Those Were

That night was pure torture. First, before I went to bed, there was beautiful piano music. I recognized the song. Which made it worse. It was a song he had tried to teach me.

I would try it, and he'd just die laughing. He was patient, but if I was honest, I couldn't care less about the song. I just wanted to be with him.

Then we'd end up messing around. We'd get into weird moods and we couldn't stop laughing. Those were the best times.

We were so in love, we didn't care about what anybody else thought or said. Sure, we were young, but nobody understood.

Then, after the music stopped, I was awake in agony.

Thoughts and memories came flooding in. Why did he have to ruin what was so perfect?

Eventually, I fell asleep. But sleep did me no good. I had awful dreams that woke me up every few hours.

I finally woke up in the morning. I was glad that night was over. Now, I just had the day to get through.

I looked around and groaned in frustration when I realized my clothes were all in my suitcases that got left in my car. All I was wearing was a long t shirt.

Just my luck. I reluctantly decided to go. I snuck down the stairs and outside. I rejoiced when I made it to my car unseen.

I grabbed my luggage and hurried back up. I was just about in the clear when the door next to mine opened.

And of course, it happened to be him. He glanced at me then looked down.

"Is that my shirt?" He asked, clearly amused.

I frowned and covered myself.

"What do you want?"I asked.

"Oh, nothing. It's just kinda hard to sleep with someone bouncing around this early in the morning", he said, crossing his arms.

Man, his morning voice was sexy.

"Well, I'm sorry your highness. But It's not my fault my clothes were left outside."

"Then who's is it? Your boyfriends?" He asked.

I rolled my eyes. "Why am I talking to you?"

He chuckled. "And you haven't changed a bit".

"And you haven't changed a bit" I said, mocking him like a kid. I walked to my door and fumbled with my keys.

"Wow. Very mature", he said.

"You are sooooo one to talk", I said.

"Where are you going today?" He asked as I groaned in frustration with my door.

"Oh my gosh! Why are you so nosy? I'm going out to get breakfast! Happy?"

He smiled. "What? Why don't you have breakfast with me. I insist."

I looked at him. "Well, I don't care. Breakfast with you is the last thing I'd do."

"No. Probably getting into that apartment is", he said, smiling at me struggling with the key.

I ignored his comments and kept trying.

Eventually, I heard his footsteps coming close.

"Here. it might be easier to unlock if the key isn't upside down", he said. His hands touched mine and I pulled away immediately.

"Don't touch me!" I snapped.

He smiled, while turning the key over. "Relax, darling. I'm just trying to help."

I heard it click.

"Thanks, but I don't need your help. I'm a big girl."

"Are you really?"

I rolled my eyes and swung open the door.

"Need help carrying these?", he asked.

"No. I'm fine", I said, annoyed.

He leaned against the wall. "You won't give me an inch, will you?"

I didn't look at him. I just grabbed my bags and walked in.

I slammed the door and locked it.

"Locking it might not be a good idea. You might need to call me over to unlock it again" he said through the door.

I ignored him and went through my bags. I picked out an outfit and got dressed.

I grabbed my phone and my purse and walked out the door.

I walked fast past his door. I still couldn't believe I was stuck next to him.

I ran to my car and drove away.

Charlie's pov

She was still just as beautiful as the day she left, and even more.

I know she pretended to hate me, but I think somewhere under all that armor, she still cared about me.

Maybe she didn't even know it yet.

I was as surprised as her when I saw she was my next door neighbor. But I couldn't help but be a little happier.

Sure, we were done. That was obvious. But it's not so wrong to have a little fun, is it?

Joanna's pov

I got back late that night. I ended up buying a lot more then I meant to. It took multiple trips to get it all out.

I dumped my last load down and sighed with relief. The pains of being upstairs.

I stuffed as many groceries as I could into my crappy tiny fridge.

Then I set everything else up.

I sat down on my mattress that was still on the floor. I turned on the lamp on the floor beside me.

I folded my legs and tied my hair up. The next day, I needed to go job hunting.

I opened the newspaper and looked around. There were only jobs that either paid next to nothing or required extra schooling.

I kind of knew this was hopeless. I would just have to wait a while before I might find a steady job. Until then, I might have to settle for a crap job.

After scanning the newspaper again, I sighed and turned out my lights. Just as I felt my eyelids beginning to droop, there was a knock on the door.

I groaned and sleepily mad my way to the door.

I opened it. Even though I knew it was going to be him, I was still disappointed.

He held a box out.

"Some... Ummm.... Things you left", he said.

I took the box. "Okay. Thanks", I said, closing the door.

He grabbed the knob. "Can we talk?"

"No", I replied, attempting to shut the door.

But he held it. "Why won't you even talk to me?"

"What? I don't know what you're talking about", I said, still struggling to shut the door.

"Joanna, talk to me", he said more sternly.

"No", I replied.

"Why?" He asked.

"Stop. There's no reason. I'm just tired".

"Stop lying", he said.

"I'm not lying. Go away", I said, getting angry.

We were both still attempting to handle the door, me with my whole body, him with one hand.

"Joanna! I'm done with this stupid little game!" He said, clearly annoyed.

"What stupid little game? I'm fine!" I said, starting to slip.

Finally he shove the door open, knocking me to the ground.

"Joanna. Tell me", he commanded.

I struggled not to cry. "Nothing. I said I'm fine".

I still sat on the floor, holding my knees. He came and kneeled down before me.

"Joanna, you're not going to win this fight. We're neighbors now. You're gonna have to learn to get used to me. I'm not leaving until I get what I want."

I glared up at him.

I couldn't take it anymore. "You want to know? Want to know why I can't stand your presence? Here's why! You ruined my life! You ruined me! " I got up and tried to run before he could respond.

I was still holding in my tears. I vowed I wouldn't let him see me cry. I would never give him the satisfaction.

I felt his hand around my arm. He turned around and shut the door.

"What did I do?" He asked.

I stared at him in disbelief before I started laughing out loud. He looked utterly confused.

"What did you do? What... Oh!", I clasped my hands together and spoke in a soft voice,"Well, lets start with bullet point number one. Hmm, that would be the time when you treated me like dirt!"

"Joanna, you were never a toy to me. I did care about you. But not like you thought. We were young and stupid. We didn't know what we were doing."

"You know something? Not a single day goes by where I regret anything. I wouldn't take back what we did. Actually, I'd play it over again. Then I could see what you looked like when you had a heart!" I yelled.

He grabbed my wrist. "Joanna! Wake up! We weren't in love! We never were. We never even knew what that word meant, and we might never. We were just kids."

"You told me you loved me over and over and over again", I said quietly, trying not to cry," Was every word you said a lie?"

He looked me in the eyes. His eyes had no glimmer.

"Maybe they were. Maybe it was all a lie".

I stared at him in horror. He wasn't even the same man anymore.

I couldn't take it. "Get out! Now! I'm done! I'm done letting you ruin my life!"

He stood by the door. "Oh yeah? And how are you going to do that? We live 8 feet apart".

I smiled in satisfaction. "I'm leaving".
