Spiderwebs
'And now I'm stuck in the
The web you're spinning
You've got me for your prey' ~
No doubt
"Who took the Bomp from the Bompalompalomp? Who took the Ram from the Ramalamadingdong?" Gwen sang, dancing around her room as she prepared herself for homecoming. She loved music like this, it was usually what they played in band practice and tonight, they'd finally landed a gig. Well, sort of. The Emmjays managed to steal the stage for one song, a perfect opportunity to kick of their musical side-job.
After a lot of deciding, she'd convinced the group to play Spider-Webs by no doubt, it was reasonable considering the spider duo had saved some of their classmates. Gwen also thought it symbolised how hard it was being a vigilante and hoped it would cheer Peter up.
Slowly, she added the finishing touches to her eyeliner and purses her lips to place some lipgloss. Finally, she was ready. However, she'd never felt so ill prepared. She was going to preform in front of her whole school year, no doubt Any would get nervous too, so she'd have to do the intro. Instead of wallowing in worry, she picked up a tote bag and packed her drumsticks, soon realising that the song she'd chose to play was a little ironic. So, she quickly grabbed her suit and stuffed it into the bottom of her bag, it was going in her locker soon anyways.
"Gwen." Her mother called from the living room. "Come on, we need to take pictures." She forced the teen to scowl, it was likely this picture would turn into a lock screen or get framed. At least she was wearing a dress she enjoyed.
The homecoming theme was 80s, however, no one was going to fully commit to the theme so Gwen also took a minimalistic approach. She wore a short evergreen dress that had short shoulder straps and a corset hem at the back, it also possessed a bombardment of green flowers on the torso and flowed out after her waist. To top it off, she wore her turquoise converse, she couldn't exactly drum very well in heels, and if anyone realised they were identical to the converse she wore in her spidey suit, then she'd make an excuse.
"I'm coming." She replied and made her way towards the door, dropping her bag onto the back of a chair.
"I want everyone in, okay?" Helen declared and set the camera on timer. Resulting in a combined panic to get prepared in time for the flash.
"Cheese." George smiled, the younger siblings giggling at his cliche dad moment.
Soon enough, the flash went off and Helen checked her phone. "Okay, Gwen by herself." She then instructed and the family scattered out of the way. The blonde flashes a smile and felt her face go numb while awaiting Helen to click the button, until eventually she did. "You're growing up so fast." She smiled at the screen.
"Thank you?" She replied in a questioning tone.
"Good luck with the band by the way, you'll do great." The woman assured and George Stacy guided Gwen out of the house after she'd collected her bag. Tonight was her night to act like an actual teenager, of course, bringing her suit contradicted that fact, but it still remained.
"Where's our first stop?" George asked.
"MJs." Gwen informed and proceeded to tell him the address. Shortly arriving to see Michelle.
As she approached the car, Gwen noticed that she didn't look as gloomy as usual, the homecoming was really affecting people. She was wearing a formal dress that faded into bright yellow flowers and had a small white collar bordering the dress. Her hair was tied up into her usual bun and to top of her look, she wore some combat boots, heels were never her style anyways.
"Oh, I know you. You were on the academic decathlon team." George Stacy stated as the teen fastened her seatbelt.
"I still am." Michelle corrected him.
"I don't know what happened to real sports. I used to be on the football team when I was younger, I got to go to Washington too." The police captain bragged.
"We go to Midtown Tech, majority of us are nerds." Gwen rolled her eyes while imagining what a great football player she could be.
Thanks to MJ's house being remarkably close to the school, they made it in no time, managing to finally escape from the mildly awkward atmosphere of the car. As soon as a conversation about protesting was brought up, Gwen realised the terrible combination of people she'd put together, both headstrong and stubborn when it came to their beliefs. Thankfully, they all made it out alive.
"Text me when you need picking up Gweny." George waved and set off for home.
"Will do." Gwen yelled, finally having a sense of relief.
"What's in the bag?" Michelle looked over her shoulders to view the contents, something Gwen could not allow.
"Uh, it's just my band stuff, and some shoes." She stuttered and covered the bag. "My band are playing a song tonight, hopefully kickstart our hobby." The blonde trailed off, receiving a skeptical look from MJ. "You've gotten really nosy lately."
"Only because you've been secretive." She retorted calmly. "Anyways, I'm going to get some appetisers and find someone to annoy while you set up."
"Right..." Gwen sighed and mentally prepared herself. "You've got this Gwen. You've done things that required way more stress than this."
Before she was needed on stage, she got rid of her bag and hid it in her locker, dreading the feeling of being without her suit. That's when she saw her band, they were all as nervous as her, especially Gloria, which was slightly unusual.
"Gwen!" Gloria ran and hugged her.
"Thank god, I was scared you weren't gonna show." Any said, for once not being so harsh.
"Oh my god! You look amazing!" Betty complimented, which Gwen returned with a simple 'you too'. "I know I usually talk to the whole school, but is anyone else weirdly nervous?" Betty asked.
"I know right, hardly anyone even knows we're a band." Gloria agreed. "This could make or break us."
"And is Spider-Webs even a strong song?" Any questioned.
"It's perfect, because Ghost-Spider and Spider-Man saved our whole Academic Decathlon team. Plus it's by 'No Doubt' so don't doubt it." The hero argued, playing with her words slightly.
"Fine." Any finally agreed. "Who's introducing us?"
"You're the lead singer?" Gloria suggested, but she was overestimating Any's confidence.
"No way. I can sing, but I am not doing that, what if I stutter?" The girl worried.
"I'll do it." Gwen sacrificed, the other girls giving her looks of gratitude as she did so.
"Okay, and don't forget, Gwen, you join me on the chorus. You two, sing the background melodies." Any instructed, her nerves making her question everyone's memory skills.
"Any, we've got this." Betty placed her hand on the singer/guitarists shoulder.
And just like that, they were ready. Everything was set up and they all stood with instruments in their hands, while Gwen sat and awaited the signal. She was absolutely terrified, but it was worth it, as soon as they tasted singing, their fear would disappear.
"Hey Midtown High!" Gwen yelled into her mic, acting as cheerful and mysterious as she could to draw the crowd in. "I'm sure you've all heard of the current Spider-Mania around school. Well, this is to them." She commemorated and her voice turned softer as she saw Peter walk through the door. "Thank you, for everything you've done. And if any of those two are here tonight, I just wanna say how proud we all are." She looked at the boy. "So without further ado, we're the Emmjays."
"1,2,1,2,3,4." Any muttered into the mic and Gwen immediately drummed the introduction to the song, soon everyone's instruments flowed into one and the song was finally in motion.
"Sorry I'm not home right now, I'm walking into spiderwebs so leave a message and I'll call you back." Both Gwen and Any sang the chorus.
Little did they know that they'd stopped someone from giving up. Peter was prepared to let the vulture, aka Liz's dad, go and be free. It's not like he had a suit to stop him and he was ordered by Tony Stark to stay put. However, Gwen's words made him realise that People needed him, they depended on Spider-Man. It was his responsibility.
