Hit Me With Your Best Shot

'hit me down,
it's all in vain,
I get right back up on my feet again' -
Pat Benatar

AS SOON AS Gwen had secured herself away from the party, she found an ally to hide in and quickly slipped on her suit, hiding her bag on top of another building and gazing towards the house she'd just left. It was a stupid idea to begin with, but she never expected to see Spider-Man on the roof of Liz's house. He had his mask off, but she was too far away to be able to recognise him, combined with the darkness of the night, it was impossible for her to get a clear image. Ashla wasn't cooperating either.

"Ashla, can I get a clear image of that guy." Gwen asked the AI.

"I'm under strict programming not to disclose that information." Ashla answered. Gwen only groaned, of course Tony Stark would secure his identity, she only hoped he shared the same dedication to her suit.

Just then, the figure began to move. He stood on the end of the building and stared into the distance, his eyes locked onto a blue explosion. "The weapons." Gwen muttered, quickly following Spider-Man to the destination until she faced a similar problem to him.

The arachnid hero leaped off a house and attempted to lock her webs onto another structure, unfortunately, she didn't take into consideration the huge field ahead. It had nothing for either of them to work with, so they both ran, Ghost-Spider following the others trail until making herself known.

"Hey genius." Gwen caught up, sarcastically calling the boy.

"Ghostie? What are you doing here?" He asked in surprise.

"That's classified, but I could ask you the same question."

"Well, my answer would also be very classified." He answered, still running across the field. "This sucks."

"Tell me about it, I followed you, thinking it would be a good idea." She sighed.

"Wait, you were following me?" He asked.

"We'll talk about this later." Gwen replied, placing a finger over Spider-Man's mouth to keep him quiet. In the brief moment of silence, the two managed to tune into a weapons deal, it was the same type that they'd seen at the ATM robbery.

"This must be where the ATM robbers got their stuff." Peter stated.

"Quiet, Captain obvious." Gwen scolded, but before Gwen could catch a break from Spider-Man's voice, disaster struck.

With no regard for their stake out, Peter's phone began to ring, a yodelling sound echoed, bouncing from the walls of the bridge into their enemies ears. Peter looked at his phone before declining and whispering a small apology to Ghost-Spider. He'd not only endangered them, but a man in the middle of making a deal with the bad guys.

"Hey! Hey, come on. You gonna shoot at somebody, shoot at me." Spider-Man shouted when he landed into the fight.

"All right." The villain answered, not wasting a minute before readying his gun.

"Idiot." Gwen jumped down, grabbing the gun with her webs and jerking her hand to make the gun fall. However, her save didn't last long, Peter took the opportunity to head for another opponent. But before he could land a hit, the man turned around and sent a punch, it's energy propelled spidey into a pillar behind him.

While Gwen was staring in disbelief at her new partners stupidity, she neglected to take into account the second man. Who took her distraction to his advantage, shooting her with a beam that grabbed her and threw her on top of the hero she was trying to help up.

"Ow." She groaned.

"What was that?" The boy asked, but his instincts took over when he lifted his head and saw the van driving away. Without thinking, he shot the van with his webs and grabbed onto the girl next to him for support without warning her first. His back-up didn't go as planned, leading them both to getting dragged by the van.

"Oh, no, no! Ahhh!" Peter panicked as the girl next to him made similar noises of confusion.

"Oh my god, oh my god!" Gwen shouted as the van made a turn, swinging the two heroes into a dumpster by the road.

Before they had time to recover, the doors of the van opened, revealing another high tech weapon ready to fire. Luckily, when the trigger was pulled, it's outcome landed onto the vans back doors, which ended up spiralling to the teenagers. They managed to dodge, but at what cost. The road was beginning to become less and less smooth on their travel, causing them both more pain than Peter initially intended.

"Ow, my but." He yelled in anguish.

"Oh shit, not again." Gwen saw another group of dumpsters. Thinking quickly, Gwen shot her webs at the other side of the street, managing to steer them away from danger. Unfortunately, her victory was diminished when she saw another group of dumpsters. "Oh come on!" She shouted with frustration as they trailed through the mess. What they didn't expect was the large structure behind it, which ultimately, broke their connection with the van.

"Great." Peter waved his arms.

"You know any shortcuts?" Gwen asked, ignoring his previous sarcastic comment.

"Cmon." He instructed as he jumped into someone's backyard. "Good game." He said to the pair playing pin going before the duo hugged the Labrador in their garden.

"Whooo! Now this is more like it." Peter cheered as they were both finally off the ground.

"Remind me why we didn't do this in the first place." Gwen asked, slightly annoyed as to why Spider-Man dragged her along for the roller coaster. But as she turned her head to the side, she realised Spider-Man was no longer there. "Seriously!?" She shouted, looking around and hearing the chaos he was causing the locals.

Gwen's path continued as she waited for Spider-Man, but he appeared when she least expected it. Along with, a new friend? "Who's that?" She asked him.

"Who's who?" Peter asked before the figure came closer, grabbing the boy with its claws. Gwen was extremely confused and needed to catch the arms dealers, but she couldn't just leave her partner alone with that thing. So she followed her instincts and latched her webs onto the creature, getting dragged through the air by what was known as the vulture.

"Holy shit!" She exclaimed as she was pulled further and further into the air, her suit began beeping vigorously. "Ashla, what's going on?"

"You've exceeded your altitude capabilities, deploying parachute." Ashla noted before Gwen could comprehend her words. In a flash, she was pulled out of the sky by a web-like parachute and propelled towards the ground. When she looked up, she noticed Spider-Man was in a similar situation.

"Ashla, release the chute." Gwen demanded as she grew closer to the water, her cautiousness going unmatched by her partner. "Now!" Just as commanded, her suit was freed from the parachute and Gwen compensated by using her suits underarm wings to glide her towards land smoothly.

When she was finally safe, she heard the familiar screams of Spider-Man and saw him make the mistake she managed to avoid. "Spidey?!" She yelled, hoping he would miraculously re-emerge from the water. He didn't, which forced Gwen to dive in after him and try to locate the boy. She managed to find him trapped under his own parachute and struggling to get out, so she quickly pulled away the cover and began to swim with him to the surface.

Before they could make it, a crash entered to lake. Gwen panicked further, it could've been the green monster back to get them, he could drown them, what did he want? She procrastinated. Luckily, none of her superstitions were true, and the object that had entered the lake soon saved them and revealed itself as an iron-man suit. At first, Gwen was thankful, but she soon grew more embarrassed thinking about how he made an appearance to help them both.

Spider-Man instantly began explaining the situation to the suit, not even thinking of the possibility it was empty. "And then he just, like, swooped down like a monster. And he picked me up and took me up like a thousand feet and just dropped me." Peter spoke with fear. "How'd you find me? Did you put a tracker in our suits?" He asked.

"I put everything in your suits, including these heaters." The suit replied, giving Gwen a moment of peace as she began to feel warmth.

"Thanks." Both teens synced.

"What were you thinking?" Tony asked.

"It was Ghostie's idea to go after to boss. And the guy with the wings seems like the boss to me. We gotta take him down." Peter added, roping Gwen back into the conversation.

"Stop." Gwen muttered, nudging Peter to try and get her message across.

"Take him down now, huh? Steady Crockett, there are people who handle this sort of thing." Said Tony.

"The avengers?"

"No, no, no. This is a little below their pay grade."

"By the way mr Stark, you didn't have to come all the way out here. We had that, we were fine." Peter assured.

"Oh I'm not actually here." The suit alerted as its face piece lifted and revealed and empty compartment.

"Called it." Gwen stated.

"Thank god this place has Wi-Fi or you would be toast right now. Thank Ganesh while you're at it. Cheers." Tony stated, clearly having the time of his life wherever he was.

"Hey, I had him. We were literally about to get back above water before you're suit showed up." The girl crossed her arms.

"Ok Casper, I'm sure you'd like to tell yourself that, but the fact of the matter is that you were also being dragged into the air. Which was a rookie decision on your part." Tony answered. Gwen only rolled her eyes.

"Look, forget the flying vulture guy, please." Tony begged.

"Why?" Peter asked, Gwen could already feel the outcome of Tony.

"Why?! Because I said so!" He shouted. "Sorry, I'm just talking to some teenagers." He apologised, clearly not aiming it towards them. "Stay close to the ground. Build up your games helping the little people, like that lady who brought you the churro. Can't you just be a friendly neighbourhood spider-team?"

"But I'm ready for more than that now." Peter replied.

"No, you're not." The suit put its mask back down. "She, is currently my favourite right now. You wanna know why? It's because she doesn't challenge me on everything I say." Tony stated, pointing towards Gwen.

"I'm just naturally respectful." Ghost-Spider said sarcastically, hoping to annoy the boy next to her.

"I take it back." Tony quickly rephrased. "Listen, if you come across these weapons again, call Happy."

"Who's happy?" Gwen asked.

"I'll send you his number later." Tony answered, not getting into the details. "You know, it's never too early to start thinking about college. I got some pull at MIT." He changed the subject without allowing them any protest. "End call."

"Mr Stark is no longer connected." The suit alerted before flying away.

"That's awesome." Spider-Man said before wandering away.

"Hey, wait up." Gwen followed, soon noticing a glowing orb in the ground.

"Woah." Peter observed, until a familiar yodelling sound made itself known. "Hey man what's up? I'm on my way back." He answered the phone. "I'll see you tomorrow at school." The arachnid hero hung up after his brief conversation.

"You sound less cheery than usual." Ghost-Spider stated as she kneeled down and took a closer look at the weapon.

"By the way, what did you mean before? When you said you followed me." Peter changed the subject.

"Saw you on a roof. Don't worry, I didn't see your face." Gwen answered, sounding less happy when she remembered the party. "Oh shit, I told my friends I was heading out for some air. I've got to go." She quickly added before realising something important. "Here's a tip. You're still using your training wheels." She quickly exclaimed as she swiping away back in the direction of Liz's house.
