Chapter - 27
In that previous afternoon~
"Minho, use a private number to call the Jung organization and fix an appointment. Jungkook and Taemin, arrange some fake money to bemuse them." Min Yoongi said, while he was getting up from the chair.
"Sir, can't we just penetrate into the mansion with our entire force?" Taemin, a newly recruited police officer asked him.
"No, Taemin, we're not sure if Jung Sonbeok was living there or not. Entire force means more people will know about it and we can't trust many people in this. What if Sonbeok get alerted and leave the house or just hide into some secret tunnel." Yoongi explained.
"Now I get it sir. Just hope we can catch him tonight." Taemin saluted and left the room.
"Sir, I should call the Jung organization now. See you after an hour." Minho followed Taemin after showing his formal homage.
"Jungkook, I have some important things to discuss with the commissioner." Yoongi said when he went out of his office.
"I'm going to take a nap, couldn't sleep very well in the flight, call me if you need anything, ok?" Jungkook yawned lazily as the mention of some sleep.
"Go on buddy, I will call you after an hour." Yoongi gave a light push on Jungkook's shoulder when they were parting ways in the corridor. He went straight to the Commissioner's office and knocked twice.
"Yeah, Officer Min, please come in." Jeon Sewook called him from his chair. "I was just talking with Mr President, a few minutes ago. Here take a seat."
"Sir, we're going to enter the Jung organization's office tonight. Here is our plan, please look." Yoongi forwarded the blueprint and the drone-cam pictures to the head of the Seoul police and explained their plan in detail.
"Good but it is very risky. Do you have any other back up plans?" The commissioner asked him after placing those papers on his table.
"I was thinking that we shouldn't involve many people at first, if our plan fails by chance, our swat team will attack the building after an hour." Yoongi sighed, the man sitting across the table, could sense the slight hesitation in his voice.
"Alright, all the best to you and the team. One more thing, please guide Jungkook well, he's still learning." Sewook said with his same old brisk, businesslike seriousness. Yoongi assured him with a smile, thanked him and got up from his chair to go but Sewook stopped him. "Officer Min, can I have some of your time, only if you don't have any work to do now."
"Of course sir, I was going to take some time off before getting ready for our mission." Yoongi replied politely as he settled down on the chair again.
"Uh, it's about, what to say-" Sewook hesitated a bit before coming to the point. Yoongi paid full attention to his commissioner. After a heavy breath Sewook started again from the beginning, "Yoongi, your dad and I, are best friends since our college days. When we were raising our children, we sometimes bring this topic occasionally that if we become in laws someday, it would be a fabulous thing."
"Oh! Really? I'm agreeing with you sir, it is a very good thought." Yoongi's face lit up instantly. The thought of getting married to the Jeon family was like a dream came true for him.
"Yes but now that your dad is no more, I want to ask you this." Sewook paused to take a deep breath, then said, "I'm talking about Jimin. As you know he's my stepson but I raised him as my own son. He's almost 26 now, so I'm thinking about his marriage."
'Oh my gosh! Am I dreaming, somebody please pinch me.' Yoongi thought. He wanted to jump on the spot and twerk on the table but the serious face of Mr commissioner brought him back to reality. He cleared his throat and spoke without showing any excitement, "Sir I also think Jimin should date someone."
"Good thinking, he should date first before getting married. That's why I'm asking you, if you help him to set a date with your sister Yoona, it will be great. They are a perfect match." Sewook was looking at Yoongi with hopeful eyes but Yoongi felt hopeless instantly.
He gulped and shrunken on the spot. "Sir but my sister is not interested in boys, she's more into girls." Yoongi pressed his thin lips together to not show a pout. 'Why didn't you see me uncle, who can be perfect for Jimin other than me?' He thought but didn't let it out.
"What! Oh my goodness! What's going on with this generation, seriously? How can they go against nature?" Sewook was more than shocked. He continued, "if all of these people get married to their same sex partner, how can they be able to give birth? Whole humankind will be destroyed." He tsked as he shaked his head.
"But sir, the world's population is increasing day by day, won't it be a good step to decrease the overflowing population?" Yoongi was so done. He didn't give a f*ck about the world population. His heart was already burning, he wasn't interested in discussing more on this topic. So he got up again. "Sir, I'm sorry but I can't force my sister to marry a man when she loves a woman."
"Ah! I can understand your frustration Yoongi-ah," Sewook sighed deeply and sat straight. "Thank God, my sons aren't gay like her."
'You have no idea uncle.' Yoongi wanted to say but controlled himself because he had more things to do rather than arguing with a homophobic. "Sir, I have some other things to arrange, please send the back up team after an hour." Saying this Yoongi saluted and left the room, sulking badly.
It was already past 8 in the evening. The commissioner was strolling restlessly in his office. Yoongi and the team, along with his son Jungkook went inside of that mansion a while ago. Yoongi called him before entering there, told him to alert the special security task force after half an hour.
Sewook checked his wrist watch and heaved a sigh. Five more minutes, then he had to arrange the whole back up team. He couldn't trust other officers to do this thing, where his own son was also an important part of this activity.
Suddenly the commissioner's phone buzzed. He frowned when he saw an unknown number on his personal mobile phone. He waited for a second then took the call. "Who is this?"
"Hi, Sewook-ssi."
The commissioner's breath hitched after hearing the voice from the other side. He knew this voice was none other than Sonbeok's. "Jung Sonbeok?" He asked with a firm curiosity.
"Yeah, Sonbeok is here. Long time no talk, enemy."
Sewook could feel the mocking behind those words. "What do you want?" His tone was matching his expressions, cold.
"Your beloved son and some special officers are currently under my boots. I'm going to smash them all."
"No, you can't do that." Sewook couldn't carry on his same cold expressions anymore. His voice cracked, "The entire police department will rip your body apert. Don't even think of killing them, do you hear me?" Sewook shoutout.
"My body is not that important, I'm getting old anyway but these young men can die tonight if I want."
"What do you want Sonbeok?" Sewook clenched his jaws and eyebrows, he couldn't calculate what to say next, so he waited for the other man to reply.
"I want you to be here in ten minutes with the money which your f*cken president told me to give."
"How can I arrange the money before ten minutes? It's impossible." Sewook growled.
"Then come here quickly and tell your president that if he doesn't send me the money, I'll kill all of you."
"Yes, I'm going there now, don't do anything to the boys, yeah?" Sewook disconnected the line with his shaking fingers and ran towards his car. The other people inside the building, shocked to see their commissioner was running through the corridor like a madman.
Before starting the engine of his car, he called the president and told him everything that happened a moment ago. The president assured him to look into this matter quickly. Then he called the head of their back up team and told them to break inside the mansion, half an hour later.
sewook shifted gears as the car pulled free of the more congested streets and gained speed. He was breathing irregularly, eyes on the road, mind elsewhere.
It took him almost nine minutes to reach the mansion. He came out of the car and entered the building, panting heavily. One of Sonbeok's men escorted him to the office room.
"Sonbeok, where are the boys?" Sewook growled before entering the big hallroom. He froze for a second seeing his son's bruised face. "Jungkook!" Sewook tried to come near his son but two other goons caught his arms from both of his sides.
"Dad! Why did you come? You shouldn't have believed them." Jungkook's eyes filled with tears as he saw his father. He always wanted to be a brave man just like him but now he was feeling more awful to come before him like this vulnerable state.
"Welcome, welcome officer Jeon. Oh, sorry you've become the commissioner now." Sonbeok said coming closer to Sewook.
"Sonbeok, these boys are innocent, let them go. I've talked with the president, please give him some time to-" Sewook tried to talk calmly but the mafia head snapped.
"How more time he's going to take, tell me? I don't have the whole night to wait for him." Sonbeok came closer to taehyung and told him with a smirk, "Taehyung-ah, he's all yours now. Take a good care of our VIP guest."
"You again? Jungkook, look I told you before, he's a bad person." Sewook said looking at the fugitive criminal. Jungkook just smiled a little, hanging his head low but Taehyung showed no reaction. Hoseok came closer to his friend and put his hands on his shoulder so that his friend wouldn't feel low.
"Sir, please tell them that you haven't done anything bad." Yoongi spoke up from the corner, still on his knees, shaking due to blood loss.
"Yoongi, are you alright?" Sewook asked, anxiously looking at him and all the other captives.
"Yes sir but please tell them you didn't kill his parents." Yoongi transferred his gaze to Taehyung.
"What? Who's parents?" Sewook asked, his eyes raised in confusion.
"I'm Kim Taehyung, son of Kim Bongsill and Kim Haeri," Taehyung moved from the center of the room towards a certain person sitting in the corner. Slowly went behind Jungkook and pointed his revolver on his head. "And you had killed my parents in front of my eyes, remember?"
Sewook's eyes widened, when the memory hit right into his skull. "Kim Bongsill? You're Kim Bongsill's son?" Sewook tried to run closer to that boy but those two goons tightly held him firmly in his position.
"Wow! Taehyung-ah look, what I was saying before. He's the murderer." Sonbeok stretched his neck and grinned.
"Yes, I'm Kim Bongsill's son and I'm going to kill your son just before your eyes, like you did eighteen years ago. Just tell me, why did you kill my parents?" Taehyung asked coldly. The person whom he hated the most, whom he wanted to kill so badly, was standing before him now. His hands were itching to pull the trigger but the person under him was none other than the boy he loved the most. One part of his brain was telling him to take his revenge but the other part was stopping him there.
"I am sorry Taehyung. Yes, I killed them that day." Sewook closed his eyes and sat down on his knees, remembering that sight.
"What! Dad, no. Say this is a lie." Jungkook was more than shocked. He bit his lips and batted down some tears, this was not a good time to show his weakness. His own father, his idol was breaking his trust, now whom he should trust next.
"Now get ready to see the death of your own son Mr f*cking commissioner." Sonbeok snorted. He beckoned Taehyung to pull the trigger but Taehyung didn't see that, his eyes were only on the person he hated the most.
"No, please kill me instead, I'm the murderer. Leave my son. He doesn't know anything." Sewook clasped his hands together and pleaded with teary eyes.
"Why did you kill them?" Taehyung asked. His voice was deep, deeper than the Pacific Ocean. All the other sounds in the room muted. No was saying anything, everyone's eyes were fixed on the commissioner.
Sewook took a deep breath and started telling his side of the story, "I met Kim Bongsill and Haeri on our wedding day, 26 years ago. They were my first wife Somin's close friends. Both of them were cheerful and friendly but they were going through an economical crisis that time. Their business failed badly.
That time I was just a junior officer. Our agency transferred me from Busan to Honchildong, a small town. When we returned back to my home town Busan, we met them again. My wife was really fond of them. She used to visit their house almost everyday, during my duty hours. My son Jungkook was just two years old then. He used to play with their son Taehyung.
I didn't stop her before but after two or three months I realized that she was taking drugs behind my back. Bongsill and Haeri started selling drugs when they were almost in the streets. They did it to save themselves from poverty but dragged my wife into this shit." Sonbeok looked up into Taehyung's eyes, then lowered his gaze to his son's, both of them were listening to his words attentively. So he continued.
"I tried to arrest them but couldn't find their whereabouts. I tried to stop her by locking her at home, threatened her that I'll put her into an asylum but it was no use. She always kept in touch with them in my back. I was worried for my son's future, so I applied for another transfer.
That day I clearly remember, was the worst day of my life." Sewook sighed.
"I was packing my suitcase in the morning because my agency was transferring me at Gwangju and our train was in the afternoon. My wife was also packing her and our son's clothes. She promised me that she'll never touch drugs again. She even stopped taking it for a couple of weeks so I believed her. I got a phone call from my office to sign some important documents before leaving, so I told her not to make lunch, I would bring some food, on my way back home.
There was so much work in the office that I wasn't able to come out before twelve in the noon. It took me half an hour more to take out the food from a busy restaurant. When I finally came to my house, I found only Jungkook there. He was sleeping on the bed but I couldn't find my wife."
"Where did she go?" Sonbeok asked, he couldn't help himself from asking.
"I found her on the roof, senselessly laying on the floor, her mouth was coated with a stream of foam . She was already dead when I took her to the hospital. The doctor said it was because of the drug overdose.
I was desperately searching these scoundrels all over Busan because not only they sold drugs to her but also crossed the maximum limit of selling drugs. I know it was my wife's fault, that she asked them to sell more drugs because she won't get them in Gwangju. But there was a limit of selling them that time in our country and they just crossed it.
And that stupid girl, deprived of not taking drugs for some days, took them all at a time. Somin was my first love, I still couldn't forget her." Sewook couldn't hold back his tears, he started sobbing. Several minutes went by. His chest tightened with each passing second.
The room was filled with a ghostly silence. No was saying anything. All of the people were witnessing the rare sight of the wrathful commissioner's broken state.
After some moments, Sewook started speaking again, "I couldn't find Bongsill and his wife even after three years. every time I went after them, they just flew away from that place. So I started working overtime to upgrade my position. Couldn't take care of my son properly that time, I was an awful father.
After three years when my posting was in Daegu, I found them finally. Because of you Taehyung." Sonbeok said, looking into Taehyung's eyes.
"Because of me?" Taehyung frowned, the anger in his face was replaced by curiosity.
"Yes, you. I was in my office when the principal of Jungkook's elementary school called. She said a boy in his class just bit his arm and they called both of the guardians to solve this issue personally. It was a busy day for me but still I went to attend the meeting and found him. Your dad Bongsill was shocked to see me and went out quickly but I took his address from the school authority and went after him.
I wasn't going to kill them, I went to arrest them but they argued with me and told me to leave them because of their son. Now tell me how can I just let them go after all of the things they did to me?" Sonbeok gulped, remembering that horrible sight.
"That's why you killed both of them? Only because they argued with you?" Taehyung rolled his eyes and looked at his uncle, "Ahjussi, why aren't you saying anything? Tell me honestly, he was wrong or right?"
Sonbeok opened his mouth to say something but Sewook spoke up, "I'm sorry Taehyung, I'm guilty here. I shouldn't have killed them but when they pointed a gun at me, I got shocked and thought at that moment, if I didn't kill them, they might again destroy any other family in the future. It was all my fault." Saying this Sewook closed his eyes tightly.
"You have destroyed my family, also my childhood. Can you bring those golden days back to me? Why didn't you think about me that time? What had I done? Why did you punish me with them?" Taehyung's words were not bitter anymore, they were saltier than salt.
"After realizing what I've done, I panicked and I turned around to go out from there but saw you. You were on the doorway, senseless and injured because the bullet pierced the wooden door but a sharp broken piece of wood came out from there and cut an inch of your scalp.
The corner of your head was bleeding. I took you instantly to a nearby hospital. Doctor cured your head injury but your trauma was incurable. I used to visit there in my casual outfits because you behaved insanely after seeing a police constable in his uniform. You didn't stop crying even after two days. When the doctor said they couldn't keep you there anymore, I thought of something. I arranged the adoption papers to adopt you as my second son.
It was all going good, we became good friends but the day when I was going to discharge you from the hospital, you went missing. I couldn't find you anywhere. I searched you everywhere, all the schools, hotels, boy exporting rackets and even in the slums but I failed to find you.
After fifteen years, I joined Seoul police agency as a commissioner and slowly forgot about you." Sewook was sweating in his thick suit. He expected that one day he had to confess all his guilt in front of Bongsill's son but he wasn't prepared for this situation.
"But I never forget you Mr Jeon. Now you have to pay for your wrongdoings." Taehyung was looking at his fingers, they were shaking poorly.
"No, stop! I know what I did wasn't good but what you're doing is also not right Taehyung. Jungkook really likes you as a good friend. He even fought with me for you. Please don't kill him. I'm begging you, please let him go." Sewook fisted his uniform pants tightly on his thighs, hanging his head low, unable to look into Taehyung's eyes.
"Dad, it's ok, he's not going to kill me. I trust him more than myself." Jungkook smiled as his father raised his head to him.
"I can't with this delusional boy," Sonbeok tilted his head and chuckled comically. "I raised him, I know him better than you, boy." He looked into Taehyung's eyes and told him firmly, "Taehyung-ah, kill this boy and teach him a lesson."
"No, Taehyung, you can't kill him, do you forget those days in his house? You told me that you love him, don't you remember that?" Yoongi said.
"He's right, I can't kill him, but I can kill you instead." Taehyung sighed and raised his gun to the man, standing just a couple of meters away from him. His eyes were glistening with salted rage. "You're the one who kidnapped me from the hospital, you're the one who handed me a gun, not a pen when I was a child. You're the one who made me a criminal just like my mom dad. Why ahjussi? Why didn't you just kill me before ordering me to kill another person?"
"Taehyung, you cold blooded snake, I'm going to-" Sonbeok stomped his feet in anger but a loud siren outside, made him pause. Soon after some rapid gun sounds joined the sirens. "What the hell is happening here?" Sonbeok got puzzled. He parted his mouth along with his eyes when he realized the gun sounds were getting louder with every second. "This can't be true." He said looking at the only door of the room.
