Chapter sixteen The funeral and Ravencroft
Harry flipped his phone open and said, "Hello Pete, what's going on?" Harry is silent for a few moments and then reacts in a shocked tone and said, "What do you mean Gwen's dead and my father went on a rampage" It felt horrible watching Harry play dumb but it was necessary to keep our secret. My exhausted form landed in one of the chairs and my head fell into my hands there were no words to describe how useless I felt. Harry went uh a couple of times and then said, "I understand we will be there tomorrow at one. Bye Pete" He then flipped the phone closed and walked over to me and took my hands in his and said, "Gwen's funeral is at one o' clock tomorrow after noon." Tears began to run down my cheeks once again, how could this have happened, Pete was just about to propose to her. Harry's even tone pulled me out my daze and he said, "Hey we did all that we could now we have to worry about what we can do for others" He pulled me into his arms and held me close and that somehow made things seem bearable. We started to cook dinner together and decided on Parmesan chicken. After we were seated at the table Harry sighed and said, "I have to figure out a way to rebuild Oscorp" The look on his face spoke to true loss and hopelessness. My hand landed on his face and my tone was gentle as i said,"Harry we can rebuild it together the first thing we have to do is call a board meeting and get all of the dirty members arrested. Then we have to get eight out of ten floors redone" Harry lifted his eyes from his food and asked, "Why aren't we redoing all ten floors?" My tone was firm as I said, "We need a maintenance depart for your glider and armor and we also need a floor for the development of our weapons." He nodded his head and said in a broken tone, "Licia I have been thinking about the similarities I share with my father and it scares me. I have his drive, his fiery temper, his intolerance and his business skill. It's like looking into a twisted mirror." My hand fell on his and I said in a comforting tone, "Harry those traits don't make you a monster it's how you use them that defines you." A smile flashed across his face and he said, "Your right Licia well we better head to bed tomorrow will be a emotionally challenging day" I nodded my head and began to help him clean up the dining room we washed dishes together and just splashed each other with water. It relived some of the pressure but these small moments of happiness do not change the fact we failed one of our dearest friends. Life does go on however and that is the fact we have to hold onto to keep us sane. We walked up to bed and it was relaxing to spend the night in Harry's arms and I was comforted by the fact that Norman was locked up in Ravencroft. My dreams were filled with fond memories of Gwen.
The sun began to creep through the window and awoke us from our dream filled slumber. Harry began to stroke my cheek and he said, "Good morning beautiful are you ready to face the day." My tone was quiet as I said, "There is no way to face today" Harry sighed and said, "Your right there is no way to face today but that doesn't mean we shouldn't, Pete needs us today." I began to trace shapes on his chest and said, "You say I'm the strong one but in reality you hold me together" He smiled and said, "Lets agree we hold each other up and in turn its our job to hold Pete up" Harry then kissed me and picked me up my body was still very sore from being thrown against the steel beam. My enhanced healing factor repaired the bruises but it did nothing for the soreness. Gerard came down to greet us and said, "I am very sorry about Ms.Stacy, I know she was a precious friend to you, I will take my leave now" Our breakfast consisted of pancakes and cereal and after that it was time to get ready for the funeral. My outfit for the day was a plain long black dress with slits up the side that came up to the knee. After slipping my flats on it was time to wait for Harry. My footfalls echoed off the marble staircase and then I sat in a chair. My enhanced hearing caught the sound of Harry's door closing. Harry looked very handsome in his black silk dress shirt and a black vest and a black tie and sports coat, the black brought out the pale blue of his eyes. He stooped in front of me and offered me his hand and said in a gentle tone, "Are you ready to go?" I took his hand and he pulled me into his arms and said, "It will be alright" My arms wrapped around his neck and my lips met his and I said, "Yes let's go say our finale goodbyes" We walked outside and chilled air began to whip across my face it was like the weather was trying to emphasize the somber mood of the day. Gerard pulled the limo around and we rode to the funeral home in silence there was really nothing more to be said.
The face of the funeral home was quaint and it contrasted the heavy feeling in the air. Gerard spoke up and said, "I will for when it is time to go to the cometary" I nodded and he pulled the limo into the parking lot We walked into the funeral home and the first thing I laid eyes upon was a pale pink wall and soft white carpet. There were candy dishes spread about the room filled with peppermint's and various other types of hard candy. We walked down a long hallway to where Gwen was being shown, we stopped and wrote our names under. Harry spoke and said, "Well it looks like Pete is here let's go see how he's doing." Pete was standing in front of Gwen's coffin, it looked like she could have been sleeping. She was attired in a pale blue floral dress. My hand landed on Pete's shoulder and he turned to face us, his usually brown doe eyes were lusterless and broken. He then began to speak in a tone that could shatter the strongest hearts, "Hello guys how are you holding up." Harry began to speak quietly and said, "Well we aren't fine but we are alight." Pete nodded and said," I wish I could have thanked the two heroes who helped me, they work for you guys right?" We looked at each other and my tone was firm as I replied, "Yes they do, I believe they are calling themselves Black Cat and Blue Goblin." Harry was about to protest the names but my heel coming down on his foot and that seemed to make him reconsider contesting me. He then said, "Licia's right that's what they are calling themselves and they are very sorry they failed." Pete the said, " They tried their best, that's all any of could do, the only one to blame here is me" My tone was quiet as I said, "You tried your best to Pete and the world still needs Spider-Man" He shook my hand off of his shoulder and said, "Maybe your right but at least for a little while Spider-Man is going to take a break" He then walked off and left us in front of Gwen's casket. Harry's hand landed on the edge of the beautiful oak vessel and he said, " I will never forget the desperate look on her face as her hand slipped through mine. I never want to see that expression ones face again" he turned his head down so that his fringe covered his eyes, but the telltale signs of tears were still present. My tone was soft as my arms wrapped around him and I said, "Harry there is no shame in tears". He replied back, "Osborn's don't cry" My tone was even softer when I said, "Who here is going to judge you for it, your employees aren't here and Pete and I are in the same boat you are." He quickly wiped his eyes as the funeral commenced and the preacher said the part of Gwen's speech that would stay with me forever, "Hold onto hope, time is only luck." The preach continued to speak and said, "We should all hold onto Ms.Stacy's words and live our lives in a way that if time is only luck we won't be ashamed when it runs out."
We walked out of the funeral home and Gerard already had the limo ready to go he gave a bow and said, "Mr. Osborn the plans are to head to the cemetery and then home correct?" Harry shook his head and said, "We have one more stop to make and that is Ravencroft." He nodded and said, "What ever you wish Mr.Osborn." We both got in and buckled up. The limo then pulled out of the parking lot and my eyes landed on Harry who had a thoughtful look on my face and I said, "We are going for a finale face down with the devil, eh" He lifted his eyes to meet mine and said, " Im going to face my father your going to wait outside" I rolled my eyes and said, "How many times do I have to tell you we are in this together and if you want me to wait outside you will have to handcuff me to this limo." He simply sighed and said, " Your frustratingly stubborn" A smile spread across my face as I said, " Face it Osborn it's one of the reasons you love me" He simply smiled and poured us each a glass of pineapple juice and we toasted to the new management of Oscorp.
We pulled into the parking lot of Ravencroft and chills began to run down my spine. The exterior was full of eerie gothic charm, it was enough to convince someone that the place really was haunted. The dying trees stood out around the grounds and gave it a morbid feel and the sickly crumbling stone walls gave it ancient aura. Harry put his hand on my shoulder and it sent me about a foot into the air as I said, "How can they keep people here, this isn't a place for mental rehabilitation, it's a death trap" He straightened his suite and said, "This is more of a prison than a mental facility, the people here are probably never going to get out. They are the worst of the worst. Some aren't even human any more." We walked through the gargoyle covered archway and arrived in the foyer. It was in disrepair like the rest of the facility and the woman on the front door looked like a lifeless corpse. She turned her hollowed eyes up to look at us and said in a tone that made nails on a chalk board sound pleasant and said, "May I help you?" Harry stepped forward and said, "I'm Harry Osborn I would like to see my father." She nodded and called a couple of burly guards and said, "Escort these two to Norman Osborn's cell." They escorted us down long hallways and past cells that had famous names like Otto Octavius and Sergieo Kravenoff. We finally arrived at a cell that read Norman Osborn. It was time to face a real monster. The room had a cold chill to it and the cell was very dark. Norman Osborn was chained to the bed and had a collar around his neck which injected a serum to prevent his transformation into the green goblin. A dark laugh echoed around the room and he said, "What's wrong son miss me already" This was not going to end well.
