Chapter twelve Heart breaking news and charity ball memories

The ride to the doctors office was spent in silent thought about my past and what I wanted for my future. The moment I walked trough the door my hands started to shake again, there was defiantly something wrong with me. My eyes scanned the room, it had a dark hardwood floor and the chairs were made of false leather. The reception desk was made of gray wood. A bubbling water cooler was in the corner with a tube of plastic cups sitting next to it. There was a crystal table in the middle with a pile of magazines sitting on it. Before I could even sit down Doctor Roland stepped out and called my name. That was why he was my favorite doctor, he was always punctual. We walked back in the examination room and oddly enough he bypassed all of the normal test and went straight for blood work. He came back and had a sunken look on his face. My tone was scared as I said, "What's wrong with me?" He took his glasses off and said in a somber tone, "You have a genetic disease called Retroviral Hypodisplyasia. It attack your nervous system. Your father has it and he asked me not to tell you about it until you were older." My tone was desperate as I said, "What are my treatment options?" He shook his head and said, "It is uncureable the most we can do is slow it down and manage like your father has been doing. You have ten to twenty years at the most. Try to make the most of it. I'm going to write you a prescription try and have a nice day. The only thought running through my head was what's going to happen to Licia Pete and Gwen. After walking out of the doctors office the first thought that came to mind was call Pete. My hand went into my jacket pocket and pulled my phone out and my fingers dialed a number that I could do blindfolded. A warm and hyper voice came on the other end and said, "Harry what's up?" My tone was sorrowful as I said, "Pete I'm dying" There was a moment of silence on the other end and then he said, "Nice one Harry" My tone was serious when I said, "Pete please meet me for coffee at the crescent moon cafe" His tone turned serious as he said, " Your not kidding are you. I will be there in ten minutes get me my usual coffee." The walk to the cafe was filled with the question why would my father have me if he knew I was going to be sick. Then it dawned on me anything to continue his legacy. The cafe was a tiny mom and pop business that was why the four of us loved it so much, there was no paparazzi to hound me. We always had our once a week friend lunches. My feet carried me up to the counter and I ordered a pumpkin spice latte for me and a vanilla iced coffee for Pete. I sat at our usual table and sure enough Pete came tumbling and stumbling in the door. He came over and said, "Just tell me what you want" A sigh escaped my lips and I said, "It turns out that my father has a genetic disease called Retroviral Hypodisplyasia and I have fifteen to twenty years at the most. My god how am I going to tell Licia." Pete got up from the table and hugged me and said, "I don't know how you are going to tell her but you need to because she will figure it on her own and be more upset. I'm going to tell Gwen are you alright on your own Harry" I nodded my head and said, "I'll be okay Pete.I'm going to make Licia a nice steak dinner before we discuss anything." Pete then said, "I wish you luck man call if you need to talk anymore."

My hand hit the light switch and then I walked up the stairs and into the kitchen. My hands began to gather ingredients and prepare dinner. I was making a steak and mashed potato diner drizzled in gravy just like Licia likes it. It was about four o' clock when the front door swung open and a sigh echoed through the apartment. My ears caught the sound of heels clicking on the staircase and the she came into view. She tossed a look at me and then walked over and fell in my arms and said in an exhausted tone, "Business picked up after you left it turned into a hectic and chaotic day. Oh but is that steak I smell if it is than my day just got better." She slipped off her heels and then stood on her tip toes to kiss me and then sat at the table. After serving both of us and taking my seat at the table Licia began to speak and said, "What did the doctor tell you Harry" My tone was shaken when I said, "How about we discuss it after dinner." She nodded her head and just continued to eat. After clearing the table it was time to face Licia. She was currently sitting on the couch and watching Pete save the day as Spider-Man but the minute she saw me walk in she turned the tv off and placed her hands in her lap and said, "Harry please tell me what's wrong" After taking a seat next to and taking her hands in mine I began to speak and said, " I have a genetic disease called Retroviral Hypodisplyasia and the doctor gave me fifteen to twenty years. I can understand if you want to move onto someone who can give you a future, you shouldn't have to be chained to me. Licia took my face into her hands and began to speak in a gentle tone and said, "Harry I won't leave you remember the promise I made at the Oscorp charity ball when we thirteen."

My mind began to take me back to that wonderful night. It was a beautiful Fourth of July morning and the only thing on my mind was figuring out a way to pluck up the courage to ask Licia to tonight's charity ball. It was a delicate situation I had fallen in love with one of my three best friends. There were two road blocks in my way though one was my lack of guts and fear of rejection which is surprising since I have gone round after round with some incredible martial artist. This was still fifty times more terrifying than that. The second issue was her parents were not paid nearly enough to afford the quality of dress that it would take to get in. Gerard came by and saw me in my mopping state and said, "Mr.Osborn sign this invitation and put about two thousand on this card and I will take care of the rest." I did as he asked and soon enough he came back and said words that lit up my day. "Ms.Hardy will be in attendance tonight, she thanks you for her invitation. The rest of the day passed quickly and soon enough it was time for the ball to begin. My father kicked it off by giving a boring speech. My heart was pounding in my chest and my eyes were glued to the door awaiting my princess and when she appeared it was most certainly worth the wait. She was wearing a over the shoulder black gown that had slits up the side of the legs. She had a gold pendant shaped like a heart with the center being made of a sapphire. Her hair was piled on top of her head in a French twist and a couple of strands hung down to frame her face. The little bit of make up she had around her eyes made them pop and feel like they were electric. She cast her eyes over to me and began to walk with all the grace of a big cat eyeing its prey and that is what I felt like prey. She stopped in front of me and said, "Well are you just going to stand there or enjoy the party with me?"I had no trust in my fried brain at the moment so I simply nodded. She grabbed my arm and pulled me over to the buffet table and handed me a wine glass full of orange crush. After taking a few sips she said, "Harry what's on your mind and don't say nothing because I know that look. As you well know that after knowing someone since they were six months old it sorta gives you the ability to read them. I nodded my head and said in a nervous tone, " I'll tell you but not here. I think the rooftop would be much more peaceful. She nodded and we started to make our way to the elevator, Gerard flashed me a thumbs up on the way over and whispered, "Good luck" My tone was smooth as I said, "Rooftop please" The elevator began to ascend and she wrapped her arms around me which brought a blush to my pale cheeks. She immediately went and sat on the stone bench in the middle of the rooftop garden. My feet carried me over and I sat down next to her and said," What I wanted to talk about was us" She cut me off and said, "If there is going to be an admission of romantic feelings than I'm going to be doing the admitting. Harry you are, Intelligent, Humorous, Thoughtful, Kind, Generous and Honest those are just a few reasons why I fell in love with you. She then took my cheeks and pulled into my first kiss ever disregarding that accident with Pete. It was amazing better than fireworks. Finally the need for air made us break apart and she said in a breathless tone, "Harry always remember through thick and thin I will love you no matter what." My mind was drawn back to the present when delicate fingers began to trace patterns on my arms. My tone was thoughtful and thankful as I said, "Thank you for being true to your promise" She nodded and pulled me closer. It felt as if everything felt a tiny bit better. I wonder what tomorrow will bring for some reason there was a sick feeling in my heart and dark clouds are rolling across the sky and those two things are always a bad sign.
