15: Awkward and Rough Conversations

When Kat went back to her room after talking to Percy and Kat, she found that Loki was still awake. "Thought you were going to sleep." She said as she closed the door behind her.

Loki shook his head. "Sleep won't find me tonight."

Kat tilted her head. "I could knock you out if you'd like."

Loki rolled his eyes. "That won't be necessary, Ylva."

Kat grinned at him. "I know you said that it was an appraisal or whatever, but I'm still not sure."

Loki smiled. "It seems you will just have to take my word for it."

"Yep." Kat shrugged. "So, what do you want to do?"

Loki took a moment. His head tilted before he righted it. "Alright. Then let's start."

"Start what?" Kat asked.

"You wanted me to teach you Seidr, yes?"

Kat's eyes widened, and a grin tugged at her lips.

"Sit." Loki began to instruct. Kat looked around for a chair before Loki pointed to the floor. She raised an eyebrow, but sat down anyway. "I cannot just teach you magic. You must learn the flow of Seidr. It is in the air, in everything. You must reach out your senses and find it. Once you have found the Seidr, you can begin to shape it as you wish."

"Close your eyes and seek it out."

Kat closed her eyes, and stretched out her senses the way she did when she used water. Apparently she looked a little constipated or something, because Loki spoke. "Breathe." He said, his voice gentle and guiding.

Kat breathed deeper. But Loki saw another flaw. "Relax." Kat made her shoulders sink. "It's there. You just have to find it. Reach out. Once you find it, I can guide you. But you must find it on your own." He sat down in front of her.

Loki meditated while he waited, feeling the fluctuations of the magic. It tended to whisp around Katha, attracted to her, and yet never soaking in. He monitored the reactions between Katha and the Seidr.

Kat would get close to grasping onto it. Loki had expected this. It often takes years for a child to fully realize how to connect with the Seidr. Loki himself was a prodigy, and it was a year before he could actively control the Seidr to an extent that would allow him to practice.

Loki also thought that Kat would catch on much quicker than anyone he had ever heard of before. After all, she was borne of pure magic.

After several hours, Loki felt the surge of magic that meant she had found it. He opened his eyes that he knew would be glowing a bright green, to find hers glowing in that sea-green visage. "That's it, my Ylva." He says, and Kat thinks he might even sound proud.

Later that morning, Kat was in the kitchen baking. While she waited, she practiced some moves for her Haladies, having to imagine them in her hand. With a sigh, she checked on the cookies.

Someone was walking over to the kitchen, she noticed as she pulled the sheet from the oven and set it out to cool. She turned around at the same time that she entered the kitchen. Of anybody Kat had expected, Annabeth wasn't one of them.

"Oh, hey." Kat blinked.

"Hey Kat. I was hoping I could talk to you." Annabeth said.

"Yeah, sure. I gotta wait for these anyway." Kat replied, gesturing to the cookies.

Annabeth grinned at the blue cookies, and took a seat at one of the barstools.

Kat pulled one around so that they could face each other as they talked. "So, what's up?"

"Well, there's two things I want to address. One is awkward, and the other is personal. Or the other way around. No, they're both kind of awkward and personal." Annabeth said.

Kat chuckled softly. "Okay. What've you got for me?" If she could handle Loki playing dumb about some slang that made her uncomfortable, she could handle whatever Annabeth threw at her. Or maybe not, considering it was Annabeth.

Grey eyes stared at her with an analytical gaze. "Do you like me?"

Kat froze. Swallowed. Looked down. What on Earth could she say to that? Kat looked up, and held her bracelet adorned wrist aloft. "Uh, Aphrodite gave me this. It kinda, erm, traps a kind of feeling for someone inside it. So... Percy loves you, deep in his soul. Super cheesy, yeah. But it transferred over to me, too. But now it's in this," She fidgeted with a few of the beads, "And I don't feel it."

Annabeth nodded silently, accepting her answer. "Okay. The other thing is not quite as awkward."

"Oh, that's a relief." Kat blurted.

Annabeth cracked a small smile. And then she regained her serious expression. "Percy's avoiding camp."

"Oh." Kat said, realizing the depth of what she meant by that.

"I don't understand everything about him. You're the only one who would understand what's going on in his head. I need you to convince him to go back to camp." Annabeth said.

Kat stood up and took a still hot cookie and shoved half of it in her mouth, munching as she thought. And thought. And swallowed. Annabeth asked with her eyes if the cookies were done. "No, just godly resistance to heat." Kat replied in answer.

Annabeth nodded. "What are you thinking?"

"Well, where is he right now?" Kat asked.

"Out for his morning jog with Steve." Annabeth replied, stifling a yawn. "If I didn't know better I'd wonder how he could get up so early. Don't know how Steve does it."

"Steve is superhuman, and we aren't human at all." Kat replied. "The no sleeping thing sucks. Anyway, when will they get back?"

Annabeth glanced at the clock, turned to answer Kat, and then looked back at the clock to make sure she'd got the time right. "An hour, maybe? It depends."

Kat nodded stiffly. "I'll finish these up and talk to him when he gets back."

~~~~~~
Percy had just opened the door to his room and walked in when he suddenly felt a fist slam into his jaw.
Percy whipped around to face his attacker, and stopped in his tracks at seeing Katha glaring at him. "What the Hades?" He demanded,  bringing a hand up to feel his jaw.
"I could say the same thing!" Katha exclaimed.
"Why?" Percy scowled.
"Avoiding camp?" Kat prompted.
Percy lost some color. "I'm not."
"You forget that we're literally the same soul. I know how you work. How we work." Kat said. "And you are avoiding camp."
"I'm not avoiding, I'm just not ready."
"Not ready my ass." Kat said strongly.
"I'm not! What do you expect me to say? I don't want them to see me any differently! I'm still Percy for fuck's sake! I don't want them to think I'm someone special or anything! I just want things to be how they were!"
Kat stepped up into his face. "We never wanted to be like the gods. Look at what you're doing now. You are acting just like them."
Percy shoved her back. "I just need some time! If I can fix this, they won't ever have to see me like... Like this."
"Fix this?" Kat growled out.
"Godhood! If I can find a way to undo it, I'll go back to being the Son of Poseidon. Just the same old crappy me I've always been." Percy yelled back.
"You're still Crappy Percy! You've just gotten the immortality pack, which apparently includes being a douche!" Kat returned. "Besides, the Fates gave us Domains. We're the twin rulers. Do you think you can change that?"
Percy looked taken aback for a moment before rage began to set in. "It is not like that! Someone else can go be the god of heroes or whatever! Just make somebody else special for a few centuries or something!"
"You are the god of heroes for a reason! I am the goddess of the between for some fucking reason. We can't change that! What we can change is our goddamn attitude and be better!" Kat yelled.
"I don't want to be better! I want to be normal!"
"Well guess! Fucking! What!" Kat bellowed. "We were never normal!"
Percy snarled, his fists clenched, and he looked about ready to hit something. "I just want things to go back to how they were. I don't want to live forever. I don't want to watch everyone die. What's living if it never ends?"
"Maybe we have to live forever so others can live at all." Kat replied.
Percy didn't reply.
"Are you going to go to camp now or what?" Kat questioned.
"No. I'm not... Not ready." Percy said, harshly.
"Wrong answer." Kat said, and tackled him, turning them both into mist.
They reformed in between the cabins and the dining pavilion. They wrestled across the dirt. a few shouts of surprise were ignored by the two until a spear was launched into the ground near them. The twins sprang apart, and were quickly on their feet facing each other, but heads turned to see who had thrown the spear.
Clarisse stood straight, ready to leap into action. "Prissy. And- who are you?"
Kat pointed to Percy. "Clarisse! Punch him!"
Clarisse gained a questioning gaze. "Not that I won't, but why? And again, who are you?"
"Katha Stark." She said. "He gave himself a high horse and holy mission. Dipshit's been avoiding camp."
Clarisse narrowed her eyes and turned to Percy. "What's she talking about? Annabeth said you needed time."
"He thinks he can undo it when the Fates already gave him his godly title." Katha said. "He's been avoiding camp so that if he goes back to being a demigod nobody will have to really remember that he was a god. He thinks that being a god is betraying you all, not realizing that ignoring you is the real betrayal."
Percy's jaw clenched, and his heart grew heavy. Clarisse took a slow, deliberate step toward Percy, and then marched, nailing him in the nose with her fist. Percy took a few steps back, and clutched at his nose. Clarisse shook out her hand, it had obviously hurt more than she had thought it would.
Kat yelled at Percy. "See! Things are still normal! Clarisse punched you!"
Clarisse gave Kat a look that some mix of disbelieving and confused.
"Alright Perseus," Kat said. "You're going to stay here until I say you can leave."
"What-" He began to contradict her.
"If I can be here, you can fucking be here." Kat growled back. "You aren't the one at risk of your head exploding and giving cabin four a new cauliflower patch."
Percy opened his mouth to argue.
"No!" Kat snapped. "Now, I'm going someone where my mind might  not explode, while you get over your self thrown pity party." She turned and walked away from them, toward the Big House.
Will gave her a wide eyed look as she walked his way. She offered him a high five, which he granted. "Annabeth said you were awake, but not that you were up to this."
"I have no idea about being 'up to this'. Which is why I'm going to chill in the attic. I wasn't joking about the 'might explode' bit." Kat said. "I don't even have Loki here to keep me sane."
Will raised an eyebrow. "Why are you staying then?"
"To make a point." Kat replied.
"What point?"
"That it's okay to be here. And I guess to test myself." Kat answered.
"Well, I suggest you get going. The early risers are up, and they're gonna haul everyone else out soon." Will advised.
"Got it. Good to see ya, Will." Kat grinned and walked off.
~~~~~~

Clarisse punched him in the gut not long after that. Percy gave her an insulted look, and she gave him one in return that said she didn't give a shit.

"I'll keep punching you until you understand not to avoid your family." Clarisse huffed, dragging Percy up to the dining pavilion.

The Poseidon table quickly gained a few of Percy's friends. Clarisse & Chris, Will & Nico, Jason & Piper, Hazel & Frank, Leo & Calypso. He gave them all a shy smile. He was feeling like shit.

Percy gave a confused look to Frank. "What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be at New Rome, Praetor?"

"We're working on establishing a portal between the camps. It's easier if I'm here because I know about New Rome and I can help coordinate stuff." Frank said.

Percy nodded. And looked down at the empty plate in front of him. He didn't particularly feel up to eating.

"That's just the excuse." Hazel said. "We're here because we heard about you."

There was an awkward silence. "You know we don't think any less of you, right?" Jason said.

Percy sighed, and a hand scratched at the back of his neck. "I think less of me."

"Drop the pity party, it doesn't suit you." Nico said, taking a bite of toast.

Will rolled his eyes. He opened his mouth to speak, but the Stolls just... showed up, plopping down on the bench. "So-" Connor began, and Travis finished. "-Who was that hottie?"

Of the four who knew the basics of Kat's identity, Calypso merely continued to watch, Leo and Will watched with interest and attentive expressions, Nico raised an eyebrow, wondering if Percy would be more offended or protective, or if he'd have to save the poor souls. Both, if the look on Percy's face was anything to go by. "You do not get to say that about her." He blurted.

"Oho!" They both said. Connor added with a smirk, "Somebody's protective."

"I wonder why!" Travis said exaggeratedly. "Maybe I should go have a nice long conversation-"

"That's my sister you're talking about." Percy growled, lightly glaring.

Everyone at the table froze, jaws dropping. That is, except Percy who was glaring, and the other four who now wore amused expressions. Leo was the other exception, as he was cackling at the Stoll's dropped jaws and the 'oh shit' in their eyes.

"Since when do you have a sister?" Jason blinked from behind glasses.

"Since the day after thanksgiving." Percy replied.

"Uh?" Jason's brows furrowed.

"How did you find her?" Piper asked.

"She kind of just, showed up." Percy said as honestly as he could. Leo was still cackling, Calypso was shaking her head at either Percy or Leo or both, Will was stifling a grin behind his hand, and Nico was lightly shaking his head.

"How old is she?" Hazel asked.

"Seventeen." Percy answered.

"Wow, so you're really close to the same age." Frank said.

"Eeehhh." Percy made an odd noise. "There are two completely different truthful answers to that."

Nico snorted. Chris looked lost. The Stolls looked like they were going over escape plans in their heads. Leo was still cackling, and banging the table with a closed fist while holding his other hand to his chest.

"What do you mean?" Clarisse asked Percy.

"Well..." Percy dragged the first word out, and then the rest came in one long breath of air. "When I fought Tartarus with the other gods and we blew him up, the Fates were like, 'Oh hey lookit, let's make two of them!' and they split my soul and now there's two of me- us- yeah anyway I have a twin clone sister now."

A/N

I survived finals, thanks for the good luck wishes!

Just out of curiosity, I want to know the popularity of some ships. (This may  influence some future relationships) Just one vote for each ship, 'aye' or 'nay' will do perfectly:

Stucky (Steve & Bucky)

Clintasha (Clint & Natasha)

Kaloki (Katha & Loki)

Thunderwar (Thor & Sif)

Fosterson (Thor & Jane)

Theyna (Thalia & Reyna)

P.S. Did Kat just pull a Thalia? Is it just me or is that every time Percy is being stupid, it's one of the girls who are like 'no'? And then beat the stupid out of him?
