• Chapter 20 •
Melody leaned her head onto the door.
"Ben, you didn't have to come. I can deal with everything myself." Benedict strains himself inside and slowly walks into the kitchen. He really wanted to help Melody, especially because she had to stay in bed until she had the baby.
"In here okay?" Melody folds her arms, smiling.
"Over here..." About to grab the bags from Benedict, he stops her. Benedict just cares, even though Alex didn't.
"No, no. Mels, let go. Please. Don't strain yourself." Melody smiles slightly, taking one of the bags off Benedict. She wanted to help. She'd always helped her best friend, just as he helped her.
"I'll be fine. It's only one old bag." Melody placed it onto the counter, taking out some snacks. At first, she pulled out a cloth and some cleaning spray. She waved it at Benedict. "You know I have some of this? You didn't have to buy a new one."
"Well, Mels, I'd rather spend my money on you then anyone else." He pecks Melody on the cheek and reaches his hands into the other bag. "And..." Melody bites her lip, facing Benedict, her hands on her back as she deals with the pain in her back. "I brought your favourite to help with cravings!" Benedict grabbed a huge box of strawberries, Melody squealing as she grabbed one out and stuffed it into her mouth.
"You know how much I love strawberries! Thank you so much Ben. This baby..." Melody starts to rub her baby bump, Benedict blinking lightly and simpering. "... loves strawberries." Benedict places her hand on top on hers, Melody admiring how close Benedict felt to her child. She knew how much Benedict wanted children of his own. And a wife of his own. But she thought she had lost him to Karen.
"Just like her Mother..." Melody smiles at Benedict who smiles back. "So where's the Father? Mr Hater?" Benedict asks as Melody chuckles.
"I... actually give you permission to call that and... he went earlier. See some friends, I think." Benedict glares at Melody, frowning.
"Are you telling me, he has left you here alone? What kind of fiancee is he?" Melody drops her head, her mouth saddening.
"I... Well, to be honest... I don't want to marry him... He doesn't give a crap about me... Or the baby... Hell, he doesn't care that Mom died. All he wants is my body and that's it..." Benedict grabs hold of Melody's hands, staring right at her.
"Hey, hey... I care. I really do." This was the subtlest hint to say that he loved her so much, but Melody's heart was too broken to realise. But, somewhere, she knew that he also loved him. Alex and Karen needed to be thrown out of the picture and so they would be closer together. But, it wasn't that simple.
"I... I know you do. You've always cared. I care about you too..." He thought the next words to leave her lips would change his life, but they weren't the words he was looking for. "I wish... I had a husband like you..." This was her way of saying I love you, but neither of them could confess.
"If I could I-" Benedict confession was now interrupted, by another phone call. Not on his phone though. Melody's.
"Sorry, I... I should answer..." Melody slightly simpered, about to walk to the phone, until Benedict grabbed hold of it for her. "Thank you." He smiled. "Hello. Yes it is, speaking." Melody slowly walked into the living room, her voice quieting. "Oh... Okay... Thank you... Yes... Bye..." Melody slowly put the phone down and it dropped to the floor, Benedict rushing to her.
"Mels, hey! What's wrong..." Melody didn't blink nor breath. Until a few moment later, she blinked several times. "Mels?"
"I... It... It was just... some funeral..." Oh, her voice trembled again. Another reminder her mother was gone. A phone call. "... funeral information... Shall we... start?" Melody walked around Benedict, taking out the rest of the sprays and Melody dropped her head in sorrow and sadness. She began to sob silently, Benedict wrapping his arms around her.
"Hey, hey... My dear Mels..." She rested her head onto his shoulder, Benedict running Melody's back.
"I... I'm sorry... I..."
"Don't... Don't apologise. You shouldn't be going through all this on your own Mels... It's why I'm here..."
"Thank you... Ben... For being here... It's more than what Alex... has done..." Melody faced Benedict, as he cupped her face in his hands.
"It's my pleasure... Your Mother was amazing, just like you are..." Melody hinted a smile. "I'd hoped to see that smile soon..."
"You're amazing too you know..." She began to wipe her tears with the end of her dressing gown sleeve. "K... Karen is lucky to have you as a... boyfriend." What she really wanted to say, was that she wanted him, because he was just one of the bestest friends ever.
"Thanks..." He placed his hands onto her shoulders. "You'll get through this Mels. I'll help you... I promise." Benedict whispered. He then grabbed the cloth and spray and began to spray the counters, slowly cleaning them.
They had to look spotless for his friend, right?
"Are you sure you'll get to clean the whole house?" Benedict chuckled.
"I'm not sure about the whole house, but enough to keep you happy." Melody simpered, dropping her arms by her side.
"You really don't have to do this Ben. You being here is enough."
"I enjoy being here, with you. So please, I want to help." Benedict carried on rubbing the counter in circles, cleaning his way all over the place. Melody sat herself on the sofa, watching a movie she loved. Mission Impossible.
Benedict knew her passion for that movie and she would never take her eyes off the screen, even if the house was on fire. Okay, not that far, but you know what I mean.
"Ben!"
"Yeah?"
"Why don't you stop? You've been cleaning for about an hour. Even I can't go for that long." Benedict placed the cloth and spray onto the side, washing his hands thoroughly in the sink.
"What you watching?" Melody gave him the look. "Oh, right. Mission Impossible?"
"Yep."
"You used to love that." Benedict sat himself next to Melody, his arm over her shoulder.
"Still do. Not sure about my girl in here though."
"She'll get used to it..." Benedict rubs her baby bump, Melody cherishing it. "When she's older though."
"Hmm... Yes..." Melody gradually edges her head towards Benedict shoulders, resting. "Thank you so much for today Ben..." Benedict kisses the top of her forehead.
"No problem dear..."
All of a sudden, three loud thumping noises echo from the door and Melody let's out a gasp.
"Shit, Ben... Alex..." Melody quickly eases herself up, grabbing hold of Benedict's hand tightly. "Come here quickly!" They whisper and walk into her room, opening the wardrobe. "Sorry..."
"Meh, it'll do." Benedict makes his way inside, Melody closing the door. "Wait!"
"What?" He quickly pecks her on the cheek, Melody simpering.
"Good luck." And the door closed.
We all know Alex has a good eye, but possibly Melody will divert his attention away from her room...
