13: Less And More Serious Talking
Kat stared out the window, deep in thought. Had anyone been around, the resting brooding face would have turned them away. Loki, however, knew her angry face from her thoughtful one. Truth be told, he had only seen her angry once: When the mortal had aimed his weapon at him. It sent butterflies fluttering around in his chest when he thought that, but he swatted them away with a begrudging force.
"Careful there. If you think too much you'll hurt yourself." Loki said, half serious.
Kat looked over at him, not having noticed his approach. She continued chewing on the inside of her lip, and fidgeting with her bracelet absently.
Loki waited for her to figure out what she wanted to say. If she had just gotten caught in some darker thoughts, she would have responded to his jibe. But she hadn't, and she had yet to dismiss him.
"Can you teach me?" She asks softly, after a minute.
"Teach you what?" Loki frowned slightly. He was already teaching her how to use haladies, and they were teaching each other the languages.
"Your magic. Seidr." Kat answered.
"Why? Why would you want me to teach you?" Loki asked incredulously.
"Because. I want to." Kat said, crossing her arms defensively.
"You are a child." Loki rolled his eyes.
"We're the same age, dipshit." Kat replied.
"I am a thousand years older than you."
"Technically. But you age slower. So we're the same age." She countered.
Loki briefly regretted telling her about Asgardian lifespans. But he was impressed she had remembered that. "Fine. But why me?"
"Because." Kat said like it was obvious. And then she elaborated. "You're the only Seidr master I know, and I trust you."
Trust. Loki scoffed internally. He was the God of Lies. "I don't believe you."
Kat saw right through the self-doubt bullshit. "Tell me:" She demanded, walking closer to him with a stern gaze. "Am I lying? Am I lying when I say that I trust you?"
Loki was startled. "No, you are not."
Kat's gaze softened. "Two things, Lokes. One: I don't lie about things like that. Two: You aren't what everyone says you are. You are who you choose to be."
You aren't what everyone says you are. You are who you choose to be. The words resounded in his head.
A lock of hair had fallen out of the half-up-bun at the back of his head, and Kat absently reached up and tucked it behind his ear. When she realized what she had done, she felt her cheeks warm. Loki quickly caught on to the glow.
She pat his shoulder. "I gotta go see Dad about the plans for the party conference thing." She left the room quickly, and for once, Loki let the warmth of her touch linger.
~~~~~~
Tony was anxious. And a bit giddy. And excited. But he was Tony Stark, and no-one besides his immediate family and friends would have been able to tell that he wasn't as cocky and confident as he portrayed himself.
Tony adjusted his dark navy blue suit, smoothing out imaginary wrinkles. An assistant poked her head into the room Tony was waiting in. "It's time, Mr. Stark. They're ready for you." She informed him. He followed her out, setting his shoulders and bringing up his signature smirk.
A moment later the press room doors were swinging open, and Tony sauntered in, casually waving to the reporters and cameras. He made his way to where a table had been set up. He stood behind the middle seat, and picked up a mic.
"I'm going to go ahead and assume you all know who I am by this point." Tony said into the mic casually. He got a few chuckles and eye rolls. "Social media was coming up with all kinds of theories on what I was going to say today." Tony added lightly.
Cue more soft chuckles. Tony continued speaking, because that's what he does at these conferences. "I hope you bet carefully." He smirked, and a few more chuckles.
Tony then let the smirk fall into a more serious expression, and the reporters got the hint. "Recently, It came to my attention that I don't know everything about myself." This earned him interested reporters. "Now, I have two very special people to introduce to you." Tony turned expectantly to the doors.
They opened, and two figures dressed in matching blue suits walked in. Immediately, everyone could tell they were at the very least siblings, if not twins. The two continued walking to Tony with light smiles on their faces, and stood on either side of him.
"This is Perseus," Tony said with a gesture to Percy, and then turned to Kat. "And this is Katha,"
The next word brought chaos into the room. "Stark."
Eventually the three got seated. Everyone had a question. Percy and Kat were so very not used to these kinds of things. They had gone over the false backstory, and told it together.
Kat leaned back in her seat while Tony and Percy were answering a question, and signed to an assistant for more water.
That caught someone's eye as all three were brought secondary water bottles. "Do you know ASL?" He asked.
"I wouldn't say I know it, but I'm learning." Katha replied.
"Do either of you know any other languages?"
"Well, a few..." Percy said, and scratched his neck.
"Really? Which ones?"
"Uh, Latin." Percy said. Perhaps saying 'ancient Greek' would be a bad thing.
"A few other bits of things as well. Next question?" Kat added, changing the topic.
For the twins, it felt like the conference was never going to end. Tony thought it was going smoothly. For the reporters, it was a feast.
Sometime into the conference, Kat had taken off her suit jacket. She was used to tank tops and light wear. The white blouse she wore underneath was short sleeved with a low neckline. This allowed clear sight to her tattoo, which was addressed briefly.
Kat was trying to imitate Loki's laid back indifference, and Kat hoped it was helping her look like she was calm and not wanting to leave immediately. Percy wasn't as relaxed, but he seemed to be channeling something as well. It could possibly be an inner Hades; said god usually draped himself over his throne. Or it could be his own inner Stark.
"Perseus, could you tell us how you got that scar?" A reporter asked.
{"The one on your jaw!"} Kat whispered across the table quickly in Greek. The mics didn't pick it up.
Percy shrugged. "Some fights aren't avoidable."
"Do you mean you get into a lot of trouble?"
Percy grinned his signature troublemaker smirk. "Trouble loves me."
"And what about you, Miss Stark?" They had taken to calling her that after the first failure to say 'Katha'. "I don't notice any significant scars on your person."
Kat smirked. "Maybe they just haven't gotten to me yet."
"Are you saying that you also get into trouble?"
"Well, someone's gotta watch his back." She replied. It was the truth, and yet nowhere near.
And on it went.
~~~~~~
Annabeth and Pepper were already waiting for them when they finally managed to escape the hyenas. Tony wrapped an arm around Pepper's waist and kissed her cheek. Percy buried his face into Annabeth's shoulder.
For a moment, Kat felt alone. And then she felt a familiar hum of magic beside her. Her weary face gained a soft smile.
"Okay, I'm heading up." Kat dismissed herself, and took to the private elevator. The hum of magic stayed by her shoulder the entire way back to their floor.
Once Kat was back on the floor of the tower that was home, she allowed a grin to fill her face, and slipped into her room. Well, it was kind of her room. But she didn't sleep, so she didn't need a bed. Loki, however, did. So they shared the space, which had taken some bargaining with Tony.
It made it simultaneously harder and easier to prank each other.
Once Kat knew the hum had followed her in, she closed the door, and hugged the air. Loki's invisibility spell dissipated.
Kat released him. "Thanks."
"For what?" Loki said innocently.
"I know you're aware of when I start to freak out. I can feel your magic, Lokes. Which means I also know when you put more into your spell in my head." Kat said.
Loki hadn't realized that she knew.
"So thanks for helping in the conference. And for waiting outside." Kat said.
He wasn't supposed to leave this floor. However, there wasn't anything prohibiting his magic. Besides, he hadn't even bothered anyone.
Loki regained his footing. "Well, we can't lose our Ylva now, can we?"
Kat narrowed her eyes. "You've called me that a few times. What's it mean?"
"She-wolf." Loki answered.
She raised an eyebrow. "Is that an appraisal or is it derogatory?"
"It's an appraisal." Loki replied.
That seemed to please Kat, and she went over to her closet section to change her clothes.
"How did you know what 'derogatory' means?" Loki inquired.
"Auntie Tasha." Kat said, and walked into the bathroom with her bundle. She poked her head out of the doorway, eyes narrowed. "Did you just insult my intelligence?"
"Perhaps." Loki replied.
"Jerk." Kat commented, walking further into the bathroom where Loki wouldn't see her, but they could continue talking. "And to think I was going to get us some donuts."
Loki raised an eyebrow that she couldn't see. She was baiting him, but his curiosity won him over for the moment. "And what would those be?"
"Delicious pastries."
She knew his penchant for sweets. "What kind?"
"I'm pretty sure Asgard has nothing like them."
She heard Loki sigh. "What do you want?"
"Admit I'm smart, just not in the way that everybody thinks of as 'smart'."
A long pause. "Yes, Ylva, you are smart, though sometimes you make me doubt it."
Close enough, Kat thought as she pulled her on shirt, walking out of the bathroom. "You ready to go? We'll have to be quick, I've got maybe an hour before people'll know my face. Maybe."
"Where are we going?" Loki asked.
"To the donut shop." Kat grinned.
Dragging Loki along was a great idea, especially when she got to see his face light up at all the different types. She had to describe some of the differences to him, but eventually gave up. When they returned to the tower with 48 donuts of varying types, Kat was almost laughing at the slightly childish grin Loki wore.
When they reappeared in the tower, each holding half of the boxes, Kat immediately called out. "Dad, Percy! I'm back!" She had told JARVIS she was leaving just a moment before they had left.
"Kat?" She heard both Tony and Percy reply.
Kat walked over to the living room, Loki trailing behind. "Hey."
"Where have you bee- Are those donuts?" Tony voice drastically changed from protective to confused.
"Donuts!" Percy cheered, and jumped up from the couch, helping the pair situate the boxes on the coffee table.
"Why did you get so many?" Pepper asked.
"We have three gods in company." Kat said.
"You're not off the hook." Tony grumped as he took a donut.
Kat ignored Tony for the moment, because Loki had picked one up. She laughed as she watched his expression change. He continued to eat the pastry. Satisfied with his reaction, she took one herself and sat down, patting the cushion beside her so that Loki wouldn't forget to sit.
"You decided to leave without telling anybody?" Tony asked.
"I told JARVIS." Kat pointed out.
"That's-" Tony said, and groaned. "Are you even okay to be out there?"
Kat stiffened. "Well, there was only one way to find out."
"That was dangerous." Tony said.
"I'll be fine."
Tony didn't particularly hear that. "And Reindeer Games here left the tower! He's supposed to be on lockdown!"
"He was with me the entire time." Kat said. Loki listened as he ate his donut.
"That doesn't make it any better!" Tony said.
"Why is it so bad for him to be out, huh? He's innocent!"
"How can you know that for sure?"
"I trust him." Kat said firmly.
"He is the actual god of lies!" Tony exclaimed.
"That doesn't mean he's a liar!"
"How can you know?" Tony demanded. Kat froze for a second. "See, even you don't know-"
"He's in my domain." The words were spoken evenly, surely, with no possibility of rebuke. All eyes snapped to the two who had spoken in unison.
"What?" Tony said.
"Domains are part of the godly influence." Annabeth explained. "It's part of their powers. Like Apollo would recognize a healer, Hermes a traveler, Poseidon a sailor, Zeus a pilot."
"So what are your domains?" Pepper asked curiously.
"Goddess of the between." Kat said.
"God of heroes and guardians." Percy said.
Kat gave Tony a hard look. "Does that clear things up for you? Next time put a little more faith in me."
"Before we tear each other's throats out, can we please talk about something extremely important?" Annabeth pitched in before arguing could resume.
"What important thing?" Kat wondered.
"The prophecy." Annabeth replied darkly.
"I thought the Giant War was over?" Loki inquired.
"It is. A new prophecy has been issued." Annabeth said.
"What?" Both Kat and Percy blurted.
Annabeth gave Percy a light glare. "You would know this if you ever came to camp." As Percy gained a guilty look, Annabeth turned to the group. "We've managed to keep knowledge of it contained, at least until we can try to understand what it's about."
"So what does it say?" Kat asked with a hardened expression.
"'The future reveals of a god reborn, The falsely accused is not to scorn;
A mad foe schemes of a dark crusade, Vacant heart when the price is paid;
The Fates entwine as our worlds align, All prepare for a new design;
For if all are to stand alone, Carve upon the resting stone;
Far beyond the gift of dreams, The end is not where it seems.'"
The room was quiet as they thought. Kat turned to Loki, hoping to bounce ideas back and forth, but she grew worried as he had gone pale. She took his hand silently, and rubbed circles into it.
Percy was internally berating himself. Pepper looked a bit lost. Tony was silently pulling up tech for them to record their ideas.
Annabeth pulled them out of their silence. "We've got a few ideas, if you want to hear them."
"Yeah, shoot."
"The first line 'The future reveals of a god reborn'. We think it refers to Katha. Well, Percy getting his soul split." Annabeth shares. After nods, she continues. "The second, 'The falsely accused is not to scorn', I think it means Loki."
"The third and fourth lines don't tell us enough-"
"They tell plenty." Loki said gravely.
Eyes turned to him. "What do you mean?"
"'A mad foe schemes of a dark crusade'. It's so plain..." Loki trailed off. Kat squeezed his hand. Loki blinked. "It's the Mad Titan." He fell into silence.
"Who's the Mad Titan?" Tony asked.
Loki didn't respond. He was staring unfocused into empty space.
"We don't know what the fifth and sixth lines mean, but seven and eight... They're a warning." Annabeth said.
"I don't like it." Kat scowled.
"It's fucking creepy." Tony said.
Pepper was silent.
"'Far beyond the gift of dreams' is referring to my visions, right?" Percy said.
Annabeth nodded. "And 'The end is not where it seems' sounds an awful lot like this won't have a clean-cut ending."
