December 21st 2013 - Morning at Melody's house - Kensington, London
It was around 9am and Alex was too busy sleeping as, Melody had gotten ready ever so quietly so that she wouldn't wake him up. She heard him moan a couple of times, but he never actually got up from bed. Melody knew that the engagement party had totally zonked Alex out, so she had left him to snore away. Just before leaving she grabbed her coat and scarf however, without knowing, she jingled her car keys loudly, disturbing Alex.
"Hmm... Mels!" Alex shouted, fidgeting his way out of bed. Melody sighed as she dumped her woolly hat on her head.
"Yes, Al?" Alex walked up to Melody, cupping her face in his hands.
"You forgot to give your fiancee a kiss before you left." He tapped his cheek and Melody rolled her eyes, before giving a light kiss to Alex. "There you go. Now, don't forget to look after yourself, I don't want you straining the baby." Melody nodded her head several times, Alex wondering why she wasn't talking. "You okay?"
"Yes." Melody faked a smile but it had looked ever so reassuring to Alex. "See you later, around six." She walked out of the door, Alex closing it behind her when she had left. It was time to open her little cake shop.
December 21st 2013 - Morning at Benedict's house - Shepard's Bush, London
"Mum, Dad!" Benedict called. Wanda paced to the living room, her son waving a cake in his hand. "What's this?" Wanda gasped. "Mum?"
"Oh, dear, I forgot... it was a cake for your friend, I was meant to ask for a change but I forgot." He lifted the lid of the box open. "I know that Karen liked Victoria Sponge and not chocolate dear." He sighed, closing the lid and grabbed his car keys.
"Well... Mother, I'll go and return it, so stay put till I get back. What's the name of the cake shop?" Wanda smiled at her son, knowing what she was getting Benedict into.
"It's... called Something Special dear. The address is on the bottom of the box." Benedict began to pat his pocket, trying to feel for his wallet.
"Right... well, I'll go and ask for another one and see you later." He threw the keys in the air, catching them before they fell. Benedict made his way outside, Wanda waving at him through the window.
"Oh Ben. You are going to run into a familiar face..." He then drove off to Something Special.
Something Special Cake Shop - Around 10am
"That will be five pounds fifty please." Elizabeth was at the till, taking the orders of a costumer. "Thank you. Here's your change and your receipt, please come back in a few days and it will be ready!" She gave a smile as the costumer left. Elizabeth sighed, slipping off her apron. "Hey, Melody, been a quiet day, huh?" Melody was in the kitchen, getting started on yet another cake. Elizabeth quickly ran to her, snatching the bowl.
"Hey, Liz, give me that back!"
"Mels, Alex told me you shouldn't really be doing much." Melody began to laugh and Elizabeth frowned at her.
"Pah, like her knows what's best for me! Elizabeth, I know my own body you know. Just because I'm having a baby, it doesn't mean I can't bake. You know I love baking..." Elizabeth looked at the floor and smiled at Melody, handing the bowl back at her. "Thank you. Please, get started on decorating that cake. A few piped rosettes will do Liz." Elizabeth began to rustle around the draws, looking for a piping bag and the right nozzle. Finally, she had found it as Melody poured the mixture into a tin. "Chop, chop!" Melody shouted.
"Don't you 'chop, chop' me." They began to chuckle, Elizabeth grabbing a handful of flour and throwing it in Melody's face.
"Oh! You want it like that do you?" Melody scrapped some cake mixture out of the bowl and threw it all over Elizabeth's apron. "Hahaha!" Elizabeth and Melody began to throw food at each other, giggling uncontrollably. All of a sudden their excitement was broken, they had heard someone call from the till.
"Hello! I need to talk to someone about this cake!" Melody gasped, looking at her friend.
"Go, go!" She whispered.
"No, I can't!" Melody pointed at her face, indicating to Elizabeth of how messy she had looked. "Fine!" Elizabeth walked out to the till, seeing a man with blue eyes demanding to talk to someone. "Hello... How can I help?"
"Yes, hello. My parents came here and didn't like this cake, may we please have this made again?"
"Yes, but you will need to pay extra. We do not-"
"May I talk to the manager please?" Elizabeth gulped hard.
"Y-y-yes. Mels!" Elizabeth called. "There's a costumer here who wants to talk to you!" Melody quickly grabbed a towel, rubbing her face to get rid of all the flour. She paced out of the kitchen and ran to the till, suddenly stopping and recognising who it was. The man lifted his head up slowly, staring at Melody, his jaw dropping open.
"Mels?"
"Ben?"
September 24th 1994 - Cambridge University
It was the first year of university and Melody had been leaning on a wall for over an hour. She was too busy drawing some designs for her Food Technology work. Benedict was busy trying to find his way to his next class. He aimlessly stared at the map in confusion, twisting and turning it to try and find where he had to go. Coincidentally, he noticed Melody sitting alone so he walked up to her, hoping he could help her.
"Um... Excuse me?" Benedict said to Melody, but she wasn't listening. Her mind was focused on her drawings. "Excuse me!" Melody looked up at Benedict.
"Yes?" She said firmly.
"I just wanted to ask, do you know where this class is?" Melody held out her hand, waiting for Benedict to hand her some information or even the map in his hand.
"Can I have the map?"
"Oh, yes!" Benedict gave Melody the map and she began to vigorously search for the room, that is if Benedict told her what room it was. "...Oh, sorry, it's room 56."
"Yes... If you walk down there and then take a right. Walk up the stairs and it's the second door on your left." Melody threw the map back at Benedict and she carried on scribbling.
"Thank you." He smiled, hoping she would make some conversation, however she just murmured.
"Was there something else?" Benedict glanced at her drawing.
"That's some nice drawings." Melody smiled, getting up from the ground, tucking the paper under her arm and held out her hand to Benedict.
"I'm Melody. Melody Fellows. And you are?" After a few moments, Benedict finally shook her hand.
"Hello Melody, I'm Benedict, Benedict Cumberbatch." Melody snorted.
"Nice... Nice name."
"Yes, I know. It sounds really bad..."
"Well... Benedict. See you around." Benedict bowed his head and walked away. Melody then parked her bottom back to where she was before and carried on drawing.
That was their first ever meeting, which had changed both of their lives.
