SEVENTY SEVEN
Harry Styles
Luck was definitely on my side that day. Everything went as I planned it, more so hoped that would happen. Mr and Mrs Hill were in the venue with Lesley and Harrison, Vlad was there too. Mia, Aiden and Liam were a complete and utter surprise, but I didn't mind it. I was really happy they could come as well.
I was nervous. Like, really fucking nervous.
Not just because it was something people usually get nervous about but also because I was going all out. Like, massively all out.
The whole fucking world was going to see it and I could only hope and pray that it wasn't going to be a bloody mess. And I didn't even have much time left to do that.
No one fucking told me the honour dance was a few minutes long so when I heard the music fading and the one starting, Alex and Carrington were already bowing. And then I had to fucking sprint. As quietly and as non-attention-catchingly as I could.
Alex literally fucked off as soon as he let Carrington go on her own to spin around and I wasn't even sure how close I should go behind her. I mean I did stop at some point and got right down on one knee, my hand shoved through my hair that fell on my sweaty forehead and licked my lips.
I was nervous. Like, really fucking nervous.
Carrington turned around then and her face gave back nothing but pure shock. Shock that I couldn't exactly understand. Was she happy? Was she sad? Was she just... shocked?
I went with the third one when she put her hands in front of her mouth. I swear even her eyes teared up. Or it might have been just mine. I'm not sure.
"Hey," I heard a quiet voice from my right so I snapped my head to that side. Alex stood there with a mic in his hand. Right. Completely forgot about that.
Once it was in my hand, I checked if it was on. And then I knew I had to get on with it. But I kind of froze.
"Uh, hello, everyone," I laughed like the nervous wreck I was. "So, Carrington. First of all, congratulations, my love. I knew you could do it. I always have faith in you, no matter what we're talking about. But, uh, right now I'm just here to pretty much ask you to spend the rest of your life with me. I thought long and hard about this and when I had most of the things under control, I just needed you to win. And you did just that. So, thank you for contributing to my plans and helping it to work out."
Laughter filled the room after my short ramble. I stopped so I could take a breath and calm down slightly. I didn't wish to make a fool out of myself in front of everyone... her family. My future family.
"I have no speech prepared whatsoever, I thought I'd be able to just talk on the spot but to be really honest, I'm kind of struggling. You look pretty darn amazing and it's-, you are taking my breath away. You have all day. You're just so stunning, you know? Inside and out. And I love you, as well. Like a lot. So this is why I'm making a fool out of myself right now. Because I love you. You already said that, idiot."
That made the audience laugh again, although it wasn't my intention to get that recation out of them. They weren't even meant to hear the last bits.
But I was nervous. Like, really fucking nervous.
"So, all I really have left to ask is one thing. Carrington Hill, my little champion, will you please save me from further embarrassing myself in front of everyone and marry me?"
I was kind of waiting for the dramatic pause between my question and her answer but there was nothing like that. I couldn't even get my words out fully before she ran towards me and wrapped her arms around my neck. My whole heart calmed down a little when I felt her close to me, engulfed in a tight hug with her sobbing in my neck.
"You're so silly I love you and of course I'll marry you. Yes. What the hell?" she pulled back with black tears streaming down her face due to the amount of makeup around her eyes. It left a light streak on her skin as the foundation slightly came off with it.
She giggled as I grinned and slipped the ring on her right finger. Fuck, she was my fiancé now.
"Oh, my godness," she mumbled as her eyes were focused on the ring. The lights in the room and the diamonds or glitters or whatever on her dress made it shine gorgeously, it reflected onto her face a little. "Fuck, this is stunning," she spoke to me with her teary eyes looking right into mine.
I was standing now and so was she, my arms snuck around her waist and I spun us around while in a tight hug. I was so damn happy. I completely forgot we basically had a whole ass audience. I only realised when Carrington was back on her feet, the mic in her hand as she confirmed she said yes. I pulled her in for a kiss after, her lips tasted slightly salty and they were warm.
And then she was snatched from me. Alex, if I saw correctly, engulfed her in a hug as people were laughing, some still clapping. I seen some taking pictures whilst complete strangers – well, those who were standing next to the podium – walked over to us.
"Congrats man," one of the lads said, with a strong Australian accent. He gave me a one-armed hug then we shook hands and that went on with literally everyone who was on the stage.
I sensed the cameras clicking and recording the whole thing which made this whole proposal slightly public. I never wished to do it in front of everyone but it also seemed like the best idea. My thoughts were interrupted when my fiancé walked over to me, her hands on my cheeks as she pulled me in for a kiss. My lips curled into a smile as I placed my hands on her waist and pulled her as close to me as I could. The cheers filled my ear as our lips were connected, our legs taking us all over the place.
Eventually, we got off the stage and everything felt more private.
"Harry, this ring is so gorgeous," Carrington told me for the fiftieth time whilst she sat on my lap. There weren't many people around seeing as everyone went to get changed so they could go home or back to their hotels.
"Do you like it then, yeah?" I smiled at her, my eyes on her face as she looked at the ring. She lifted her gaze up to me, my head moved up a bit as well and closed my eyes when she leaned closer and pecked my lips.
"I love it. It's more than I even wanted or wished for," she rambled. "Fuck, I need to get changed. We need to get to the restaurant and everything."
Her family went back to the hotel where we were staying after everyone had the chance, mainly Eloise though, to check out the ring and congratulate us. We decided to go out for dinner, it was only around eight, to celebrate the victory and now the engagement, too. We took quite a lot of pictures as well, which I didn't mind at first, but quickly grew tired of it even though that's what people did around me most of the days at work.
The journey back to the hotel was quick and thankfully no one noticed us. I don't think many people knew I was in Spain, although after the engagement, I had a feeling it was going to spread like wild fire.
//
My eyes could barely look away from my girl as she sat next to me at the table. Her smile was contagious, her happiness lifted everyone's mood in the restaurant and her beauty... my god. She was the literal definition of beautiful. And gorgeous. And probably angel, too. Definitely happiness. My happiness, anyway.
She wore a royal blue coloured jumpsuit that had no straps and accentuated her body perfectly. It clung to her so nicely that my eyes were literally eating her up every second they travelled over her body. I knew it was wrong of me to let myself go seeing as her parents, her dad, was at the table, but for some reason it was really fucking hard to behave.
"Oh, godness, does Anne and Des know any of this?" Eloise asked suddenly in the middle of many different conversations going on. It was also mainly directed at me.
"Yes, they do," I nodded, smiling. "I talked to mum for a long time about this, if I'm being completely honest."
"And you didn't even bother to tell us?" she laughed which made me chuckle. So, maybe I did ask Mr Hill if I could marry his daughter who I guess let it slip and so Eloise knew about it, too. That's why she had no questions when I asked her if she could come to the championship. I knew this competition meant a lot to Carrington and I had to make sure her family was there, rooting for her.
"I thought it was better if you mums don't gossip about my plans," I replied which made her laugh again, this time Aaron listened to our conversation as well.
Speaking of him, he seemed to have warmed up to me a little... better. He didn't seem like he was out to kill me if I just appeared in his presence which I thought was good. Considering that he did really intimidate me from the start and I'm a twenty-five-year-old man for godness sake.
"Carrington, let me see your ring again, please," Eloise spoke to her daughter about literally the only thing that mattered to her. It was like her winning the championship was nothing because the engagement completely outshone it.
And that was not my plan.
I didn't want her hard work to stay hidden and overshadowed by a ring on her finger. Tonight's celebrations were not just about the damn ring I bought, it was about her and Alex winning. It was a big deal but I genuinely felt like it was all swept under the rug.
"Actually, how about we all have a drink to celebrate the fact that Carrington and Alex won the 2018 championship?" I said a bit louder than my actual speaking voice because I needed everyone's attention at the table. But I also didn't want to be rude. I felt Carrington look at me from the side, her brown eyes pierced through the skin of my cheek as I continued. "They pretty much out danced their lives and it was the most amazing thing to witness. Not to mention, they are still on their feet and up, so I say we all have a nice cocktail, yes? It's on me," I said as I looked around the table.
There were actually a lot of us. Her two brothers, her uncle, her parents, her best friend, Alex, Chloe, Julie and two of my best friends. Not that I minded. Wherever Carrington went and her family followed I knew it was always going to be a big thing. And I kind of loved that. Also sort of wished my family could have been there, but as I said before, this was mainly about Carrington and Alex. I knew we would eventually have an engagement party later some time.
It had to be around half eleven, maybe even twelve in the morning when we got back to the hotel. We had a great time at the restaurant, then later on at the bar section where apart from Harrison, Carrington, Chloe and I everyone was half way gone. It was pretty funny to witness Carrington's parents boozed, it definitely made me excited for our wedding. I mean, I just imagined all of her and all of my family together, completely drunk and I kind of wished it was happening tomorrow.
After we both showered, the clock already hit twelve forty-five and my body was literally useless. I just laid in bed, tired as fuck and slightly tipsy. And if I felt like that then I didn't even want to imagine what my fiancé must have gone through.
"What you said when mumsy wanted to see my ring was nice," she muttered, her voice deep and slow. It felt like it took everything in her to push those words out of her mouth.
"Oh, you mean when everyone completely ignored that you and Alex are champions and focused on your ring?" I asked back as I turned my body on its side, my head swallowed up by the pillow.
"Mhm."
"Yeah, I mean it was only right."
"I love you so much, you know."
"I do baby," I smiled at her, slightly hovering over her body as I rested my weight on my elbow. My index finger ran down the bridge of her nose which made her smile. It was a wide, happy grin, one that I loved very much. "I love you even more," I told her before I leaned down and kissed her soft lips.
"I was really surprised you asked me to marry you," she continued talking as if she hadn't done that all day today. I found it absolutely adorable that she wanted to talk to me about the engagement seeing as just us two didn't exactly have the chance to.
"I'm glad I could surprise you," I commented. "Was it alright? Did you like it? I actually was quite hesitant at first because I wasn't sure you wanted it done so publicly."
"No, I liked it," she smiled at me. Both of us were lying on our pillows, just looking at one another sleepily. "It was definitely different," she yawned with her hand in front of her mouth. The ring was right in front of my face then. Now that was going to take some getting use to. "You are so thoughtful, though. I wouldn't have thought of proposing to me at the championship."
"You proposing to yourself would be funny," I chuckled tiredly. And then she joined in and we were both just giggling, all tired and slightly tipsy. It was nice. I loved these late night, tired conversations between us, especially in that moment, because I have missed her. Up until this championship, she had no free time so I kind of hoped it'd change a little after this.
"I love this ring," she grinned at her finger, lifting her hand to admire the ring. She was literally obsessed with it and that made my heart swell. It was a gorgeous ring, I'll admit that, but nowhere near close to what my money could have gotten her. I did think of getting a massive diamond, something that would be so visible it would draw in everyone's attention but I decided against it. She wasn't into material things and it definitely wouldn't have suited her. The one I got was perfect. And she loved it, she was happy and that was all I hoped for.
"I'm really happy you do," I smiled contently. Life felt way too good to be true. "So, I was thinking we could throw an engagement party. Invite the lads and family, you know, little get together, everyone piss drunk. What do you say?"
"Oh my god, yes! Imagine all my Uncles together again! And maybe your uncles and stuff could come too! Oh my god!" she spoke excitedly as she shot up in bed. I laughed as she leaned back on her elbow and hovered over me, her eyes literally sparkled, her smile wide which caused me to grin back at her. "Our families can finally meet! Like, properly!"
"We just need a date and a location."
"Ugh, I'm gonna search somewhere now," she said as she rolled over to her bedside table where her phone was then grabbed it. "This is so exciting, fuck."
"Baby, it's late and you've been up for hours," I cuddled to her side, my face hidden in her neck. She smelt like her usual shower gel, fresh and soft. Her skin was so soft and smooth it literally begged for my lips to kiss it. I peered up at her phone screen just to catch her taking pictures of us. "You are so sly, you know that?"
"Smile," she said in a high-pitched voice as she squeezed her eyes together and grinned at the camera. I pressed my lips on her cheek for one photo, then grinned like her on the other. She lifted her hand for one to show her ring off and then I pointed to it on the next one. "Okay that's enough. I need to save space for new memes I find on twitter."
"Are memes the funny pictures you always text me?"
"Yes," she laughed. "I have new ones of you."
"I'm not even surprised," I commented with my lips against her shoulder then. I pressed a kiss on her skin before I spoke again. "Show me them."
"With pleasure," she replied. "I fucking love this one," she laughed loudly so I had to ssh her a little.
"Oh my god, this one is of Niall but like it's funny as hell," she showed me one of my best mate and I just chuckled. "I'll have to show him this picture once."
"Ugh, you look so pretty on this one but it's also a great meme because it's one of those when you know the truth but people are trying to bullshit you, yano?"
I listened to her ramble on about funny pictures of me, sometimes of Zayn and Liam, too. It made me smile and also fall a little more in love with her. She was so easy to amuse and stuff like this made her laugh more than jokes. I was so in love with her and I wasn't even able to express that to her because it was impossible. I could only hope and pray that she knew she meant the world to me and as long as I had the capability to make her happy, I was pretty content with life.
