We're Running Out Of Time

In autumn everything dies
Immortality is an eternal autumn
Every second we live, we're one second closer to dying

"You see, Yana, immortality is not a gift," she whispered. "You have to understand that, Ya, you have to."
"Of course, Vivii," Yana said softly. "I understand."
"Good," Vivii smiled. "Come on, Ya, let's get dinner."
Yana smiled back, following the older girl into the evening mist.

---------------

The pair were seated in a corner booth at the local cafe, sipping on soda as they waited for their meals to arrive.
"So how's school?" Vivii asked.
"Why isn't it a gift?" Yana burst, avoiding the question.
Vivii sighed. "Because, Ya," she murmured. "It just isn't."
Yana was silent.

---------------

"Lazhir!" Yana called. "Come here!"
The dachshund puppy ran towards her, his tongue lolling from his mouth.
"G'boy!" She said enthusiastically, smiling at him as crouched down and scratched his ears. "G'boy!"
Lazhir gave her a wide, dog-like grin.
"Good puppy!"

---------------

Yana sighed, twisting her hands around the green leash as she looked around the sunny park. Children were running around with their friends, playing tag and catch. Parents stood idly by the fences and playground benches, talking and watching their kids impatiently.
Lazhir had grown to his full height, and had been dragging his owner around the park, but she finally took to a bench to rest. The young dachshund tugged at the leash, but wasn't quite strong enough to pull Yana off the bench.
Suddenly a woman with a big black dog appeared next to the pair.
"Hey hun, could you watch my dog for a minute please?" The woman asked, shoving a leash into Yana's hands. Before she could protest the woman was gone.

---------------

"Well, puppy," Yana finally said.
She had been sitting on the bench for three hours and the woman had yet to return. Rain soaked her clothes and both dogs, and the park had been abandoned by all other life forms.
"I guess you'll be coming with us, then," she finally resolved. "Come on."

---------------

When Yana arrived at her small cottage in the forest, she settled down by the fire with a mug of hot tea. The mysterious black dog took a seat next to the hearth with Lazhir, resting her head on her paws.

---------------

"What are we going to do with you, puppy?" Yana asked as the black dog and Lazhir chased each other around the small clearing in front of the cottage. She smiled.

---------------

Years passed. Yana immortalized the dogs, so that the three of them would be companions forever.
And now, someone finally noticed the invisible girl and her dogs. An old woman, who glared at her menacingly, walked up to the trio as they were sitting down to rest on the park bench.
"You stole my dog!"

---------------

During the 23 hours Yana spent arrested before her trial where she was proven innocent, the young woman was able to locate Vivii.
"Vivii!" She shouted. The lady turned, her face breaking into a grin as she ran forward with tears streaming down her cheeks. Vivii pulled Yana into a tight hug, whispering and laughing and crying all at once.
"Ya, I missed you!" She screamed, rocking back and forth on her heels.

---------------

"All charges have been dropped. You are both free to go."
Then the dogs were released into the room, flying towards Yana and Vivii. Yana wrapped her arms around them as they slobbered all over her.
And all was well.
