I was."

"Well-," he didn't stop his sentence but just started laughing which confused me but I ended up chuckling too.

"Yes? I'm listening," I told him.

"Dunno, actually. I haven't a clue what I was going to say. I had nothing good to be honest."

"Right, well, like I said, I'm hoping you don't have two left legs or I'll be really, truly embarrassed for the both of us."

"Have some faith in me, pretty girl."

And I blushed again. The way those words rolled off his tongue, his deep and croaky yet soft and smooth voice got me all gushy and warm on the inside. I didn't know if he realised how big of an impact he already had on me but I was barely coping.

Everything and everyone looked breathtakingly good at the wedding ceremony. I kind of wished that I was the one getting married because I just loved the whole atmosphere and look so much but there was no time for my greedy ass to be thinking things like this.

My best friend got married to the love of her life and it was so freaking easy to tell how happy and in love she was. Aiden was the perfect reflection of hers considering that he seemed over the moon and in love as well and I just thought that was perfect.

Everything was perfect.

They were perfect on their own, for each other, the location, the design, the outfits, the guests. Literally everything. I felt like I was in a movie or a book where the main characters got married but it was even better than that.

It was Mia James and Aiden Parson's wedding.

And of course on top of that, Harry looked extremely handsome as well. He had the same outfit on as the other three groomsmen which consisted of a grey pair of trousers with black suspenders and a white shirt. The shirt was rolled up just a bit below their elbows and there was a white, creamish coloured rose, just what Mia had in her hands, attached to the suspenders on the left side. They were all wearing sunglasses which of course they took off for the ceremony and put it in their trousers.

But to just specifically talk about Harry, I thought he was the most attractive out of everyone. The way he was smiling, standing, looking around and even breathing done things to me and it fully captured my attention. Whenever we would lock eyes, both of us had to hold our laughter back, especially when that one loose strand of hair kept falling on to his forehead, no matter how many times he pushed it back. It was entertaining, but also bloody sexy and I was sure he knew what he was doing not just to me, but everyone else.

Later on, with a cocktail in my hands I was just looking around what kind of little snacks they had out on the table when I felt someone's hands around my waist. The signature smell and low chuckle gave his identity away while also caused my body to be covered in goosebumps.

"Are you already eating?" he asked me laughing and I just shrugged my shoulders. I looked at him for a quick second, just to see how he was pushing his hair back again and that made me chuckle. "Don't even get me started."

"I haven't said anything, Jesus," I told him as I bit into my lower lip to stop my laughing. My focus was quickly moved from the table and plates to Harry when he slid my flower crown on my head a bit more up so it wasn't crooked. Or I'm guessing it wasn't. "Why didn't you boys have a flower crown?"

"Good question, I'm gonna have to go and ask Aiden about that," he said in a serious but playful tone, a smile painted on his irresistible looking lips. "When I saw you and the other girls wear it I got so jealous I wanted to walk out."

"Hold this," I gave him my glass which he took from me so I could get my crown off. He looked at me curiously while I smoothed my hair back down so I didn't have any bits sticking out then I placed my headwear on his head. "There you go, you look pretty now too."

"Take a picture, will you?" he shoved his phone in my hand as he posed. He put the straw that was in my drink in his mouth with his fingers around it, and pulled a face as well. "Take more than one, please, darling," he said with a posh accent, pronouncing the last word so weirdly that I couldn't help but laugh at his mocking tone. I knew for a fact he was taking the piss out of someone.

He kept his eyes closed on most of them, showing his, well, my flower crown off the best he could. I could tell he was just messing around and he didn't want to take a normal one. He enjoyed himself too much.

"Excuse me, miss," I heard a woman talk to me from beside me so I looked at her with a slight smile on my face. "I'm just here to take some pictures for the wedding album if that's okay, my name is Lily."

"Of me?" I asked back curiously. My eyes travelled around a bit as I tried to find my best friend who was conversing with someone. Soon enough, she looked at me and I swear I saw her wink. "Um, sure, of course," I said.

"Great," she smiled. "Sir? Excuse me, could you please stand next to-,"

"Carrington," I helped her out.

"Yes, thank you," she said and before she could have asked Harry again he was already standing next to me. "Could you possibly put the flower crown back on Carrington, please?"

"Sure," Harry said and as he was lifting off the crown of his head, the flash already went off. That didn't stop Harry and when I thought about it, I knew she was taking candids of us which I appreciated and I was sure to get her contact to be able to get the pictures later on.

Once I got my crown back, we took a few pictures – funny ones, normal ones, singular ones and later on more and more people joined in on our little photoshoot. Lily took pictures of just the boys and then just of us bridesmaids then bridesmaids and groomsmen together. Mia found her way over to us as well so we could take pictures together too which I was very excited about. There were shots of me and her, me, her and Harry, her and all the boys, her and all the girls and a big one as well. Aiden popped in the pictures too and he got the same ones done that Mia did so we spent about an hour just messing around, getting pictures done.

But it was fun and I was so ready to see how they all turned out.

The party started later on and once everyone got hungry, we all sat down along the massive table to get our bellies filled. Me being the maid of honour I sat on Mia's side and Harry was sitting on Aiden's side so we were ages away from each other. And although I already missed him, I had the chance to chat a bit with the bridesmaid girlies which was really fun and I enjoyed myself.

"Alright, I guess it is my time to catch everyone's attention for the first and last time tonight," I started off as I stood up from my chair and just as I said I got everyone's focus on me. "So, my name is Carrington Hill, also known as the girl whose best friend got married today, Mia James. Or should I say Mia Parson? Because I mean a guy called Aiden Parson took my best friend from me."

Some people laughed in the room which made me feel a bit more at ease. I was nervous to do my speech but I knew that I had to because I was the maid of honour and that's what they do, right?

"So, I've known Mia for almost four years which is absolutely ridiculous as it feels like it's been much, much longer," I said with a smile on my face. "We met during our uni times once we got put in the same student accommodation and to be quite honest, that was one of the best days of my life. Our friendship is kind of a miracle, you know?

As we all know events like these, cost an absolute fortune especially if it's planned to happen in a place like Hawaii. It is also a lot of hassle – good kind of hassle though, so no need to pull faces. It takes time and energy to make sure everything turns out perfectly and that there is always a plan B in case anything goes south. So far, everything seems to be going good.

Four parents in particular had done their very best to ensure that today's fantasy can come to life. They have worked very hard alongside the groom and the bride to not only take off the work of their children but to also make sure that everyone has a great time and goes home with an unforgettable experience. Therefore, I would love for you all to give it up for Linda and Max James and Brittany and Thomas Parson as a way of showing appreciation for everything they have sacrificed in order to make this event happen tonight."

This got everyone clapping along with me as well. I took a quick sip of my bubbly champagne to get my throat a bit moister since it was all dried up from the talking. Not to mention the fact that I knew people were staring into my very soul and that didn't help my shy arse at all.

"So, what I'm sure you all would love to hear about is something funny that happened to Mia once in her lifetime. I have known her for quite some time now so I can proudly say we have shared some, well, fun moments together. Although what we find funny is usually cringey and annoying for most people. Oh, wait, actually, you lot might find this funny," I said with a huge grin on my face. "This one summer we decided to go to Paris for a short weekend and so we did. We even fitted Disneyland into half a day which is a miracle really. But, thinking back to it now, we haven't really visited all the attractions within the theme park because after spending about two to three hours in there, Mia James, pardon me, Mia Parson decided it was too hot and so she fell into the fountain. It was the funniest thing ever and we couldn't stop laughing for absolute weeks.

Now, Aiden Parson. The lad who sat at my table in maths all the way back in high school and did not let me have a little quiet time. We never really got along, always had some sort of argument between us, but it was okay because we are good now, right, pal?" I asked as I looked to his direction. He put his thumbs up to show yes and I carried on. "Although we still bicker sometimes I approve of you. You are a nice lad, right for my best friend, so I'm glad you found her and we are here today. I might not have been there when you two first met and so I didn't really get a good glimpse into what you were like as a boyfriend to her in the first couple of months, years even, but whenever she talked or still to this day, talks about you, it makes my heart crazy happy to just know you treat her right; the way she's supposed to be. I think you's make a pretty nice couple, complimenting each other and balancing each other out no matter the situation."

While I was talking about them as a couple, a small slide show started to play on the screen of the TV which was showing information, pictures and stuff like that throughout the whole event.

In that moment, there were pictures of the couple on their own, with me, with their families. It just basically showed some of their happiest and most memorable moments together.

"As you can see on the slideshow, they were pretty much made for each other and I'm glad that I get to celebrate this amazing evening at the wedding of my best friend. So, to just cut off my rambling which I tend to do, especially when I'm nervous, here's the question that probably everyone was waiting for," I said with a small sigh escaping from my lips. Come on Carrington, you can finish this off now. "Who's ready to party?"

And with that people started to clap and cheer and I just downed the champagne that was left in my glass and sat back down. Thank godness that's over and done with.
