27: Asgard

After the song ended, Kat and Annabeth made their way over to the two gods. Annabeth looped her arm through Percy's. "That went well."

"Oh, hey, Percy?" Kat mentioned, "Dad's been having some trouble. Figured you should talk to him."

Percy tilted his head. "What kind of trouble?"

"The can't sleep kind." Kat replied.

"Oh." Percy said, and nodded. "I'll talk to him."

The notes of the next song began to pick up, and more pairs of people began to join in. While Annabeth & Percy, and Sally & Paul joined the others, Kat looked up at Loki expectantly.

Loki blinked in surprise, and then led Kat into the dance.

"I didn't know you could do that." Kat said.

"I am a shapeshifter. I can do many things. Does it bother you?" Loki asked.

"Nope." Kat said slowly.

Loki had a hint of dubiousness in her eyes, but Kat hadn't lied. After a few moments of silence, Loki spoke up again. "Mother contacted me."

"Oh? What did she say?" Kat's eyes widened.

"I am to return to Asgard in a few days." Loki said.

Kat's eyebrows shot up. "Really? Why?"

"There's been some commotions, and there's a unique event to happen soon. She'd like that I am home for that." Loki said.

"When are we leaving?" Kat asked.

"We?"

"Well, you're not leaving here without me." Kat replied.

"What makes you say that?" Loki asked.

"Lots of things." Kat said. "I guess Percy and I will have to talk to the gods."

~~~~~~
Talking to gods was like herding cats. Except harder.
Percy and Kat were exhausted when they finished.
~~~~~~

On the day before they were to leave, Thor arrived. Tony had called Bruce a few days prior, and the scientist had joined the tower for a while. Percy kidnapped Bucky for the day, and took him to Camp Half-Blood.

Kat and Thor were introduced to each other, and Thor was surprised to see how friendly Loki was with her.

While Kat brought out the Monopoly game board, Thor whispered to Loki, teasingly. "You fancy her."

Loki elbowed him harshly, then acted as if nothing happened.

Tony claimed Bruce as his teammate. Kat plopped down on one of the smaller couches, and Loki took the seat beside her out of habit. Natasha and Clint were already partners in crime, and Thor took the last available seat next to Steve.

The science bros duo began talking strategy quietly, while  Natasha and Clint seemed to communicate through minuscule twitches and telepathy. Steve began explaining the game to Thor, who was slightly confused, but catching on.

Loki glanced over at Kat, and saw her blankly staring ahead. He felt the pressure against his magic, and subtly placed his hand at the back of her head before putting more into the spell.  Loki returned his hand to his lap as she blinked several times.

She looked at Loki. "I did it again, didn't I?"

Loki nodded, and continued to silently observe the game.

Kat sighed. She really didn't want to be using him. "Thanks again."

The corners of Loki's lips tilted upwards in a small smile, and didn't say anything.

~~~~~~
"Alright, brother. It is time that we go." Thor said, a grin on his face.
"Well, then let's go." Loki said, gesturing ahead.
Kat bounded ahead into the elevator.
Thor gave his brother a look. "You did tell her farewell, didn't you?"
"Why would I?" Loki asked as he walked ahead.
"Have you lost all your manners? You're about to leave her while you return home." Thor said.
"I don't believe I ever said I was leaving her here." Loki commented, stepping into the elevator.
"She's coming?" Thor asked, mouth agape.
"Duh." Kat chirped. "I'm supposed to make an alliance."
Thor paled a few shades, and had almost regained his color by the time they were on the roof. He turned to Kat. "The Bifrost can be a disorienting experience-"
"I've got her, Thor." Loki said, and hooked an arm around Kat's waist. "You don't want to get lost traveling by Bifrost, or you're likely to end up somewhere else entirely."
Kat nodded. "I remember you said something like that."
Thor smirked for a second, before calling up to the sky. "Heimdall, open the Bifrost."
Colors wrapped around the three of them, Kat felt like she was in many places at once, and yet none at all. She was moving, and yet standing still. And then abruptly, it was over.
"Thor! Welcome back!" Volstagg greeted.
"You brought Loki back. And another." Sif commented.
Kat retreated into a semi-hunched posture, eyes scrunched tight and holding her breath. Loki had to use his other hand to help keep her relatively upright.
"Are you alright?" Loki asked, brows scrunching together.
Kat weakly held up a finger in a gesture he learned to mean 'gimme a minute'. He patiently waited until she straightened up again. "That was cool and all, but I don't think me and the Bifrost get along." Kat said, and Loki noticed she was a few shades paler.
"My apologies, but it couldn't be avoided." A deep voice spoke, belonging to a man with golden eyes.
"Heimdall." Loki politely greeted.
"Prince Thor, Prince Loki, Lady Katha." Heimdall said, and the way he said 'Lady' gave the three he'd greeted the impression that he knew her official title wasn't 'Lady', but perhaps he was in on the ruse. Kat had decided not to reveal her godhood to the other Asgardians, save for the royals, and whoever else was appropriate to know. "Welcome home."
"You seem like a cool dude." Kat said, and Heimdall smiled.
"Why did you bring a midgardian here? She doesn't belong among us." Sif said.
"She has business here." Loki said, with a harsh note that Kat had rarely heard from him.
"Thor?" Volstagg asked.
"It is true." Thor replied. "Now, let us return to the palace!"
Kat felt a nudge at her mind, and whipped into a defensive posture, facing horses.
Who's that? The horses asked.
"Scared of a few horses?" Fandral smirked.
"Just surprised me." Kat said, instead of retorting how she had momentarily expected telepathic attack.
"Speaking of horses, it would appear we are short one." Hogun commented.
"She can ride with me." Fandral offered.
"She'll be with me." Loki said, and walked over to his black stallion. He gracefully mounted with practiced ease.
"Not going to help her up first?" Fandral inquired.
Loki lowered a hand for Kat to use as balance, and she swiftly mounted the horse behind him with just as much grace. "I don't need help to get on a horse." Kat replied, and patted the horse's flank.
Fandral's eyebrows rose, but they all took their seats and began the light trek to the palace. The entire ride, Kat would lean precariously far and risk falling off in her attempts to see more. This had Fandral and Volstagg laughing, even Thor at points too, and Sif smiled, despite her reservations.
"This is your home?" Kat asked Loki in awe.
"I don't know." Loki replied quietly, so only she would hear.
"It's beautiful." Kat said.
"You haven't seen the darker parts." Loki sighed.
"No, but it's so full of life. Life life life life." Kat said, and even pointed out a few things as she said 'Life'.
"If you look at it that way, then I suppose." Loki said.
Another minute of riding, and Kat was seriously internally debating on whether or not she could get away with standing to get an even higher vantage point.
"What are you thinking?" Loki said, noting her stillness and silence.
She sent him a telepathic picture of what she was thinking of doing.
"No." Loki said. "Don't do that."
"Why not?" Kat asked.
"What does the Lady want to do?" Fandral asked.
"She wants to stand." Loki answered.
"If she wants to walk, then let her walk." Fandral laughed.
"No, no." Kat said, and pointed at the stallion's back. "I want to see higher."
"You want to stand on the horse's back?" Volstagg asked.
"Yeah." Kat said. "Actually, now I just want to do it to see if I can."
This garnered looks from all of the warriors three, as well as Sif and Thor. Loki sighed heavily. "You have thirty seconds."
"Yes!" Kat grinned, and used his shoulders for balance. She was quick to get her feet planted, but it took a few seconds to fully stand. It took a lot of focus to keep her balance, but it was very rewarding to know that she did it.
The others laughed then, impressed at her ability. And if the common people they passed hadn't been looking before, they certainly were now.
"Thirty." Loki said, and Kat slipped back down to seated.
"Where did you find this midgardian?" Hogun asked.
"Thor works with her father on Earth." Loki replied.
"Really?" Sif said. "And he would allow her to go to a different world?"
"He didn't like it, but like Loki said, I've got business here." Kat replied.
"What is your name? I don't believe I caught it." Fandral asked.
"Katha." Kat replied. The Asgardian's eyebrows rose at the familiar name. "But you can call me Kat. My friends do."
"How long do you think you'll be staying?" Hogun asked.
"Probably a while." Kat replied.
"Well, whatever the case, the AllFather wishes to see his sons upon their arrival. And he will want to meet this guest." Sif said.
"We should find you a change of clothes." Loki said.
"What? What's wrong with what I'm wearing now?" Kat asked.
Volstagg and Fandral laughed.
"Jeans are not the best way to present yourself in front of a king." Loki replied.
Kat held back a retort that resembled 'I'm a queen, I do what I want', and instead blurted, "Wait! Does that mean I have to wear a dress?"
Sif's interest was piqued at Kat's alarm, while the others were more amused.
"It would be best-" Loki began.
"Oh we know I can't wear long dresses. I wore one once- No, twice. I wore a long dress twice, and it was the worst." Kat interrupted.
"But perhaps Sif can help you find something more appropriate for your tastes." Loki finished.
"Oh. Sif?" Kat turned to the warrior.
Sif raised an eyebrow. "You would wear trousers over skirts?"
"Dresses are death traps." Kat replied. "You can't fight in them, they trip you up, I can go on."
Sif genuinely smiled. "Yes, I think I'll be able to find you something."
~~~~~~

Frigga was waiting for them just inside the palace. Loki quickly closed the space between them and wrapped her in a hug. When they released each other, Frigga analyzed his face. "You're doing much better."

"I am." Loki replied honestly.

Frigga looked past him, and smiled at Thor before her gaze landed on Kat. "Welcome." She smiled warmly. "It is good to finally meet you, Katha."

"You know my name?" Kat blinked.

"Of course I do." Frigga said. She gestured for one of the servants to come forward with a parcel. She took it and gave it to Katha. "Sif, if you could help her get dressed?"

Sif nodded, and Kat's eyes flashed with panic. Frigga noticed. "You should find the trousers to your taste." She commented.

Kat's eyes widened. "Thank you, Queen Frigga."

Frigga smiled. "You don't need to thank me, and you needn't be so formal with me."

Kat bowed her head slightly.

Frigga turned to Sif. "Join us when you've finished, please."

Sif nodded, and gestured for Kat to follow her while the boys followed Frigga the other way.

Once in private chambers, Kat opened the parcel to reveal a light blue tunic, a corset belt, dark brown leggings, undergarments, and boots. Sif turned around to grant Kat privacy to change.

"The queen likes you." Sif commented.

"Does she?" Kat asked.

"I believe so." Sif replied.

"Huh." Kat said. "Uh, Sif?"

"Yes?"

"Help please."

"What?"

"I don't... I don't know how to put this on."

~~~~~~
Sif briskly led Kat to the throne room, where they were supposed to meet Odin. The great golden doors opened for them. Inside, she saw Odin upon his throne, Thor and Loki side by side, and Frigga at the bottom of the steps.
"Warriors, Sif, boys, thank you. You may be dismissed." Frigga said politely.
Odin gave his wife a curious look before narrowing his eyes at Kat. As Loki passed her, she saw a look in his eyes. She set her shoulders straighter.
When it was only the three of them, Odin called down to Kat who approached to stand where the princes had been before. "You are no mortal."
"No." Kat said. "I am Katha, Queen of the Romans."
Odin stiffened. "Jupiter is King of the Romans."
"Not anymore." Kat said. "He was overthrown."
"What is your business here, self-claimed Queen of the Romans?" Odin asked.
"I was hoping to make an alliance."
"Alliances require trust." Odin replied with a narrowed eye.
"Which is why I would ask that you allow me to stay to build that trust." Kat replied.
"And what would I tell my people? That a Roman casually walks among us?" Odin retorted.
"Katha," Frigga said, "Our son has taught you magic, hasn't he?"
Odin raised an eyebrow.
"He has been teaching me, yes. I catch on quickly, but I'm still learning." Kat said carefully.
"I would like to teach her myself." Frigga said.
Odin looked at his wife in surprise. "You would teach her?"
"Indeed." Frigga nodded.
Odin huffed. "Why did Loki teach you magic?" He asked with a perpetually narrowed eye. For a second, Kat wondered if he needed glasses. And then wouldn't it just be a monocle because he only has one eye?
Kat shrugged. "I guess we both got bored."
"What is your relationship like with Loki?" Odin asked.
Something about his tone made her metaphorical hackles rise. Her gaze hardened. "He's my friend."
"Do you trust him?" Odin asked.
"I do." Kat said firmly.
Odin barked with laughter. "Only a fool would trust the god of lies and tricks."
"AllFather, a fool is someone who knows the truth and throws that knowledge away in favor of an easier choice." Kat replied. "I am no fool."
Odin stiffened. Kat felt proud of herself.
"Well, Katha, we'll start our lessons once you've gotten a tour of the palace." Frigga said with a warm smile. "I'll see you at supper."
Kat genuinely smiled at Frigga, and bowed her head to the royals before walking to the doors and leaving.
