• Chapter 16 •
Alex tensed his cheekbones. He really hated Benedict's confidence. And his character.
Melody, meanwhile, was in the disabled toilets and stared at herself in the mirror.
She couldn't believe it. Her Mother had officially left her life, her mind... Her heart and soul. It was now empty, but she knew that she lived on in her dreams.
Melody began to rub her baby bump, remembering Benedict admiring it for her. To her, it was the most adorable and kindest thing anyone had ever done. She loved Benedict, but didn't want to confess her love.
Suddenly, the door opened, Alex rushing in and he immediately tended to Melody.
"Hey, Melody, I heard... I am so sorry..." Melody sniffed, tightening her hands, something which Alex couldn't see. That little baby inside of her was kicking away, but it was kicking too much. For a moment, she thought she was in labour, but that wasn't possible, although that time was near.
"It's fine Al... I'll, be... fine!" She burst into tears, Alex wrapping his arms around his fiancee. He didn't know how to handle her, but the least he could do, was be nice and loving - something which Alex failed to do since Melody reunited with Benedict. And yes, I use the word reunited very carefully.
"Shh... It's going to be okay..." Somehow, Melody was not reassured by his words. The tone if his voice and the way he spoke, told her otherwise. She only believed Benedict. Her best friend.
Melody pulled herself back from Alex, wiping away her tears which rolled down her cheeks.
"Right, why don't we... head on home?" She instantly paced out of the door, Alex sighing hard as his love, for the first time, was being rejected.
He made his way outside, pacing in front of Melody so that he could start the car before she came.
Melody, on the other hand, was talking to Benedict. Both of them being strong for each other.
"I'm sorry Mels." Melody frowned. Why on earth would he be apologising? "It's all my fault..." Benedict ran his hands over his face, his breathe shivering. Melody grabbed hold of his hands, Alex observing. He wasn't impressed.
"Don't... just don't..." Melody's expression drooped, she didn't want to see Benedict look like this. "I... It was never ever your fault Ben... Mother loved you. She always knew that you would be the one to make me happy..." Melody tried to smile. "And... she was so very right." She kissed Benedict on his cheek, wincing.
"Mels? Are you okay?" Benedict began to feel anxious and worried. He knew something was wrong with the baby, but he wanted Melody to say it to him. Melody grabbed hold of Benedict's shirt tightly, pulling it down. "Mels!? Seriously, is everything okay? Shall I call a Doctor?" Melody slowly releases his shirt from her grip.
"I..." Benedict holds Melody's hand tightly.
"Mels, what is it?" Melody had to lie. She was in pain but had already been through enough internal pain.
"It's... nothing. I'll be fine." Benedict frowned, Melody unclutching her hand from him. "Thank you... again Ben... I'll speak to you later on." She gave him a hint of a smile and made her way to the car, Benedict watching her enter and drive away. He also went into his own car and started to drive home. Almost immediately, he got a call from Karen.
"Hello Benedict?" Karen said to him, waiting for him to respond. It took him a while, since his phone was balancing on his chest as he drove.
"Hey, Kare. I'm just, driving home."
"What happened?" Benedict sniffed. "Benedict?"
"She... She passed Karen." Karen gasped, covering her mouth and then she combed her hair back with her fingers.
"Are you okay?" She wondered. Pah, inside she didn't care. Benedict scoffed.
"... To be honest Karen, I'm more worried about Melody." He sighed. "Listen, I'll speak later." Instantly, he put the phone down, throwing it onto the front seat. It was going to take him a while to get home...
Melody's house - Kensington, London - Around 10pm
Melody and Alex had just entered the front door of their house and Alex had carefully locked the door. As Melody made her way into living room, Alex stood at the door, just reflecting on his fiancee's relationship with Benedict.
He knew that they were getting too close. He even bad the slight suspicion that something was going on between them. For him, he had all the right to be suspicious. The death of Amelia would hopefully bring the two closer together.
"Alex?" He quickly turned around, throwing his coat on the sofa and he sat down next to Melody. Alex rubbed her baby bump, feeling some light continuous kicks. She quickly pushed his hand away.
"Yes, what is it my dear?" Melody nearly choked on her own spit. My dear? Wow, she knew he was only being nice because of the events that had passed.
"What were you doing back there?" Melody wondered, ignoring the word he had called her. Alex simpered, slightly.
"Oh... nothing special. Do you want anything?" Melody shook her head, leaning back. But before Alex left, she remembered that she did.
"Actually can I have a fresh pair of clothes please?" Alex went into his room and rummaged around for a set of clothes for Melody.
Melody, on the other hand, was texting a certain someone.
Benedict.
