41: Percy Does Adulting
Percy waited out front of Midtown High. He heard the bell ring, and soon enough students were pouring out the doors. Percy kept scanning over their faces, looking for one in particular.
A group of students spotted him, and tried to start up a conversation. Percy did his best to be polite through their questioning.
"So, why are you here?"
"I'm supposed to pick someone up." Percy said.
"Oh, really? Who is it?"
"Oh, uh. Just a..."
"Girlfriend?"
"Boyfriend?"
"Oh, no, not a girlfriend or boyfriend." Percy said, weirded out.
"Yo! Look at this ride!" A guy called out to his friends from nearby.
Percy turned to see a group of students looking at his bike. He really hoped he wasn't gonna have to 'fight' some teens to leave him and his bike alone. Don't touch it don't touch it don't touch-
Percy's godly senses pinged behind him, toward the entrance. He turned and locked his gaze on the brown haired boy. He was on the phone, looking thoroughly confused.
"Mr. Stark, what do you mean, you sent someone to pick me up-?"
Percy raised a hand and waved at him. "Peter!"
Peter nearly jumped out of his skin. "Wait, I see- Did you send your son?"
Tony laughed. "I'll see you soon kid." And he hung up.
Peter put his phone in his pocket, and made his way over to Percy. Several other students were watching curiously. "Uh, hi, Mister..."
"Dude, It's Percy." Percy said. "You ready to go? Have everything?"
"Yea- yeah. Yeah, I've got everything." Peter said.
"Alright. Let's get going." Percy said.
"Where's your car?" Peter asked.
Percy pointed to his bike with a grin. Peter's jaw slacked a little.
"That? We're riding that?" Peter asked, eyes wide.
Percy kept walking to his bike, and walked through the crowd of bike enthusiasts ogling his ride. "'Scuse me guys."
"-hey," One of them protested.
Percy flipped open one of the saddle bags, and pulled a helmet out. He tossed it to Peter, who was still a few paces away. Peter barely caught it instead of having it just smack into his chest.
"Dude, this is yours?"
"Yup." Percy said, and grabbed his own helmet out of the other bag.
"What's the model? I've never seen anything like it- You had custom work done, right?"
Percy shrugged, and got his helmet situated. "Peter, you good?"
Peter was scanning the bike as best he could, taking in the parts and curves and angles. "Uh, yeah."
Percy took his backpack from him, and tucked it into one of the saddle bags. He then made sure the helmet fit Peter alright.
"Parker, you know this guy?"
"Uh, he's..."
"A friend." Percy said, and sat down. Peter sat down too.
Percy turned it on, adjusted the fancy science stuff like Tony had showed him, and then they were off.
~~~
After Percy parked, he put his helmet back and grabbed Peter's pack. Peter had to scramble to put his helmet away away before Percy had walked too far and gone around a corner.
"I can carry my own bag..." Peter said.
"I've got it." Percy said. "Besides, security will have to stop us if you're carrying something. They don't even blink at me anymore."
"Security?" Peter asked.
"Yeah, we have to go get your ID set up." Percy said. "For the internship."
"Oh."
~~~
"So, Mr. Stark. What are we doing here?" Peter asked, looking around the training room.
"Percy here is going to work with you." Tony said. "You're strong, kid, but you haven't learned how to manage it properly."
"What-? You told him-?" Peter asked.
"Peter." Percy said. "Your secret is safe with me, I swear. From one hero to another."
Peter frowned. "But..."
"I'm Maelstrom." Percy said. "Pretty sure you've seen some videos of me and Hawkeye sorting out some stuff in the city."
"Holy Krispy Kreme. You're Maelstrom?" Peter asked.
"Yeah." Percy grinned. "So, a secret for a secret. Feel better now?"
"I... Yeah, actually. Thanks." Peter said. "So, how are you going to work with me?"
"We're going to be sparring, testing your strength, working on your combat skills, basically." Percy said.
"Oh, I uh, I'm not, I don't hurt people, I just, stop them, you know?"
"We figured that out, kid." Tony assured him. "Percy doesn't kill either, and he's mostly hand to hand, like you."
"He has a sword-"
"Have you seen me cut somebody open with it? No. It's part of my signature style, like Steve has his shield." Percy said.
Peter looked thoughtful and worried. "But, what if I hurt him?"
"He'll be fine." Tony said.
"But-"
"Peter, I need you to look at me here." Percy said, and Peter took a few seconds to meet his gaze. "I know you don't know your strength. But I promise you, that you cannot hurt me in a way that will last. There's magic that makes me hard to injure, and I heal quickly too."
"Magic?" Peter asked, his brows shooting up.
Percy summoned Anaklusmos to his hand, to prove it.
Once they began training, Peter was hesitant to use his strength against Percy. It took some more effort to convince Peter that it was okay to throw an actual punch.
They trained often after Peter got out of school. Percy made sure that Peter knew he was a friend, and that he could always call for help, no matter the time or the problem.
Other days Peter was completely absorbed into Tony's part of the "Stark Internship". They would spend ridiculous hours working on their science-y stuff. After Percy accidentally blew something up, they kicked him out of their lab.
Clint laughed his ass off when Percy went to him, sulking. The two of them and Natasha spent quite a bit of time together, working on a secret project. It was slow going, but it was going and it was important.
When Percy wasn't with either of those two groups, he was at Camp or visiting his mom and Paul, and the new baby Estelle.
Annabeth's architecture career had gotten off to an amazing start. She was currently working with some CEO of some company Percy couldn't ever remember the name of.
~~~
Percy got a call in the middle of the night.
"Yeah?" Percy asked.
"I've got to write a report for AP History and I don't have time to research- you know about Greek stuff right?" Peter asked. "Can you help?"
Percy laughed. "I'll get Annabeth. We'll be there soon."
"Oh thank god."
~~~
"Hey, T." Percy said, plopping onto the couch beside Tony, who was looking over something on a tablet. "What're you up to?"
Tony sighed. "After New York and Shield secretly being full of Hydra... Who's really around to protect people?"
"We are." Percy said.
"We're not enough." Tony said. "There's so much more going on here than we can reach, plus all of what's out there." Tony gestured towards the sky.
"Yeah, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the aliens thing." Percy said. "My sister married one. I have an alien-in-law."
"Don't remind me." Tony said, face in a hand. "I still don't know what she sees in him."
"I don't know. He's got magic though. That's pretty cool." Percy said.
"I guess..."
"Anyway. What were you saying before?" Percy asked.
"Oh. Right. Well. I'm working with Bruce to try and figure out some sort of protection system." Tony said.
"Protection system? Like what?" Percy asked.
"We're making a program, like Jarvis, but it'll have control over some suits around the world. So it'll be able to find the threats and get there in time." Tony said.
"Oh Hades no." Percy said. "Have you not seen Terminator?"
"But-" Tony frowned.
"Yeah, no." Percy said. "There is no way we get lucky enough that the robots don't turn evil."
"Have you got a better idea, then?"
"I'm working on it. I promise." Percy said.
Tony blinked. "What?"
"I'm actually doing important stuff, you know." Percy said. "I'm not just doing whatever."
"It's still in progress, we've got a lot of kinks to work out." Percy said. "But I'm working on something."
"Okay..." Tony trailed off. "So... How are the gods doing?"
"Ares is still a dick. Zeus has been keeping to himself." Percy said. "They were pretty shocked when Kat abdicated. They've been getting used to that. Getting used to how I run things instead of Zappy Pants."
"Zappy Pants." Tony snorted. "It's so stupid."
"I won't be arguing." Percy grinned.
"Athena giving you much trouble?"
"Yes and no. She's not going easy on me, but... She is being actually helpful." Percy said. "I've been talking to Apollo too, and I've got some ideas."
"Ideas for what?" Tony asked.
"I don't want to say just yet. I don't want to get anyone's hopes up. My hopes up too much even." Percy said. "But yeah. I've got a lot going on."
"Sounds like it." Tony said. "Ice cream?"
"Did you get that one we saw-"
"Yes. Yes I did." Tony said. "Splish Splash Sherbet."
"Awesome."
