Chapter XIII
"CANDY!!!" ~Me during Halloween
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
We approached another world called Halloween Town. "If that world is Halloween all year round, does that mean there's candy to get also?" Sora asked jokingly.
"Only one way to find out," I said as we landed.
When we got off the ship and into the world, we went through another costume change. Donald dressed up as a mummy with mummy bandages wrapped all around him except for the tips of his toes and his beak and his eyes had a thick black outline around them.
Goofy was Frankenstein with tan turtleneck sweater, patched jacket, tattered pants, black suspenders, ripped brown shoes and a black leg.
Sora was a vampire with ashy-grey skin, black, leather clothing, white gloves with clawed fingers, a grey shoulder jacket, large black shoes, bat wings on his upper back and sharp teeth. He had an orange mask cowering his right eye with small horns on top, jagged jack o'lantern-esque mouth and triangular eyes with one green and the other one was scratched out.
I was a witch with a strapless white dress underneath a black coat with a lacy collar that had a dark purple favor with stars om the underside and my witch hat matched the design and pattern of my coat. I had on a black necklace with a red gem in the center of it and black thigh-high boots. My skin was ashy-grey like Sora.
The place around us was dark and spooky. Faint Halloween music played in the background. "This sure is a spooky place," Goofy noticed. "I bet the people here are scary-lookin', too."
"Don't worry. We look spooky, too," Donald said.
"We'll blend in," I replied.
"If they scare us, we'll scare them right back!" Donald said.
"You think so?" Goofy asked.
"Only one way to find out," I said as we went through the gate. An explosion was heard from a building in a hill and black smoke some out of it. A bunch of pumpkin head ghost Heartless appeared in first of us. Sora and I slashed at it, but no damage was inflicted on them. Also, they didn't seem to be attacking back at us like usual. "What's going on?" I asked. "Is today a day off for the Heartless?"
"And now, allow me to introduce the master if terror," Yelled a voice that sounded like it was yelling into a megaphone. We turned to see a nice dressing triangular shaped man with a black megaphone. He had a scary mask on the back of his head and a pin on him that said, MAYOR. "The King of nightmares-Jack Skellington!"
The group of pumpkin head ghost Heartless formed a line and parted as a tall, skinny skeleton man with a suit on appeared out of the fountain with green liquid in it. He posed as the mayor ran up to him. "Bravo, Jack! Bravo!" He clapped his his hands at Jack's performance. "Those ghosts will be a big hit at this year's Halloween!"
"Thank you, thank you!" Jack said. He slumped. "But their movement still needs work. It's not scary enough. I want to strike bone-chilling terror. I'm going to consult the doctor."
He stopped slumping and happily strolled up the hill. The mayor smiled, "Then I'll go attend the decorations." He happily scurried away to get the decorations.
Sora and I followed Jack up the hill and knot a spooky lab. A Frankenstein was in a wheelchair with a white lab coat, black glasses talked to Jack. "I don't understand. Maybe the guidance system was damaged in the explosion," Jack guessed.
The Frankenstein in a surgeon's outfit sitting in a wheelchair shook his head. "Nonsense. My devices are always perfect!" He declared with pride in his voice.
Jack skimmed a book by the table and his eyes lit up. "Oh, I've got it! Why, of course!" Jack cried. "The Heartless need a heart! Doctor, do you think we can add a heart to that device?"
"Certainly," the Doctor replied as he powered his wheelchair to get closer to the table. "A heart's not all that complicated. Ah, let's get to work."
Jack read the book, "To make a heart, first take a container with a lock..."
Doctor pulled out a machine that resembled a human heart. "We need a key to this thing first!" He called.
"Let's help them out," Sora whispered. "We'll unlock that machine for them."
"You're guys are really gonna to unlock it for them?" Donald asked.
"Why not?" Sora replied. "If they succeed, we don't have to fight the Heartless, right?
"Hm," I said. "You have a good point there, Sora."
"Besides, I want to see the Heartless dance, too," He added. "Don't you?"
"Not really..." I replied. "We're here for business, remember? Not fun and games."
"Aw, Saki, lighten up a little!" He whined.
I rolled my eyes, "Whatever."
We walked up to Jack. "Excuse me, Jack?" I asked.
"Hm?" He replied, looking up over the heart machine to look at us.
"We can help," Sora said as we pointed our Keyblades to the machine.
Two beams of light escaped put Keyblades and it unlocked the lock. The machine started beating like a human heart. "My! That was amazing!" Jack cried. "Uh, and you two are..."
"Sora," Sora said.
"Sakura," I added.
"Well done, Sora and Sakura!" He replied. "I'd like the both of you to be a part of this year's Halloween!"
Sora glanced at the lab table with the Heartless on it. "What's this Heartless doing here?" He asked.
"Oh, the Heartless came to town just recently," Jack explained. "What's frustrating is I can't get them to dance with me. So the doctor and I are trying to improve the guidance system. He's quite a genius!"
He walked over to the doctor. He was by a very big book. "Okay, Doctor, let's continue," Jack picked up a book and flipped through the pages. "The ingredients for a heart: Pulse. Emotion."
"Terror," the doctor continued, holding up a pulsing frog and a spider. "Fear," he showed a glass panel with a small, black hand sliding down on it.
"Hope and despair," Jack finished holding up two snakes, one orange and one grey, entwined together. "Mix them all together, and we have a heart!"
The Doctor wheeled himself over to a machine with a leaver on it. The pulsing heart was attached to a tube with green liquid in it, which lead to a machine with strange knobs on it that was over the lab table with all the ingredients on it and the Heartless. He pulled down on it and the heart began to shake as the machine with knobs on it that emitted lighting. The Heartless on the table sat up with its arms out. It twitched and for a moment. I thought it was going to work. But, it flopped back into the table and remained still. "It failed!" The Doctor cried. "Maybe we're missing some ingredients. Let's try adding memory."
He popped open his forehead which revealed a pale, pink brain. I flinched. "Sakura, don't worry. It's probably completely normal," Sora comforted.
"I know, but it gives me the creeps just seeing that," I whispered back.
He poked and rubbed his brain. "Sally! Sally!" He called. "Good-for-nothing girl! Don't know why I bothered creating her!" Doctor flipped his forehead back on. "Sally's got the memory we need," He claimed. "See if you can track her down."
"No problem," Jack replied as he turned toward us. "Sora, Sakura, would you two like to come along?"
Before I could say anything, Sora said, "Sure!"
Donald silently glared at him for accepting a task without consulting them first. As we walked out of the lab, the Mayor ran to us. He had his mask on his face which was originally on the back of his head. Either he put the mask on or he turned his whole head around. After seeing how the Doctor flipped his forehead open, I don't know which one is true. I shuddered at the thought. I'm definitely looking forward to leaving this world. "Jack! Jack! We have a major crisis!" He cried. "The Heartless are completely out of control! We can't stop them!"
We walked up to him. "Hm...maybe our experiment triggered something," Jack guessed. "Everything will be fine, Mayor. You have nothing to worry about."
We walked around a bit, destroying the Heartless. Now they were acting up and attacking us, like normal. We walked into a graveyard where a grave for a dog named Zero was. A ghost dog flew out of the grave and go Jack. "Zero! Have you seen Sally anywhere?" He asked.
Zero nodded and went behind a statue. A girl with long brown hair, blue skin covered in stitches and a patched dress emerged. "Is something wrong, Jack?" Sally asked.
"No, everything's going great," He replied. "We're going to have the best Halloween ever. All we need now is your memory."
"'Memory'? You mean this?" She said, holding up a small bouquet of Forget-Me-Nots. She handed the to Jack and he admired them. "Jack, I have bad feeling about this. Why don't you try something else? There's still time."
"Nothing can beat what I have planned!" He exclaimed, completely ignoring Sally's concern. "Once we get the Heartless a heart, they'll dance just as I envision it. Trust me. You're going to love it!."
We waked back to the lab and handed the flowers to the Doctor. "Yes, this is it," He said. "Now, just one more ingredient. We need 'surprise' to complete the heart. The mayor should know where it is."
We explored the town, looking for the mayor, while batting the Heartless. We went back to the graveyard and Jack opened the coffin at the edge of it. It sucked us in and spat us out in another graveyard, only this one was foggier. In the fog, we managed to make out the Mayor and we walked up to him. "Excuse me, Mayor?" Sora said.
"What is it?" He asked, turning around to face us.
"We need something that is a 'surprise'. The Doctor said you knew what it was," I explained.
"You mean Dr. Finkelstein?" He asked.
"Yeah, him," I replied.
"Ghosts rise from these tombstones," He explained. "Check the tombstones in order. If you get it wrong, you're in for a surprise!"
I glanced over to see a row of tombstones, where a ghost came out of the one second on the right and two in the left one over. Sora and I touched the in that order and the ground shook. "Splendid! Now go check the pumpkin!" The Mayor yelled.
We walked over where a huge pumpkin emerged and there was a check in the middle I opened it to find a Jack-In-The-Box. "I think this is the 'surprise'," I said.
"I think so, too," Jack replied. "Let's head back to the Doctor's lab.
We run aback to Dr. Finkelstein's lab and have him the Jack-In-The-Box. "Yes, this is it." He said as he wheeled himself over to the machine heart. He placed the Jack-In-The-Box with the other items on the table. "There you go. This time it's sure to work."
He began rolling over to activate the switch. "Ya!" A voice screamed.
"Gah!" Dr. Finkelstein cried as he wheelchair toppled over and the machine heart flew out of his hands. A kid dressed up as a devil caught it and scrambled out of the lab with two other kids, one dressed up as a witch, and another one who was dressed up as a skeleton.
"Get those three before they get away!" Dr. Finkelstein cried as we ran after them.
We entered the plaza. I quickly scanned the area. "We lost them!" I said.
Jack patted his knee and Zero flew to him form the graveyard. "Zero, after them, quick!" He ordered.
Zero nodded and he flew off somewhere. Jack lead us where Zero flew. We went back to the graveyard and he knocked on the coffin in the end. We flew in and entered another graveyard. I noticed a craved tree that looked like a person with a jack-o-lantern as its head. There was a door in the middle. "Guys, check this out," I said as I knocked on the door. The door flew open and sucked us in.
It spat us out at a hill that curved by itself with fencing around the area. There was an exit that lead to more hills. While bashing through the heartless, we followed Zero to the edge of the hill, where a walking bathtub with the three kids in it walked into a huge manor in first of us. "I knew Oogie Boogie was behind this!" Jack cried
"Who?" I said.
"A bug-filled man whose plans are always for the evil," Jack said as he lead us across the bridge to the manor and up the stairs to a room where the three kids threw the machine heart into a hole onto the wall. When they heard us entering the room, they whipped around and began scrambling all over the place, trying to hide from us. We ran all over the room, trying to hit them. I hit the witch, while Sora hit the devil, and the others hit the skeleton. They sat down, dizzy from running away from us.
We took them to a place in the room and Jack asked, "Lock, Shock and Barrel; what were you three doing back in the lab?"
"We were just following orders!" Shock the witch explained. "Oogie Boogie told us to steal the heart. It was Barrel's fault! It was his idea to tell Oogie Boogie about the heart."
"Yeah, that's right!" Lock the devil added.
"B-But you guys said-" Barrel the skeleton sputtered.
"You should be ashamed!" Shock cried.
"Listen here," I interrupted. "I don't care WHOSE idea was it, but can you at least tell us where this Oogie Boogie is?"
"He's in the room with a colorful spinning wheels with a golden stand in it," Lock explained. "The walls look like a gambling machine."
I nodded and lead the others outside. We checked every room I the manor until we found the room that matched Lock's description. Oogie Boogie stood on what looked like a Halloween themed slot machine. "Oogie Boogie, give me back the heart!" Jack begged.
"You want it?" Oogie Boogie taunted. "Then come over and get it!" He stuffed it into his mouth and swallowed it. Jack's face fell with horror. He laughed at Jack's horrified face. "Now, let's see if I can get their attention. Oh, Heartless!"
I prepared to see a swarm of them come in, but only two Halloween themed winged Heartless came in. "This is it?" He asked, looking around in shock. "Nobody disrespects me! Nobody!"
He made the section we were in explode and we flew into the spinner in the middle. He laughed as he caged Goofy, Donald and Jack out and brought the area Sora and I were in up to him. "Ah, the two Keyblade bearers Maleficent told me about," he said, eyeing me. "And the little girl who I'm supposed to bring."
He reached out and tried to grab me but I smacked him away with my Keyblade. "What's up with you guys?" I yelled. "Why do you what me? What's with me that you want?"
"Yeah! What is it?" Sora asked.
Oogie Boogie laughed, "Well, that's something to tell another time."
He made the area we were on explode again but we jumped before it exploded and fell back into the spinner. Oogie Boogie ran, trying to get away from us. Sometimes he caged the others out and brought the area Sora and I were on up, and we took advantage of that and attacked him. He made the area explode and ran away. While he was doing that, I snuck up to him and slashes him in the back. He cried out in pain as millions of bugs swarmed out of his body. As the now empty bag fell, it knocked a blue bug down and left it twitching next to Sora. The machine stood on the middle of the empty bag. "So, that heart was a failure after all," Jack sighed.
We walked out of the manor. Before we could exit the area, the ground began to shake and smoke filled the air. "Whoa!" We all yelled.
As the smoke cleared, we saw Oogie Boogie, but he was bigger now and fused with his manor. Dark blobs were all over him. "Whoa! How did he get so big?" Sora asked.
"Oogie is using the power of darkness!" I yelled. "He's drawing it from those dark globs!"
"So, we have to destroy them?" Sora replied.
"Yes!" I said, drawing my Keyblade.
We scrambled back onto the manor, dashing from here to there, destroying the dark globs. While destroying one of them, something really hot hit my back. I screeched out in pain and staggered off the bridge. Before I fell to my death, Sora grabbed my hand and pulled back onto the manor. He raised he Keyblade and said, "Cure!" A swirl of green leaves appeared on my back and the burn was gone. "You were hit by a dark fireball," He explained.
"That explains the burn," I replied. "Thanks."
"You're welcome." He nodded.
We ran off again, destroying more dark globs until the were all destroyed. Oogie manor sunk the ground and a huge Keyhole was revealed under him. Sora and I pointed our Keyblades at it. Yellow stars swirled around his tip of the Keyblades while blue stars swirled mine and two beams of light came form our Keyblades. I was pulled into the trance and saw the same thing again; a great big weaving with dark thread woven in it, dark thread weaving out of it and new colorful thread weaving where the dark thread was. When I pulled out of my trance, a book was next to my feet. Before I could read it, Jack said, "We should head back to the lab and tell the Doctor what happened."
"Yeah," Sora said.
We headed back to the lab, where Sally was. "I heard what happened," She said.
"Sally, why didn't I listen to you?" Jack sighed.
"Don't feel bad, Jack," She comforted. "We'll come up with another plan for Halloween." She grabbed his hands and held them with hers and she looked at him in the eye. "Next time, we'll do it together."
"I guess we have no choice, we will have to cancel the Heartless festival this year," Jack sighed. "Sora, Sakura, visit us any time! Be sure to come by next year; that Halloween will be the scariest in yet!"
"Emotion, memory..." Dr. Finkelstein read. "I don't understand; we had everything needed for a heart, but it didn't work. What is a heart, anyways?"
We left him to ponder that question as we went back to our Gummi Ship to travel to the next world.
