FORTY THREE
Harry Styles
Now it was a week later since the birthday party of Lesley, the first of September. The thought of autumn made me shiver and also feel excited. Shiver, because I loved the summer weather and I didn't exactly miss the cold. Excited, because it meant show season and that meant more money. Not that I struggled, but it was nice knowing that all the work and time I put into my career is paying off nicely for me and my bank account. Plus, it's not like anyone does anything for free these days. Especially not if it's their bloody job.
I had just finished a meeting with my team regarding the fashion show which was coming up. It was for Burberry who I loved working with however the way they have been acting recently sort of put me off of wanting to walk for them. They kept putting off and on the show, changing the dates twenty five times before they settled on the 4th of September which is literally in three days. It put me on edge, the simple thought of the fashion being so close and getting told about it so late. My first fitting with them was back in July and it's now the beginning of September. I could barely get my head around how unorganised they have been this time around.
So after the stressful meeting I was off to a coffee shop where I usually go to if I can't be arsed to make my own. Then, when I had my black coffee in my hands, well, in the cup holder of my car, I just drove around the city with nowhere in mind. It was liberating to be able to just do what I wanted, the way I wanted to do it.
My peaceful time was interrupted when my phone begun to ring and a picture of my older sister popped up on the screen alongside her name on the top. I accepted the call with the button on the steering wheel so she was on loudspeaker.
"Hey, what's up?" I asked right away.
"Hi, little bro," she greeted me back, her smile was literally audible through her voice. She was never really sad which she always justified by saying why be sad when there are so many reasons to be happy? "Just calling to let you know that we're coming to your show on Monday. The email came through literally two minutes ago that we're invited so we'll be there."
"That's great, okay, I'm glad you can make it," I smiled. I missed my sister, it had been a while since I have seen her even though we lived in the same city yet in different parts. When I really thought about it, London was massive. "I miss my little nephew, so it's going to be amazing to see him for a bit."
"About that," she sighed. I raised my eyebrows as I waited for her to carry on. "Is there any time you're free? Like, when you're not working or spending time with that girlfriend of yours who I have yet to meet."
My cheeks felt hot as if they were on literal fire and the fact that I blushed over the thought of my girlfriend, made me blush even more.
"Well," I started off and I heard my sister laugh. "I'm free most of the time."
"Sure, that's why I never hear from you," she sassed me out like she always does. Okay, she blamed me for a reason because I haven't exactly contacted her recently.
"Well, I'm sorry."
"Well, well, well," she mocked me as she changed her voice to sound deeper. I laughed. "That's all you say, is there anything else you would like to tell me or is that all you have?"
"Listen, I don't know when I'm free or if I'm free any time soon. Right now, I am. What is it that you want?"
"Michal and I haven't been out for ages and I love my son to death but we literally can't go anywhere with him these days. I was wondering, we were wondering if you could babysit him sometime?" o there it is.
"Was that so hard to ask of me?" I questioned her and I had to hold my laughter back. "Do you seriously think that my nephew is burden for me? I love that little man more than myself, I would watch him forever if I had to."
"Right, sure," she said and sounded a bit more relaxed. She even let a chuckle out at the end. "It's just, he hasn't seen you in a while. It was all the way back in January when you last saw each other and I don't know-,"
"Gemma, stop," I said. "Stop that rubbish. I'm sure he remembers me and we'll be fine. This won't be the first time he'll be alone with me. And are you seriously nervous about leaving your kid with me? Your brother? Nice to know that you trust me," I said teasingly at the end.
I knew she trusted me, I never doubted that, but I was not one to miss out on a chance of messing with my sister.
"I trust you, of course I do," Gemma replied with a sigh out of her lips. "It's just a motherly thing I suppose."
"Right, so when are you and your husband-,"
"Fiancé," she corrected me mid-sentence.
"Planning on going out?" I asked my question anyway as I ignored her completely. They literally been engaged for the longest time, well, for me it seemed like that anyway, and I always looked at them as husband and wife. It was natural.
"We haven't decided yet, we wanted to ask you first since you're the one who we have to work around. Your schedule is messy and you're never free so we haven't made any reservations or anything just in case."
"Okay, well," I sighed. My thumbs drummed along the steering wheel as I held it in my hands, my lips puckered as I thought long and hard. "How about after the show? Ethan could spend the night in case you two want some, you know," I chuckled. "Alone time or whatever."
"Wow, you're awkward," she laughed in the phone and I joined. My older sister having sex was not something I liked to think about. "Anyway, so we could go to your show and then Ethan could spend the night with you?"
"Sure," I smiled and nodded even though Gemma couldn't see me. "You can come get him Tuesday night or something."
"Are you sure?" she asked. "A whole day after him spending the night would be okay?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure it wouldn't be too much?"
"Gemma."
"Yes?"
"Calm down, sister, you're overthinking this. Everything will be fine and nothing will be too much."
"Alright, okay, I'm just... ugh, nevermind."
"I get that you're nervous but he'll be safe and sound with me. He stayed with me before, when he was a little baby, and nothing happened to him," I smiled at the memory of my nephew being a little bug. He was the cutest. "Plus, I think my girl might stay over as well."
"Your girl?" she asked back, her tone was on the side of being cheeky and I didn't have to see her face to know she was smirking.
"Yes, my girl," I said back. I loved knowing I was able to call her that. "Anyway, she might stay over and she'll be plus help. She's amazing with kids, I mean she spends a lot of time with her family and she has a few cousins and stuff so I've seen her around them."
"So you met her whole family, huh?"
"Sure have," I replied. "They're fun, really nice people."
"When is she meeting ours?" she asked. "I mean I guess you two are serious if you already met her family."
"Yeah I would say we are," I hummed. "I love her to bits."
"So you dropped the L bomb as well," she sighed and sounded disappointed. I furrowed my eyebrows at that. "Can't believe I haven't even met her yet."
"You'll meet her next week, alright?"
"Sure, sounds like a plan."
"I mean I have yet to ask her if she wants to come to my show or if she's free because I haven't mentioned it to her yet."
"Get going then because I want to meet her on Monday," she said seriously. I made a mental note of calling Carrington as soon as it was possible then carried on with the conversation I was having with my sister.
By the time we hung up, I finished my coffee and been to the petrol station to fill up my car then got home as well. I grabbed the pot of hummus I had in my fridge with some carrot sticks before I sat on my couch and turned the TV on. I decided on having a lazy afternoon because the meeting drained me too much to do anything else but lay around.
An unplanned nap planned itself in my schedule which I only realised once I woke up. It was seven in the evening when I checked the time on my phone, a missed FaceTime call and many other messages piled up on the screen. The FaceTime was from my girlfriend while the messages were split between her and my mates.
Within those texts, Zayn and Liam were just asking if I was doing anything tonight but that was hours ago so I assumed they just went about their days without me. I haven't seen them in forever and I honestly missed them a lot.
I decided to text back, asking if they wanted to come over for a few drinks and a movie or something. I wasn't in the mood to go out but I wouldn't have minded having some whisky with them inside. The thought of a club packed with drunken people with sweaty bodies was not somewhere I wanted to be.
Zayn Malik: pal I missed you so much! I swear you haven't been chatting to us in forever!
The message popped right up on my screen and it shook me out of my wondering haze. I smiled at the text.
Harry: I know I'm sorry I've been all over the place haha
Liam Payne: oh look at this! Both of you are here
Zayn Malik: so are we going over to yours or what?
Harry: sure come on over I'm bored as fuck
Liam Payne: cool I'm in central right now but I'll be there in half an hour
Liam Payne: is that fine?
Harry: sure mate don't worry about it too much
Zayn Malik: I literally just drove past your area when I saw the message
Zayn Malik: I'm coming back though I'm not missing out on a lads night
So while both of my mates were on their way to my house I thought I'd call my girlfriend back. She didn't pick up right away so I called again and got lucky.
"Hey, gorgeous," she said and her smile widened right away. "Aw, your hair," she giggled. "Have you just woken up?"
"Hey, yeah, sort of," I answered as I actually looked at myself in the little view thing and saw the mess that was my hair. "How are you? I miss you so much."
"I miss you too and I'm alright," she answered. "Twitter is full with the news of the Burberry show finally being finalised. Are you walking the stage for them?"
"Have they already announced it?" I asked her surprised. "Yes, I am attending and I was wondering if you'd like to come?"
"It's on Monday isn't it?" she asked as she bit down on her fingernail. I scrunched up my nose at her doings but she didn't seem to notice. "Well, I have a class on Tuesday so I don't know if I could stay the night."
"Oh," I said a bit disappointedly. I wanted her to spend the following day with me and my nephew but I didn't tell her that just yet.
"Yeah, I'm sorry bub," she pouted. "But that doesn't mean I can't watch you on Monday, right?"
"I suppose I was just hoping you'd be able to stay."
"I know I wish I could," she sighed. "But I'll still get to see you on Monday, right?"
"Yes, you will," I smiled and I got excited as I thought about seeing her soon. Three more sleeps and I'll be able to hug her. "So, uh, you'll also be seeing my sister."
"Will I actually?" she asked me with her voice thickly laced with surprise. Okay, so she took it better than I thought she would. "I mean, uh, that's great, right?"
"You will and yes I suppose it's great," I laughed. "I had a chat with my sister today and she said that she'll be coming to my show. I'll also be babysitting my nephew after for the night and the day after."
"Aw, she has a son? How old is he?"
"He turned three this year actually," I told her with a smile on my lips. "He's the cutest baby ever and I love him to death. I can't wait to spend some time with him. I was kind of hoping you'd be able to stay as well so that we could've looked after him together but there's always another time."
"Oh my Gosh he's still a little baby then!" she gushed over Ethan and it made me chuckle. "I really wish I could stay with you now."
"Only cuz of my nephew, right?"
"Of course," she scoffed. "What did you think why would I want to stay with you?"
"True, I don't know what I was thinking, to be honest," I said seriously. And then we both ended up laughing. "Ah, my mates are coming over in a bit, so I'm not sure when I'll be able to talk again. I mean I'm probably gonna be available but I haven't seen them in a while."
"That's fine, Haz, go and have fun," she said sweetly, her lips pulled into the prettiest smile. I had no idea what I did to deserve her. "My dad and brother are going back to America tonight so I should go now because we're going Nando's as their leaving meal. Sort of. I think it's unnecessary but free food," she laughed.
"You would say that, wouldn't you?" I replied. "I don't think I've realised since we started dating how much you actually eat. Not that it's a problem."
"Ugh, my mum just messages me on Messenger saying I better get ready if I wanna go. So I better do that," she said. "Okay, well, I'll talk to you whenever you decide to reply, I guess."
"Oh, don't be like that, you know I'll always get back to you," I laughed as I rolled my eyes. Then I heard the bell go off which meant that someone wanted to come in the building and I was the lucky one to get the ring. "I think that's either Liam or Zayn."
"Go let them in then, I need to go anyway," she said. "I love you bub."
"I love you more," I said even though I was not about to play that cliché game that I knew was coming.
"I would fight you on that but I'll be left home if I don't hurry up. So bye," she said as her two fingers made a peace sign but the back of her hand faced me as she swore at me. I didn't even have time to reply or anything because she disappeared and I could only laugh as I walked over to the box where there was a screen and buttons.
I saw Zayn's side profile on the screen, his black hair was covering his forehead and he had a grey shirt on. I pressed the 'accept' button which made a noise so he knew I was there.
"Hey man, let me in, please," he said and let out a little chuckle at the end. His strong accent sounded familiar to my ears which I actually haven't heard in absolute weeks.
"Sure thing, pretty boy," I said smugly as I let him through the doors.
Once he got to my floor, I heard him knock so I let him in. We greeted each other with a brotherly hug then he kicked his shoes off and threw himself on the couch in front of the TV.
"How you been, Hazza?" he asked me as he ran his hands through his hair. I laughed and then let out a long and loud sigh. "Oh, God, what is it?"
"Nothing, I've been good. Amazing, actually," I laughed. "I love my girl, man. She's the best. I just finished talking to her and I literally can't get her out of my head. Is that mental?"
"For you, it is mental. You haven't had a girl since whatever the fuck her name was. I'm proud of you, brother!" he laughed as he pushed my shoulder with his fist.
"Yeah she makes me go crazy, mate," I laughed as I stared ahead and a grin grew on my lips again. "She's so amazing."
"You are fucking whipped, pal," Zayn laughed and he didn't even stop for a few seconds. "Tell me more about her then. I saw pictures of you two, she's a hot one, mate."
"She's beautiful, isn't she," I sighed and let my head fall back on the back rest of the couch. "We haven't met up in so long and I have so much to tell you. And Liam as well. Thinking about it now, I got a girlfriend on my own. Like, I didn't once go to you's for help or anything."
"Did you just say 'you's'?" he laughed. "What the hell."
"Carrington says you's all the time, I guess it rubbed off on me," I mumbled. Maybe I am fucking whipped. Not that I didn't know that already.
"Here's Liam," Zayn said as the bell went off again.
He got up and let him in while I pressed the side button on my phone and that lit up. First I only wanted to see the time but then I was faced with my gorgeous girlfriend and I ended up staring at my screen until it darkened again.
"Oh Gosh, you need help, don't you?" Zayn laughed. I snapped my head up in his direction and furrowed my eyebrows.
"I was just checking the time," I explained.
"Sure thing, lover boy," he winked and sat down again.
I huffed and prepared myself for Liam to take the piss as soon as the girlfriend topic will arise.
